Free Music Notes for XFree Music Review: Nothing great at first - now I love it! Hit: 5 Stars
I am a huge Def Leppard fan, and have been since I was 11 (I'm 26 now). I wasn't sure what to expect when X came out - on first listen I was dissappointed and just started skipping through the songs listening to bits of them. The only one that stood out was Long, Long way to go - which is a beautiful song and grabs you on the very first listen. After a couple of days I went back to it because I knew there had to be some more great songs in there somewhere, and I was rewarded! Torn To Shreds is brilliant - the chorus is wicked - possibly their best since Retroactive, and it is a very rocking song also. Unbelievable is another awesome song that is a very obvious single, although it is another ballad (as Long, Long way is). For me those are the three standout tracks at the moment, although I haven't given much attention to the rest - Girl Like You and Now are great, harder songs also, but not as good as the above three. For the average Lep fan, the infectious hook-laden choruses are all over this album, Joe's voice is there and sounds very good, he is quite restrained though compared to earlier albums, the trademark background vocals are there, but one point is that the guitars play a much lesser role on this album as compared to previous efforts. Most of their earlier songs were guitar-driven, filled with memorable riffs and solos, great bridge sections and very distinctive intros. The songs on X are all based around the song and the guitars are more complimentary and buried into the mix. If you listen though, there are some great guitar bits in there that compliment the songs brilliantly. The one thing missing is the epic lep guitar piece - Die Hard the Hunter, Gods of War, White Lightening, Ring of Fire, Paper Sun - there is no equivalent on this album - which is disappointing, but other than that - I love it - it fits really nicely in with their other albums, but is different enough to stand out. It has possibly two of the best songs they have in their collection in Long, Long Way and Torn to Shreds, and is (in my opinion) a big improvement over Euphoria (in the quality of the songs and hooks). Hopefully when they play live they will spice the songs up with some more guitar bits (something they are really good at). The Leps are back, and they've definitely still got a lot to offer.....
Free Music Review: Great CD from the greatest band! Hit: 5 Stars
This is apparently one of those albums that either you love or you hate. Me personally I love it! It doesn't have the edge of say Pyromania but it has hooks and melodies galore! While not a major success like Hysteria and no huge songs like Pour Some Sugar on Me or Love Bites, its still a great CD! Heres my review for each song!1. Now- A great song! The first single off the album. Not a fav. but still a great song! 10/10 2. Unbelievable-A nice ballad, while not penned by the band, still a great ballad! 10/10 3. You're So Beautiful- I think this one has radio all over it. A solid tempo and a great chrous! This one should be one radio! 10/10 4. Everyday- Nice mid tempo song with pop flavoring all over it. while no "Photograph", its still great! 10/10 5. Long, Long Way to Go- A haunting ballad which I think would be a radio smash! Not penned by the band as well, but still great! 10/10 6. Four Letter Word- One of the more rocking songs off the album, its on the radio and i hear it farely often. Good tune! 10/10 7. Torn to Shreds- Another mid tempo song! I love this song, and I think radio would too. Beautiful! 10/10 8. Love Don't Lie- My least fav. song on the album. This one doesnt appeal to me for some reason. 7/10 9. Gravity- different style Leppard. Sort of a dance beat. Good Song! 10/10 10. Cry- More of a modern alternative kinda song! good tune, and a great Chorus! 10/10 11. Girl Like You- Nice little tune, another one i believe radio should love! Fun! 10/10 12. Let me be the One- A ballad. Its good, but not like Long Long Way to Go. 9/10 13. Scar- reminds me of a white lightning. Good tune! It was put one here for a bit of old Def Leppard feel! 10/10 This is a great CD which i dont understand why some hate. Do they have to come out with a Pyromania or a Hysteria every time! They tried that with Euphoria but still some people want to complain saying its to old sounding! Then what do you want! Everyone would love this if it was Aerosmith or Bon Jovi, but since it doesnt sound like Hysteria, Leppard fans dont want it! Every Def Leppard CD is great and this one should be in your collection! A def. must have good rock album flavored with pop and melody! simply great!
