Free Music Review: LEPPARD B-SIDES BETTER THAN MOST BANDS A-SIDES
Hit: 5 Stars

Leave it to DEF LEPPARD to throw together an album of throwawaytracks and still have an album better than most I have heard. RETROACTIVE combines songs from that span Leppard's 20 year career into one album. "Desert Song" is the real great piece here. Lyrically and musically a step in the right direction for Leppard's SLANG album. It is musically complex and a true tribute to the kind of guitar player Steve "Steamin" Clark was. I had been a fan of "Ring of Fire" since I first turned over my "Pour Some Sugar On Me" 45 and when I heard about this album i hoped it would be on it. Not only was it on there, but the boys had gone and added a new intro to it that fit the song like a "Velvet Glove". I stole the term "Velvet Glove" from the album's second song "Fractured Love", which begins with a tribal jungle drum beat into a dark mysterious beginning then goes into a hard rocking chorus that blows your socks off. The triple guitar assult(Clark, Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell) sounds great and singer Joe Elliott has never sounded so good. All in all a great album that really rocks. DO YOU WANNA GET ROCKED?

Free Music Review: Vintage Def Leppard!
Hit: 5 Stars

I thought most of the other reviwers summed it up really well, this album of B-sides and throw away tracks are better that most bands A-sides. This could have easily been a full length studio album all on its own. 'Fractured Love' is awesome, (what a guitar riff!) 'Desert Song' is fabulous, Steve Clark plays a great guitar solo. 'Ride Into The Sun' starts off with a piano intro and then fades into a roaring guitar riff.(very cool) There is an electric version of 'Two Steps Behind', and 3 versions of 'Miss You In A Heartbeat'. One of them is hidden at the end of the CD. Many of these songs were taken from the "Hysteria" writing and/or recording sessions, and a few are new tracks. I can't say what my fav song is, because I like them all. I've owned this one since the day it came out my senior year in high school. I've spent many, many excellent hours jammin' on this CD. Def Leppard is the band that inspired me to play guitar. This album has never got the credit that it deserves, and one listen will show you why. Joe Elliot & Co. continue to rip it up on this one. Do yourself a favor and get THE best album of 1993. ROCK ON!

Free Music Review: A B-sidesCD that outscores the A-sides
Hit: 5 Stars

If there is an album by Leppard that could be classified as HEAVY, here it is. One listen to this CD, and you can't help butwonder why these guys kept gems like "Desert Song", "Fractured Love", "From the inside", "Ring of fire", "I wanna be your hero" in the cellar for so long. Desert Song takes the cake for being the most enigmatic and haunting Leppard songs ever; a dry parched ride into the desert, until Steve Clark unleashes the flood with his lead solo. This one song alone bears the strength of what the band was capable of, and how underachieving they are in terms of creativity (albeit some excellent tracks in SLANG). The songs "Fractured Love" and "From the inside" delve into the never before seen darker side, yet so genius side of the band. It really becomes clear now how much this band misses Clark and Allen's left arm once you are through with this album. I need not mention regarding "Two Steps Behind", "Miss you.." and "Action"...they are vintage Lep stuff and good listen, but never the type of songs that would intrigue the listener.

Free Music Review: Underrated
Hit: 5 Stars

This is absolutely one of the most underrated CDs I have. I think it's a cryin' shame they decided to focus on releasing singles of the two sappy ballads. Meanwhile, the world never got to hear the GREAT songs on the rest of this CD. I like power metal ballads of the 80s, but these fall way short. Meanwhile, "Desert Song" starts off this CD with a big bang. What a tremendous tune all around. "From the Inside" was done with three members of the band Hothouse Flowers, and is a reminder that a slow, acoustic song doesn't have to be overly-sentimental mush. Both songs are a little different for DefLep, but certainly not in any cliche way. Then you have the B-sides to the Hysteria singles, like the "Ride Into the Sun" remix, and the "I Wanna Be Your Hero" ... Finally, "Ring of Fire" is one of the Lep's best songs EVER. To this day, I am flabbergasted it got left off the Hysteria album. It's a shame the public never got to hear these songs as singles.

Free Music Review: An incredible collection of B-sides and unreleased tracks
Hit: 5 Stars

Retroactive is a great collection of B-sides and previously unreleased tracks. Def Leppard has always held back some of their strongest tunes as B-sides. Here, these songs get their chance to shine. "Desert Song" and "Fractured Love" are two dreamlike, mystical rockers that flow together like one song. "Action" is a high-speed shot of adrenaline. "Ring of Fire", "She's Too Tough" and "Ride Into The Sun" are straight-ahead rockers. "From The Inside" is a dark, acoustic piece with powerful lyrics. And "Miss You In A Heartbeat" is a beautiful song, which sounds great in all 3 versions on this CD. The only disappointment is the electric version of "Two Steps Behind", which sounds like an intentional parody of the song. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes the music of Def Leppard, whether it be their old stuff or more recent releases.
