Free Music Notes for Transatlanticism

Free Music Review: Impeccably impressive!
Hit: 5 Stars

In a world where tuneless crap (I hear they call it rap) constantly floats over the airways of the united states telling us things we never needed to know about paid sex (or murder, stealing, etc.), there is a general confusion about what music will outlast the rest. The only rock that plays on the street is punk, which though it claims to be "alternative," actually most of the band names you hear about are registered trademarks of a major brand (take Green Day for an example, though their music isn't TOO bad -- Time Warner pretty much OWNS them). Anything that doesn't have on of the following criteria is considered sissy music: 1) Excessive unecessary profanity. 2) Subject matter that deals with something just "edgy" enough to work. 3) At least 5 people you know must listen to it. I think it's time to break some new ground in the world of music. Until a few years ago I had totally given up on modern music, exiling myself away to the far reaches of classical music, jazz, and rock from decades past.
And then Death Cab smacked me in the face -- surfing the internet I found their website. Tunes began to pour out of my speakers from their site. Damn, I thought -- what have I been missing? I asked my frinds about the band -- they had no idea. So I downloaded this CD. I was raptured. Immediately I loved the first track, The New Year, for it's optimistic views , as well as regrets. We Looked Like Giants and Tiny Vessels are beautifully dark, both expressing anger in two different ways. The title piece is actually my least favorite: it's just too long, and becomes tedious. Styrofoam plates makes me wonder whether it's autobiographical, because if so, that's quite an accomplishment to get into a song. I like the Sound of Settling because it's light, quick, and fast paced. All in all, a fabulous disk.

Free Music Review: ...worthy of the hype we've all been hearing...
Hit: 5 Stars

Over the past year or so, I heard a lot of people talking about Death Cab for Cutie, and from the people that told me about it, I got the impression it would be one of those crumby indie rock bands that's some sort of fad because it's obscure or of chiefly esoteric appeal. However, that was before I purchased this album. My CD collection consists of mainly classic rock like Led Zep, the Who, Dire Straits and stuff like that, and I've clung to that music because of it's cool lyrics and rockin' riffs and have been skeptical of new music. This CD has totally changed the perspective of this old-school rocker, as it has the musicality and the lyricality (is that a word?). This band can do driving rock, as seen in track 5 "the sound of settling" as well as lyrical 6/8 rock, like in "death of an interior decorator". The whole album is laced with interesting guitar work that keeps me engaged and keeps my ears open for new nuances and things. One of the best parts of this CD is the lyrical content. Ben Gibbard has the ability to take complex situations and emotions (some of which I've felt and been confused by) and boil it all down to a lyrical distillate which is eligant and that scintillates in my mind for hours. One of my favorite tracks is "title and registration" which, on the surface, seems about glove compartments, but is actually a song about lost love and reminiscence. The title track is also another excellent track lyrically, although all of the lyrics on this CD have the potential to reverberate in your mind for hours. Anyway...I could ramble for hours about this CD. I definately recommend it. Although I was once skeptical, I have concluded that DCFC is definately worthy of the hype we've all been hearing, and that this disc is definately worth a look.

Free Music Review: Amazing
Hit: 5 Stars

I wasn't expecting much from Transatlanticism after hearing so much praise for Death Cab's newest 'masterpiece' and can gladly say that, regardless of any expectations, this album would've blown me away anyway.
Despite the inevitable confines of the music genre, Transatlanticism is filled with melancholic ballads, subtlely sardonic reality checks and beautifully offbeat songs. What we have here is a large variation of tracks, all bearing the trademark DCFC sound.
Ben Gibbard's voice is striking with his poetic eloquance and angsty undertones.
The lyrics are like narratives in their own way, stories laced with bittersweet memories and quiet musings.
Accompanied by the brilliance of the music itself, each song is audaciously potent in expressing emotions within the listener.

While I enjoyed the whole album immensely, I definitely would have some favourites.

The New Year - a song that strikes a chord with nostalgia, questioning the real worth of such holidays and the gentle note on transatlantic relationships.

Title and Registration - plays on the concept of the glove compartment, it's hidden treasures and the painful memories they can trigger and evoke in one person.

Tiny Vessels - one of the more unnerving songs off the album. We see a meaningless relationship in a harsher, more bitter light. The lyrics are gritty yet stunning and the grating effect of Gibbard's voice in the chorus is a stroke of genius!

Lack of Colour - a heartbreaking rendition of lost love, a beautiful tangle of words and tender dispondance.

Overall, this had to be one of the most touching, awe-inspiring records in my vast collection. Nobody can take you on such an emotionally exhilirating ride as Death Cab for Cutie.

Free Music Review: I like the bird
Hit: 5 Stars

The title track, "translaticism," was played on piano repeatedly by a guy I know in my dorm at college. The first thought that crept into my mind was, "who is this guy and how does he know so much about my life?" Thinking it was an origional composition, I complimented him on it. But he was only the messanger. The song was by a new album (at that time) from this band death cab for cutie, who I had heard of from time to time but never really checked out.

What what I did, I let curiosity take over me and bought the cd (because I didn't have iTunes at the time and couldn't get it from him). After picking out the song I was looking for on the album while in rotation in my car, I discovered that not only did I get my money's worth for one song, but for, get this, even better songs on the disc.

So what is this album? Who are these guys? I think one review called this cd a "relationship catalog" or something, and persoally, I don't think Gene Shallat (spelling, whatever) could have said it better if he reviewed cds. Now, when relationships get the best of me, I have always gone straight to indie rock for music choice. This cd gives me no reason to quit this ritual. Where else would I go? Good Charlot?(grimmace). I've never heard any of their other cds, but I don't see why this wouldn't be a good place to start with them. It worked for me. It's nothing that is going to start a musical revolution, get indie rock a medi focus, or even get recognition a 50 years from now, but in "transatlanticism," there are pleasing indie rock, or just alternative, tunes that could please the ears of any lovesick listener.
