Free Music Notes for The Dead 60s

Free Music Review: Worth the Discovery!
Hit: 5 Stars

I saw them when they opened for Garbage on 04/24/05 in Montreal at the Metropolis. My partner and I weren't aware of this band until seeing them at that show, so I didn't know what else to expect from them. My first impression of them was "god...it's so boring & bland! Get them off the stage!" They did about 5 or 6 songs, but I only paid attention to one (You're Not The Law). I was sold as soon as that song began erupting all over the audience with it's very own, original sound. Sometimes all it takes is 1 song for a person to appreciate all the songs.

By coincidence, "TD60's" do sound like "The Clash". Doesn't bother me, because I grew up in the same era as "The Clash". My music collection doesn't consist of anything "Ska" until now. Unfortunately, the songs are so short. Sitting here writing this...I realized the first 3 tracks were shorter than 6 minutes if you put them all together in one simultaneous block. But they're great songs and I'd rather have all their music than to download & keep only the songs I like. I don't own an IPOD, but I do own 3 SONY Mini-Disc players...so eventually I'll get around to putting the music into MP3 format with I-Tunes.

The booklet & back insert is printed in bright, glossy "Phonebook Yellow" ink with adverts printed in black to contrast with the vivid monotone background. The adverts feature really retro photos, which do all the talking. To some, it may be too gimmickry, but i don't mind it because it's amusing & beats the hell out of a s**tload of boring text. Along with the catchy photos, you'll see the song titles merged into some of the slogans. It's fun if you ask me!

All songs are great, but my fave is "You're Not the Law". It's catchy & fun with that squealing organ whining in the background. The keyboardist is pretty good, and seemed to have no bones in his fingers as he played during their opening gig here in Montreal. I recommend this CD to anyone, despite the "Copy protected" warning.

The Dead 60s Poster

The 1960s may be dead for this Liverpool quartet, but the 1980s are alive and well. The opening track sets the scene: For the first few seconds, you'd swear it was Gang of Four--by way of Franz Ferdinand--with that angular, yet bouncy guitar attack, but then the vocals come in. Could it be Joe Strummer, Joe Jackson...Ted Leo? No matter, "Riot Radio" is a great post-post-punk track any way you look at it (that's Matt McManamon on the mic, by the way). Up there with, yes, "Take Me Out," "Apply Some Pressure" (Maximo Park), and "I Predict a Riot" (Kaiser Chiefs). On the rest of their debut, the Dead 60s distinguish themselves from the current UK guitar-rock crop with shorter songs and more ska, dub, and "Rock the Casbah"-style dance beats, which means they would fit just as comfortably on a bill with Bloc Party as The Rapture. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
