When I was a teen, "Pyromania" was one of my favorite albums. Actually, I still think it remains the Leppards' best work. But for four years, I anxiously awaited the release of the follow-up to "Pyromania," which ended up being released in August 1987. The delays are well-documented in the liner notes of "Hysteria" as to what the band was striving for. This reissue discusses how much pressure the band felt in following-up the septuple platinum "Pyromania."
In the U.S., there was a great metal radio station called Z-Rock, which played about 3/4 of what was released on "Hysteria." So I had heard a good chunk of the album before its official release. "Hysteria" is as musically different from "Pyromania" as "Pyromania" is from "High N' Dry." But "Hysteria" is the kind of record that grows on you with each repeated listen. I really liked the textured guitar layers to "Women," the looping beat of "Rocket," the raunch of "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and the great harmonies of the title track and "Animal." I like the heavy production of "Gods of War" and "Rocket," which remind me of updated versions of one of my favorite Leppard numbers: "Die Hard the Hunter."
Over 20 years after its release, "Hysteria" is still a very classic album. I was never a fan of "Love Bites" or "Armageddon It," but I like the rest of the material. What is cool about this re-release is that it contains the original liner notes plus some great history about the recording of the record as told by the band.
I also like the idea that the band issued their original B-side singles in this set. I have the old 45" of "Tear It Down" which is far superior to the version that ended up on "Adrenalize." I am glad to have a cd quality version of the song. I also really love the live "Rock of Ages" medley that includes homage to some great songs like "Whole Lotta Love" and "My Generation."
My lone complaint about this set is that I wished it contained a live version of the acoustic "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" version that the band played during the "Hysteria" tour. The song began slowly, the crowd sang back the chorus, and it took off. I would rather have had that included than an extended studio version of the "Excitable."

Universal. 2005.Probably Def Leppard's best album, and certainly their most successful, Hysteria pretty much sums up 80s hard rock: catchy, tuneful, and fun. It's also one of the few albums from the period that doesn't sound dated now, and singles like "Pour Some Sugar On Me", "Armageddon It", and "Rocket" remain staples of rock radio. The rest of the album is equally entertaining; "Animal" and "Hysteria", while mid-tempo, have the same slick intensity, and "Love Bites" is one of the few pop-metal ballads that doesn't sound saccharine over a decade after its release. Def Leppard may be remembered more for their hair than their music these days, but that's more due to changing tastes than anything else. It's still good. --Genevieve Williams
