Free Music Notes for The Forbidden Love EPFree Music Review: Visual, Visceral, Cinematic Songs Hit: 4 Stars
Much like their following full length Photo Album, Forbidden Love is five cinematic snapshots of things slightly unrequited. "Deadcab for what?" was my reaction when the owner of a local indy record store first brought this EP into the coffeeshop where i worked in 2000, which seems like a hopelessly naive reaction after a half-decade when Ben Gibbard and company have proven themselves to be one of the most solid groups of songwriters in modern rock.
The lyrics of "Photobooth" tumble out over a tinny drum loop like a series of those tiny square photos from a tiny curtained room. Each line conjures a picture of skinny-dipping or living out on the lawn as a friendship veers into summer love and then just as quickly veers out, leaving just that strip of pictures to document the moment of shared longing.
"405" could be about the same relationship, but rather than focusing on an artifact it peers across the distance between the two actors, now represented by the distance of a lengthy highway. This acoustic take offers a vastly different mood than the electric album version - the bouncy guitar picking and Ben's delicate delivery is immediately reminiscent of Elliott Smith.
It's hard to describe what about each of these five Death Cab For Cutie songs makes them so visually evocative. The songs are exactly like movies - not about a theme or a riff or even a single line of dialogue, but about the the story they allow you to voyeuristically live in for a brief four minutes. It's something about a focus on details like floorboards and wedding cakes, lips and fiber optics, while guitars and keyboards are woven together to form an impenetrable bed of rolling electric noise for reminisced lyrics to glide over.
Free Music Review: More like 4.5; Include one of DCFC's best songs Hit: 4 Stars
The Forbidden Love EP could have been a few throwaways to keep fans busy until the follow-up to We Have The Facts..., but it's not. It includes "Photobooth," one of Death Cab's best songs. "Photobooth" has become a fan favorite, and rightly so; it's a beautiful indie-pop tune with some gorgeous synths and Ben Gibbard's heartfelt lyrics. "Technicolor Girls" is a nice, but inessential, tune, but "Song For Kelly Huckaby," like "Photobooth," is one of Death Cab's strongest songs. "Song For Kelly Huckaby" indicates the direction Death Cab would take for The Photo Album, as it is one of Death Cab's louder tunes. The acoustic version of "405" is very pretty, but the alternate take of "Company Calls Epilogue" takes one of the strongest tunes on We Have The Facts and turns it into what sounds like a lo-fi demo. In other words, it's nothing special. Overall, though, "Photobooth" and "Song For Kelly Huckaby" makes the Forbidden Love EP an essential purchase for any Death Cab fan.
Free Music Review: more like 4.5 Hit: 4 Stars
This in one my favorites of all time. "Photobooth" and "Song for Kelly Huckaby" are possibably the best that DCFC has ever written. "Technicolor Girls" is one of those songs that just has a nostalgic feel to it. Forbidden Love also contains alternate versions of two of the best off of We Have the Facts, and We're Voting Yes, and they are even better than they were originally. "405" is just a beautiful song but acoustic its even more great and "Company Calls Epilogue" is one of my personal favorites from this band. Perfect for anyone who is a fan or wants to see what all the fuss is about. Also perfect for those people who think this band is garbage because they havent really given them a chance. Buy it and fall in love with a compellingly honest band. Benjamin Gibbard is Hemingway reincarnte.
Free Music Review: nice stuff Hit: 4 Stars
this is the first record i hear from DCFC and i was so impressed about it. i havent heard the original "company calls epilogue" but the alternate version that appears on this Ep is just amazing. "Photobooth" starts off with some drum beat and everything starts, great song. Yeah, the worst song in here is "Technicolor girls" which does nothing for me, its just there. Then "Song For Kelly Huckaby" ...i think i heard this song before...but anyways is just great too. And the acoustic version of "405" its so calm and a good opener for "company calls epilogue (alternate)". So don't waste your time and buy this!
Free Music Review: The Place to Start Hit: 4 Stars
For those not yet enamored of Death Cab for Cutie's emo-core charms, The Forbidden Love E.P. is the place to start. The three new songs (of five total) are their best and most accessible yet, and the alternate versions of the two best cuts from We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes are must owns for collectors.
