Free Music Notes for HysteriaFree Music Review: 62:38 of rock excellence!! Hit: 5 Stars
This is my all-time fav Def Leppard album, all their other albums are a very close 2nd. This is the very first CD I ever bought over 10 years ago. I got the cassette in '88 and I played it till it was worn out, then I got the CD. I've loved this album ever since it first came out almost 15 years ago. Pure, polished, hard, melodic rock. A true classic, a flawless performance of 12 songs. An unheard of 7 hit singles lace this epic album. 'Women', 'Rocket', 'Animal', 'Love Bites(a great hard rock ballad), 'Sugar'(#1 video on MTV in the summer of '88), 'Armageddon It' and 'Hysteria'(also a great ballad). Every song is polished to perfection. This album is so great, that almost all of the other 5 songs could have been singles as well. Especially 'Run Riot'(what a guitar solo!), and 'Love And Affection'. These are the last recordings of guitarist Steve Clark who passed away in 1991. It's hard to say what my fav song is, because I like them all. I put this one in the player, and I don't skip a track. Still just as relevant today as it was back in '87. 'Gods Of War' could apply to the war in the middle-east today, there's a segment of that song that plays a portion of a great Ronald Reagan speech speaking against terrorists attacks on the U.S.A. The song is fabulous as well, with a great guitar riff. Great guitar by Steve Clark and Phil Collen, great bass by Rick Savage, great drumming by Rick Allen, and great vocals by Joe Elliot all put together spell M-A-S-T-E-R-P-I-E-C-E! If you don't have it, I can't recommend it enough. ROCK ON!!
Free Music Review: Way better than these no-talent punks half their age Hit: 5 Stars
I'm 29 years old and I grew up with Def Leppard in the 80's. I always thought they were a top-notch metal band. Their songs were, and still are, catchy and, indeed, never sound dated.
I was lucky enough to catch Def Lep in concert in the late-80's and even luckier to get an almost front row view of them at the Live 8 sound-check here in Philly a few weeks back and they sound better than ever. They performed "Rock of Ages," covered "No Matter What" (Badfinger staple) and "Pour Some Sugar On Me." After hearing that and the actual performance the next day (thank goodness I chose to see it in person as MTV and sister station VH1 chose to neglect Def Lep in their "wonderful" coverage of Live 8), a wave of nostalgia hit me and I went home and jammed to Hysteria for the entire holiday weekend.
I find that I like and appreciate it more than ever. I remember MTV's heavy airplay of the video for "Love Bites" in 1988 and even as a 12 year-old (at that age hardly anyone wants to hear and/or see anything more than once), I never tired of it. To this day, I can watch that video or just listen to the song time and again and enjoy it just as much as the last time. Not too many songs or bands can get away with that.
I'm not a musicologist and the more in-depth reviews of Hysteria can be found elsewhere on this page. All I can suggest to people is to listen to Hysteria, and the rest of Def Lep's works, and you'll see for yourself that they're just like a fine wine: They improve with time.
Free Music Review: SURGING, JOLTING, MONSTER-PLATINUM ROCK!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I have been a huge Def Leppard fan ever since I got this album back in 1988. I remember hearing some of the songs on the radio before I got the album, and I finally got it with my 7th grade lunch money that I had been saving for awhile. It was the cassette, and I listened to it so many times that I wore it out! I purchased the CD a few years later, and I still have the same CD in my collection. This is without a doubt one of the greatest albums I've ever listened to. It contains an unheard-of 6 top-10 singles: "Rocket", "Animal", "Love Bites", "Pour Some Sugar On Me", "Armageddon It", and the title cut "Hysteria". The other 6 songs, "Women", "Run Riot", "Love And Affection", "Gods Of War", "Excitable", and "Don't Shoot Shotgun" are all great. This album is a great mix of slow and fast melodic rock songs. Pure, polished, musicianship is what you'll hear in this collection, the finest of the finest. This album is also the last recordings by the late-great guitar player Steve Clark. If you are a true Def Leppard fan, you probably already own this masterpiece. If you are a new Def Leppard fan, then I strongly suggest that you get this one! This album has sold over 10 million copies at least, and there is a reason why: Great, timeless music. This is a classic album that I never get tired of listening to. If you don't have it, pick it up and ROCK ON!!
Free Music Review: Hysteria still rocks today!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I still like Def Leppard's album Hysteria. It took me 12 months until August 1988 (long after its Aug. '87 release) to get it. That album just kept scoring so many hits that I had to get it! It is still a solid rock album. Pour Some Sugar on Me has that hip-hop edge to it, but still has that rock underbelly for it. Hysteria has the smoothest rock bridges I've heard from a band. Love Bites still sound soulful for a power ballad, as if they've ended bad relationships. Gods of War's dramatic intro I still like. Woman sounds like something from Pyromania but fits well for this album. Armageddon It has some unbelievable rhythm to it. Rocket sounds quite good in its full length. Many of the songs are over 5 minutes (5:46), (5:49), (5:41), (5:21), (6:34), (6:32), but they are all entertaining and keep you addicted for the whole time without you drifting away. One other surprise is Run Riot, where it's fully charged with its fast pace, versus the commercial sheen of the other songs. Easily one of Mutt Lange's best produced albums--he made the band show its true colors. It's so over the top, big sounds and all, on this album, and that's why it's been a huge seller ever since! Although I mostly listen to R&B and rap albums and some pop stuff, I like rock bands too, and this album was in my collection and played just as much as Bobby Brown and others that were hot in the summer and fall of 1988. Undeniably solid rock at the band's highest point!
Free Music Review: The Greatest Rock Album EVER! Hit: 5 Stars
Everyone seems to dislike Def Leppard and Hysteria because it was a huge part of the 80s Hair Band movement. Well, I'm here to tell everyone that this album is the greatest music I have ever heard. I'm serious. This is such a great album. Usually a so-called "good" album has its 2 or 3 hit singles and a bunch of other crap songs on it. Not only does Hysteria have 7 hit singles on it, the 5 other tracks on it are all worthy of being singles. This album just seems to have something on it that can appeal to everyone. It has its line up of singles (Rocket, Women, Animal, Love Bites, Hysteria, Armegeddon it, and of course Pour Some Sugar on Me) along with Gods of War, Excitable, Don't Shoot Shotgun, Love and Affection, and Run Riot. Another thing I need to mention- I am 15 years old. So don't you dare think for one second that this album is "dated" or stale. If a fickle 15-year-old can fall in love with it, you can too. Pour Some Sugar on Me is my personal favorite form Hysteria. I first heard it on the radio and I thought that it was a new song from a band I hadn't heard of. I really really liked the song,it had such a great rhythm and I just loved everything about it. So I looked it up on the internet and I found out the song was nearly 15 years old. I was amazed. I just thought it was a great new song. I had no idea it could turn me on to such a great band. I now own every album they have released.
