Free Music Review: Whoa! NWOBM!
Hit: 5 Stars

Like many other reviewers have said if this album didn't say Def Leppard on it you would never been able to guess that it was the same band that created "Pyromania" and "Hysteria", actually it would be hard to identify this with "High n' Dry"! Unlike many people here I don't see classic hard rock influences, this album is friggn heavy metal. This is thanks to the production of Colonel Tom Allom, which gives this group a Judas Priest like sound as opposed to their later pop-metal albums. This was back then when Def Leppard was part of the NWOBM, a wave of British metal that emphasized on fast riffs, louder sound, sped-up drum sections, rapid-fire rhythm, and in many cases the double-guitar assault(the lattest started by the Priest). Unlike later records the Led Zeppelin influence is alot more clearer due to the lack of pop sensibilities, giving the band a neorock sound.

Track listing:
1.Rock Brigade (3:09): A Led Zeppelin influenced guitar track with a guitar solo by Pete Willis, he is actually really good. He is a very heavy guitarist compared to Phil Coleen.
2.Hello America (3:27): The first music promo by the band I believe, also Led Zeppelin inspired but with a synthesizer in the background to give the song a 'layered' feeling. Steve plays a pretty heavy riff throughout that contrasts with the background synth which is light.
3.Sorrow is a Woman (3:54): A dark song about women(one thing that is similar to later Leppard releases!) Steve and Pete both share lead duties on this track: 1st: Steve 2nd: Pete and then they both do a solo towards the end of the song. Joe Elliot has a Halford like voice on this track.
4.It Could Be You (2:33): Has a fast track sound that slows down during the chorus, oddly bears a resemblance to the "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin.
5.Satellite (4:28): Reminds me of "Evening Star" by the Priest, not because of the sound but because of structure. Pretty good song, don't exactly remember what it sounds like.
6.When the Walls Came Tumbling Down (4:44): Can't believe Leppard actually wrote this! It sounds like an Iron Maiden or King Diamond song with the intro and even the lyrics: "National suicide was proclaimed", as opposed to "Foolin'" or "Women"! This is probably the darkest subject matter the band ever did since it tells of a tale of the sky turning GOLD! and everybody going crazy! Pretty good solo by Steve.
7.Wasted (3:45): The great solo by Steve Clark is in this track (most notable). The song itself is speed metal-like, bearing a resemblance to early Iron Maiden. A minor note is Rick Allen's short drum attack after Steve's solo (which is breathtaking). Amazing lyrical detail, even though Joe Elliot hadn't drank one ounce of whiskey when he first wrote it.
8.Rocks Off (3:42): An extremely guitar-driven song, they even have a part where they split the sound from Steve's guitar where it plays a riff in one ear for 2 seconds then another in the other the next. Guitar solo is amazing, sounds like Joe Perry on steroids.
9.It Don't Matter (3:21): Best known for the lyrical quality, Joe Elliot has a knack for making extremely good lyrics out of a few words. Even though it is very repeatable, the song is very good.
10.Answer to the Master (3:13): Heavy Metal!!! Very Virtuosic guitar solo by one of the guys (I think it might have been Pete) that rivals EVH's "Light up the Sky" solo. It has a loud intensity to it that is prevalent on some thrash metal records without the extreme heaviness.
11.Overture (7:44): Makes up for the fact that every song on here is less than 5:00 long. Starts out with a light melody section where Joe Elliot says a little message (somewhere along the lines of "this message I bring to you, passed down through the ages") and then the group breaks out in a Boston-like jam with three solos by Steve and one by Pete. It then ends with the same sound that was at the beginning. My favorite of the songs on here.
