Free Music Review: A round of applause for Ben.
Hit: 5 Stars

Now, I consider this my first real DCfC album. My buddy burned me a copy of "We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes," but I never really gave it a chance. Well, I went into Sam Goody a couple of weeks ago with 20 bucks and came out with Transatlanticism. This album is great. The first song "The New Year" gets stuck in your head, which isn't a bad thing because its a brilliant song. The song "Title and Registration" has a very cool beat and intelligent lyrics. After "Expo '86" and "Sound of Settling" come my favorite two tracks on the album, "Tiny Vessels" and the title track. Both of these songs are beautiful, and the latter has a sing-along finale that is the perfect ending to a wonderful song. The later half of the album is much slower than the half, but that by no means is a bad thing. "Passenger Seat" is a piano driven song that I really enjoy listening to late at night. The rest of the album is great, but I don't feel like going through an explaination of it all. Bottom line, this is definetly one of my top 5 releases of 2003. Pick it up.

Free Music Review: Transatlanticism
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought `Transatlanticism' on the strength of the title track alone and was left amazed at how good the rest of the album was. Whilst the song `Transatlanticism' has a wonderful down beat, almost melancholy, feel to it, the whole album feels a lot more upbeat and positive and it is this aspect that gives the song `Transatlanticism' more impact juxtaposed next to other tracks on offer. This is one of those rare albums with great tracks the whole way through and the second half is as strong as the first. In fact one of may favourite tracks `We Looked Like Giants' comes just before the end. As others have noted, the lyrics are poetic and have great depth and sit perfectly amidst the top quality music writing on offer and the overall package sits very well together. I will be tracking down more of this bands albums in the near future and it's safe to say that after you hear this album you will be doing the very same thing. Superb song-writing and an excellent album, well worth considering.

Free Music Review: A Very Good Album
Hit: 5 Stars

It's true: Transatlanticism is not The Photo Album, and it's not We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes, and it's not Something About Airplanes...And it's definitely not Diary, or Keep it Like a Secret...And I'm glad, and you should be, too. If they have done nothing else, Death Cab for Cutie has constantly avoided making the same album over and over. This gives them a chance to do interesting things, such as: develop new sounds and techniques, not bore us, not suck. Yes, Transatlanticism has a different "sound" than their earlier albums. It is more acoustic and pared down, a little more produced, a little poppier. It is an album that, on first listen, seems simple, almost trivial...And then, weeks later, you find yourself listening to it, frequently. My advice: if you're looking for Sunny Day Real Estate, buy a Sunny Day Real Estate CD. If you're looking for Death Cab, buy Transatlanticism. And if you are of that sad, dogmatic group of people that can only hear in the 'lo-fi,' unknown zone, then you'll never get it, and you're missing out.

Free Music Review: Beautiful!
Hit: 5 Stars

Transatlantacism is that pivital album where DCFC makes their first mark on mainstream society. Even before The O.C., ever since the song "Transatlantacism" appeared on a Six Feet Under episode, their popularity seemed to explode!

But aside from all that hype and popularity, Transatlantacism is also pivital in the sense that the music of DCFC has started to mature, branch out and become even more musical and better produced. Their older material is really great too, but you can really begin to hear a major improvement and a shift in direction with Transatlantacism. And like I've mentioned in my review for Plans, the lyrics are uncommon and make you think in ways that common lyrics don't.

If you're new to DCFC and like the songs you've heard from The OC, and whatever else DCFC is featured on...you'll sure to enjoy Transatlantacism just as much!

I highly recommend this album! And listen to it a couple or three times and let it grow on you if you don't like it immdiately. There's some really great music here!

Free Music Review: Fresh sounding melancholy
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD was playing at local record shop that also buys and sells used CD's,and I was cleaning out the few CD's I bought before clunkerizing my buying methods....meaning everything I buy is previewed before buying.

I had sold enough to buy one CD (not much used value)and the more I listened to the CD I had to inquire as to what it was they had playing. "Repeat that name again please" something something cutie...ah well...not to worry, it is the music that counts.

A more subdued version of Cold Play? I thought so, was the closest sound I could compare it to.

Soft, yet meaningful vocals, who would think you could get insights comparing life to a glove compartment?

Haunting, subtle, emotional, engaging vocals kept me intrigued, and like Ryan Adams "Gold" I would have to agree, the more I play it the more I like it. And when so much music today is carbon copy drool, this is a nice piece of fresh air play.

SO, though your toes might not tap too much, your heart might dance.
