Free Music Notes for High & DryFree Music Review: Raw and Powerful Hit: 5 Stars
High and Dry captures the true essence and one of a kind sound of Def Leppard...just on the edge of superstardom !! The songs are a little less radio friendly (a good thing), a little longer, a little harder....the sound of a great band hungry to make it !! This album really showcases the raw power of Steve Clark's Les Paul...the lonesome, minor power chords that he made famous and nobody was really able to copy !! The songs on this one play like a great set in a large smokey bar venue...less glitz....more hard honest rock transitioning into what was to become Heavy Metal......not the stadium crapola that came later !! The songs on this album stand the test of time and while you won't hear many of them played today...or see them on a greatest hits album....these were the tunes that really make Def Leppard a great band !! Lady Strange (a glimpse of things to come...the muting of the guitar followed by clean, hard power chords), Hit and Run (a great showcase of the power of Joe Elliot), Bringing on the Heartbreak (feel that classic bending and sad sound created by the haunting master Steve Clark), and my favorite....Mirror, Mirror (you can hear shades of Pyromania in this song....the sound is strong, soulful and powerful...nobody does it like this !!!) This is a great album and a must for Heavy Metal fans !! This one is the dark horse among Def Leppard's albums and was overshadowed by their later works...but this is the real deal....the real drums, the real stripped down guitars, the hungry vocals !! 5 stars all the way !!
Free Music Review: Just about the BEST Leppard LP of all-time... Hit: 5 Stars
This was my introduction to Def Leppard...yep waaaay back in '81 my friend who used to take me to work played this cassette over and over and after a few listens, I became curious as to WHO it was we were listening TO. He wasn't sure himself, and suddenly pressed eject and gave me the tape and said, 'Here, YOU keep it!' That was one of the best gifts I have ever received. To THIS day 'High 'N Dry' remains my favorite of all of Def Leppard's many great albums. Saw them in concert a few months back and pulled a few strings and got a backstage pass. As I chatted with a couple of the bandmates, I got the distinct feeling that this was THEIR personal favorite album, too (but I am not 100% certain). The song that ALWAYS does it for me is "Mirror Mirror". If you haven't heard this song, you will forever wonder why it wasn't a HUGE chart-hit. To my knowledge, only "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" and "Let It Go" were ever released as radio singles (I work in radio--I checked) but TRUST me, there are at LEAST 6 songs on this album that are every bit as good as any singles from 'Pyromania' OR 'Hysteria'. Not just good, but if count yourself a Leppard fan, your collection is FAR from complete UNTIL you get 'HIGH 'N DRY'. Simply put a 1st rate CD by one of hard rocks greatest quartets--before fame began to take its toll. Also, its interesting to note that this album was recorded when the oldest member was 23, the youngest was 17, which makes 'High 'N Dry' even MORE impressive.
Free Music Review: Don't want to sound like the Kool-Aid Man, but "oh yeahhhh!" Hit: 5 Stars
To sum it up in a nutshell, this album needs to be in your collection because...IT KICKS SOME SERIOUS GLUTEUS MAXIMUS! Songs like "Let it Go", "High 'N' Dry (Saturday Night)", "Bringin' on the Heartbreak", "Switch 625", "Lady Strange" and "Another Hit and Run" are written VERY well and still stand out as some of their best material - I think it is a serious felony that out of the aforementioned titles, only "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" was chosen on their greatest hits compilation! Also, Def Leppard pretty much steers clear of this album when performing live which is unfortunate for the fans! Joe Elliott gave a very stupid explanation on "VH1 Storytellers" saying that "High 'N' Dry/On through the Night" are like the rocket parts that get you up in the air and then break off because you don't need them anymore (his EXACT words) - he also went on to basically say (yes, it gets even more stupid...) that out of a large audience, most people wouldn't know the songs anyway or want to hear them...I say SO WHAT Mr. Joe Elliott and that is not something you should assume for "your fans" - if you've got great old songs, you shouldn't just throw them in the garbage just because your too concerned in trying to appeal to all the "legions" of "new Def Lep fans" - anyway, I am off my soap box on that issue - JUST TRUST ME AND GET THIS ALBUM!
Free Music Review: The first of their trio of great albums Hit: 5 Stars
Def Leppard released their second album High 'N' Dry in 1981. Under the wing of producer Mutt Lange, who was riding high with the success of albums with AC/DC and Foreigner, the band sharpened their songwriting skills while maintaining their metallic crunch. As a result, the band would earn their first minor hit single here with "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" and would build tons of momentum toward their worldwide breaktrough with their next album Pyromania.
All of the tracks here are very good and are harder and heavier overall than those on Pyromania. Joe Elliott's voice was still pretty rough, sounding similar to AC/DC's Brian Johnson, but still fit in well with the band's compositions. Tracks such as "Let It Go", "Another Hit and Run", and the title track are great songs with killer riffs mixed with strong melodies and memorable choruses. Other tracks such as "You Got Me Runnin'" and "Lady Strange" are very catchy and point toward the direction they'd pursue on Pyromania and Hysteria. "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" is an awesome power ballad, one that retains its emotion without becoming sappy, and leads into the killer instrumental "Switch 525." Other strong tracks include the moody "Mirror Mirror (Look Into My Eyes)" and the fury of "On Through The Night" and "No No No." All told, a great heavy metal album what would point their way toward superstar status. Highly recommended.
Free Music Review: The Boys at their Greatest! Hit: 5 Stars
Simply an incredible album, (it was only their second!) that shows how great the guys from that band were when they really put their heart into the music and when it shwos clearly that they had fun doing music and when they were abble to give you through their music the excitement they had during that time to you when you listen to the record. It's raw great guitar from Pete Willis and Steve Clark and cool lyrics. It's as good as Pyromania and in my mind maybe even better. Forget about the Def Leppard of the 90's and all that, This album shows you the talent of Steve Clark and the effect he had on the otehr members of the band. You have to tell the things like they are , When the guy died the music of Def Leppard very much died with him. There is not one average song on that album, all great songs with the highlights being Switch625, Saturday Night, Let It Go and especially the stunning Lady Strange. If you want to hear music at its best and that band at its best buy this album along with the other 2 being On Through the Night(80) and pryomania(83) and you will have probably their 3 best songs : Photograph Lady Strange and Wasted. Too bad that version don't have Me And My wine. Buy it and hear Def Leppard at their prime!
