Free Music Notes for HysteriaFree Music Review: A Pure Struggle From One of the Greatest Bands and Drummer of All- Time Hit: 5 Stars
Def Leppard's 1983 album Pyromania sent Def Leppard on the road to much success in the United States but not so much success in the U.K. However, it would take the band almost 4 1/2 years to get back on their feet after being struck with such a disaster that would bring any band to their knees. Rick Allen on New Year's Eve was caught in an automobile accident that completely totaled his 1984 Chevy Corvette Sting Ray and sent him flying through the windshield as it completely severed his left arm. Now, before I get into the rest of this accident, Rick Allen joined Def Leppard when he was only 15 in 1978 and before the accident was a very accomplished, skilled, and determined drummer with no fear in his eyes. However, after losing his left arm after doctors tried to reattached it but it got infected and had to be removed for good, he either had to leave the band or find a way to suck it up with no idea of how to continue. And thats what he did and he did it even better than ever before as lead singer Joe Elliot would say that Rick is a better drummer now then he ever was before. In my eyes Rick Allen is THE greatest drummer in the world! You can take Neil Peart, John Bonham, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Alex Van Halen, and who ever else and they dont compare in my eyes to the one- armed bandit of Rick Allen. I mean how many drummers do you know can lose their arm and come back to be a better then they were before. Just hearing from that concert video when Rick Allen returned as Joe Elliot said 'I want to you to meet my mate Rick Allen' and the crowd went absolutely nuts. As the crowd was cheering on louder and louder Rick Allen just sat behind his custom made drum set bursting in tears. Rick Allen's recovery was a brutal year long struggle that left him with five fingers, ten toes, and the passion and determination to move on from one of the most disasterous events in any drummer's life as Rick found his place in my book as being the greatest drummer in the world.
P.S: Do I have to get into the songs? (There all GREAT minus Dont Shoot Shotgun and Excitable.)
Def Leppard kicks major @$$!!!
Free Music Review: Leppard's finest? Not quite. But still pretty damn fine. Hit: 5 Stars
Hysteria contained seven charting singles plus a defacto 8th hit in the B-side Tear it Down (fueled by their performance of it at the MTV music awards), amazing by any feat, putting Lep in category with only a handful of other artists. (Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Janet Jackson). The remaining 5 tracks on the album are all very good, with the exception of 'Excitable', the one weak link in the Hysteria machine. Any of the other remaining songs (Gods of War, Love and Affection, Don't Shoot Shotgun, Run Riot) could have easily been yet another chart climber during the 4 years that spanned Hysteria and their next release. So with all this consistency, why do I not rate Hysteria the best of Leppard's Best? For one thing, the songs, while all great, seem to have lost their 'bite' that Pyromania (The Best) had. This is due in part to Steve Clark's drinking problem, which hurt his guitar playing on the album so much Phil Collen had to take lead for a good 75% of the material. It's also due in part to Rick Allen's mech-drum kit, which made every song go at a slower tempo than it could have been. Give the man props for drumming with one arm, but it really could have been a little faster. The only real fast-tempo rocker on the album is Run Riot, and even that seems a little too 'pop'. Def Leppard always did their hard rockers better, Pyromania was a perfect blend of pop and rock. Hysteria leans a little too much towards the former. Finally, what really killed the album was the constant scrapping of material, and the use of three different producers. There's no telling how utterly amazing this album could have been had Def Lep stuck with Jim Steinman (of Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell fame, 35 million copies sold, end of ad) as their producer. As is, Hysteria and Euphoria tie for the second best Leppard release. Pyromania will never be topped. (By the way, if you want a quick half of Hysteria, just buy Vault, the greatest hits.)
Free Music Review: The BEST Rock album EVER!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Def Leppard's Hysteria is my favorite rock album of all time and it's also the best rock album ever made!!! Def Leppard was my very first band I got into, my very first rock album was from Def Leppard, they are my favorite band of all time and always will be! After all these years, I can't just listen to Hysteria one time, each time I listen to this album, I have to listen to it multiple times because it is THE ROCK ALBUM!! I never get bored of listening to these songs and I totally love Joe Elliott's sexy voice (especially on Women), the amazing guitar solos by legend Steve Clark (R.I.P. Steve!), the talented one-armed drummer Rick Allen, everything!