Free Music Review: "X" Marks the Spot Hit: 5 Stars
I only review an album after I have listened to it at least 5 times because I feel I have to give the music a chance become a bit familiar before I judge it. Otherwise I feel like it's a first impression. I bought this CD a few days ago and can't take it out of my cd player. I really, really like this cd. Listen to it a few times and you will understand what I'm saying. It's as if Def Leppard has said, "Ok, we know pop music is what's hot right now so we're gonna show how you do it with depth, musicianship, artistry and hooks sent straight from heaven." I should say that I'm not cynical by nature so I don't automatically discard a song as trash simply because it has a "pop" sound. The first 5 songs are straight ahead pop, not very heavy but amazingly solid and addictive in their own right. However, the sixth song ("Four Letter Word")kicks the album into overdrive. Dep Leppard has proven over and over that they can rock the house so they may not feel the need to travel down the same path. I truly hate to use this word but this album sounds completely "fresh" and necessary. It doesn't, for example, sound like an out of touch band trying desperately to hang on. Any song on this album would blow virtually any song on the radio out of the water. My favorite songs are: #5 Long, Long Way to Go--This is an absolute pop gem. I think it should have been the first single, unless they are saving it for the home run 3rd single. It's not overly produced, sappy or predictable. Great vocals. #2 Unbelievable--Another great, great pop song. The harmonies are outstanding (as usual) and it has kind of a rolling sound that I love. Hooks galore. #6 Four Letter Word--Actually sounds like AC/DC to me, but richer. This is the first hard rocking track and comes at the perfect time in the album. What's the 4 letter word? Lust. This would have been a single in the old days, but not today. #3 You're So Beautiful--The most "familiar" sounding song on the cd. Pure Def Leppard, and glorious. #8 Love Don't Lie--Very syncopated (is that how you spell it?) and rhythmic. This one really grew on me. What am I saying? The entire album is a current addiction of mine and I am not a Def Leppard freak.
Free Music Review: X-actly what I didn't Xpect Hit: 5 Stars
Bonjovi releases an album called X - goes to number one, sells millions, everyone loves it. (nothing personal against Bonjovi)Aerosmith relases an album called X - goes to number one, sells millions, everyone loves it.(nothing presonal against Aerosmith) Def Leppard release an album called X - does pathetically in the charts, fans cry they've sold out, album sells next to nothing, radio won't play it, and no one wants anything to do with them. Got this album a month later from its original release date. I checked all the reviews till then and found that a majority of people hated this album. The complaint was that it was too soft and sounded nothing like leppard's other stuff pyromania, hysteria etc. Most hardcore leppard fans feel cheated but you really can't blame them. I was upset when I found how quickly this album fell in the charts. I was hoping it would be a killer album. It's about time the world gave these guys a break. Anyway got X finally and put it on. My firts reaction to NOW was, this isn't leppard. But on listeing to it again, and then the whole album, I found that it was amazing. From start to finish, this album rocks! Yeah this album is not driven by hard edged guitar parts, but at the same time it ain't soft and silly. Its a great blend of modern music mixed in with the traditional Lep sound. When Euphoria came out (their so called comeback album), I hated it; pathetic production and the overall album wasn't good. Even Phil now says that there were mistakes and they could have done a better job. With X it seems like there's a new surge of life in leppard group and it seems that after a long time these guys are having fun again. I feel that this album is merely a spring board for them. Its pointing them in a new direction and I'm sure one day they'll create big hit album, which would be hard like Pyro but it would have that great modern feel to it and it would please old and new fans. Trust me if you like some really enjoyable rock music then get this cd. Just so glad they made this album and not another Euphoria.
Free Music Review: Wow!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I've read reviews from Billboard, CD Now, and other "reputable" sites with regard to this album, and all I can say is that either a) they're deaf from listening to all the garbage thats out now, or b) they never even listened to the album. Now, I'm not some self centered music critic who writes for a magazine, but I know good music when I hear it. I have yet to hear anything this year that sounds this good. Leppard have managed to bridge the gap between teenage pop and hard rock. Potentially opening a flood gate of new fans. Now, if the critics would be honest, this album is Hysteria II, not in sound, but in end result. If they continue to dog it, then the Backstreet Boys and Britney will rule the land for ever. Since they dispise them, I'm not sure why they don't get on the bandwagon with this album and allow the bridge to take place. The song "Now" would nto be an obvious choice for a first single, never the less it is a very solid song. The second single, "Long, Long Way to Go" is the "Love Bites" of 2002. A good ballad from a rock band is one that doesn't sound like a rock ballad at all. Songs like "Cry", "Scar" and "Torn To Shreds" should tear up rock radio, while potential hit's like "You're So Beautiful". "Girl Like You" and "Love Don't Lie" should have a field day on top 40. For those Leppard fans who don't listen to the hard stuf anymore, there are even a couple for you in "Unbelievable", "Long, Long Way to Go" and "Let Me Be the One". "Everyday" and "Four Letter Word" are also well written. It's rare an album offers so much without being angry, political, or antagonistic. This album is just plain ear candy, although not overdone. Def Leppard has done it just right, and for those of you who like a good drum roll, Rick Allen is playing acoustic drums on this one giving the songs a more natural, less industrial sound. Contrary to reviews seen other places, "X" does in fact mark the spot, and after 25 years, Def Leppard shows they still have it.
