Free Music Review: Surprisingly Good!

After a 14 year "hiatus" Death Angel returned with 2004's 'The Art Of Dying". An album that was filled with light, highly polished unfocused material throught out the album. Truly a let down in every aspect. If it took them this long to produce something this horrid I had no hope left at all for these old school thrashers. Fast foward to 2008 and after a couple of years of touring the band has tightend up it's sound. To be truthful I was hesistant about this release. With tracks titled 'When Worlds Collide','Soulless', 'Buried Alive' and the title of the album being "Killing Season' you would think the songs would be just as unoriginal as their titles. This conclusion is incorrect. In fact 'Killing Season' is a solid consistent album from start to finish.
The first thing the listener will notice is the raw sound of the album. Actually this is the opposite of what is heard on 'TAOD' This time around the band feels like they know what they want and just needed the right producer (Nick Raskulinecz) to get there. It just seems like they just wanted to rock out on this one. Thrash guitar amid breakdowns that lead to a few acoustic passages which in turn offer a wide variety on the album without sounding redundent. But the one thing that truly shines on 'Killing Season' is Mark Oseguda vocals. With just the right amount of high end with a raspy delivery Mark sounds the best he ever has.....period. A crowning acheivement for him along with Rob Cavestany busting out the leads.
So is 'Killing Season' a thrash-back to the days when bands like Testament,Forbidden and Nuclear Assault were tearing up the underground scene......no...not exactly. But "Killing Season' is a step in that direction.