My favorites are Pour Some Sugar On Me which actually there were two different versions of the song. The album version starts out with "Step Inside, Walk This Way,You And Me Babe, Hey Hey!!" which is included in the Historia video and was never shown in the U.S. and then there's the video version which was from the In The Round, In Your Face live concert and I love them both!! (And as stated in The Vault album linear notes, Pour Some Sugar On Me is just about "pure SEX!!"), Love Bites (THE BEST rock ballad ever made and a #1 hit on Billboard!!), Women (I totally love Joe's vocals on this song and the way he sings is awesome!), Rocket (I love the long guitar solo!), Animal (I love how at the end of the song, you think it's over but it's not!), Armageddon It, Gods Of War (the dialog during this is so cool and it's like this totally epic song with long guitar solos, I love it!), Love And Affection, Excitable, Don't Shoot Shotgun, and Run Riot! I love this whole CD, and it's so unique, not like any rock/metal album I've ever heard!
Def Leppard is just such a unique band because no two albums sound alike. This CD is almost 20 years old and it's amazing how wonderful it is that it never gets old! A must buy for any rock fan!!! If you own only one rock CD, own Hysteria!!! You won't regret it!!!
Free Music Review: ROCK OF AGES AND BEYOND!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I first heard songs from HYSTERIA back in 1988, and along with Van Halen > OU812 was the album that got me into hard rock. This is still my all time favorite CD!!! Why do rock critics consistently overlook this musical gem??? So what if the lyrics are dumb and the production too slick! There is nothing else in recorded music like it past, present and future!!! Look at the numbers - 3 years, 2 re-recordings, 5 million British pounds, 12 tracks, 63 minutes, 7 hit singles, 6 of them going top 20 including a number one hit ("Love Bites"), 15 million copies sold, 3 years on the Billboard Top 200, one of the ten best selling albums in 1988/1989, a sold out world tour playing in the round - I could go on and on!!! And all of this in spite of all the [stuff] that they had to put up with - drummer Rick Allen's car accident which cost him his arm and guitarist Steve Clark's battle with alcohol (R.I.P. - Steamin' Steve). To anyone who reads this article - go buy, find or borrow a big stereo, buy a copy of HYSTERIA, press play and see, hear, feel and experience what I'm talking about. Furthermore, why is there no digitally remastered reissue of not just HYSTERIA but all of their classic albums, and especially for HYSTERIA, a deluxe edition with remixes, outtakes, b-sides and live tracks, and a DVD-Audio version remastered in 5.1 surround sound (by the way, it baffles me that Def Leppard would put out a DVD about the making of the album, but no digitally remastered reissue - what's the hold up?) Anyway, despite the naysayers who say this album is a pop sellout and the production is too-slick (they don't know what their talking about), I love the SOUND, which is what HYSTERIA is all about, because it's THE BEST-SOUNDING ALBUM EVER MADE!!! Yes, better than PYROMANIA, BACK IN BLACK, BOSTON, A NIGHT AT THE OPERA and METALLICA combined!!!
Free Music Review: The boys from Sheffield at their phenomenol apex Hit: 5 Stars
Back in 1987, Kurt Loder, then a reviewer for Rolling Stone magazine, wrote that every track on "Hysteria" "sparkles and burns." He went on to say that "Hysteria" sounds "terrific," and was well worth the wait. How right he was. It's a little hard to believe now, but Def Leppard was once a very relevant and sought after band. Though the Leps fell deep into obscurity by the mid-1980s, much of what the band did musically was waited on in breathless anticipation, once everyone got his act together.
Loder was right on target with his assessment of this album. Mutt Lange's production does indeed conjure a sparkling effect like Loder mentioned, which upped the ante in terms of what metal music could potentially sound like. "Hysteria" is a mixture of hard metal and crafty, excellent pop. Several of the songs didn't grab me right away when I first heard the album, even songs on the hit-heavy "first side," and in some ways, "Hysteria" still comes off as a rather odd but unique album, mostly due to the strange voices and sounds that Lange deftly mixed into some of the songs. Every tune on the first side eventually made its way into homes everywhere as singles and videos, catapulting Def Leppard into astronomical fame worldwide. The "second side" of the CD is just as good, culminating to the free-spiritied "Run Riot," a song I wish the band would include in its live performances. Start to finish, this is an unbelievable album -- no wonder it sold so well.
The music industry has changed drastically since 1987, but Leppard's "Hysteria" still holds a prominent place in rock 'n' roll lore. In fact, the album has more than retained its uniqueness and stands by itself in terms of sound and production. Play it for your grandkids!
