Free Music Review: Better songwriting than Pyromania
Hit: 5 Stars

Do I dare say that? Yes. Overall, the album's cuts are better. This album has the potential to equal or top Hysteria with the number of singles. As great as Pyromania was, there's only 3-4 songs that immediately come to mind from it.

And for those fans you say they've sold out. Give me a break--it's...if you do, ... if you don't. One review earlier asked where are the songs like...then went on to name stuff off of Pyromania and High and Dry. If you think Lep sold out on THIS album--you're sadly mistaken as they've slowly grown more mainstream over the years. You're probably the same people who refused to by Slang because it wasn't "traditional" Lep.

With all the whining aside, I don't think you'll find a better album this year with as many sure fire hits to start the album off with. X simply kicks from Now to Cry, before finding a few weaker songs before closing with a classic song, Scar. The songs in between are definately Def Leppard, with a modern edge that have much potential for crossover appeal. Gravity with it's dance hall sound, is quite infectious without being overly trendy. Love Don't Lie has a great guitar feel, with a chorus that grows on you more and more. Torn To Shreds is a great mid-tempo song, quite possibly the best suited for radio as it's softer versus and killer chorus has a broad appeal. Everyday is perhaps one of the best songs on the disk, while Long Long Way To Go is one of their best "ballads", period. And did I mention the power riff, AC/DC like Four Letter Word?

I'm a believer that this isn't a comeback album because, to me, Def Leppard never went away. What it is, however, is the best album they've done in almost 20 years.

Free Music Review: Def Lep Songwriting Still 'X'-cellent
Hit: 5 Stars

I have enjoyed Def Leppard throughout their entire career, and the signature Def Lep sound is as good today as it was in 1980. They have proven themselves outstanding song-writers over the past two decades and this latest collection is a testament to their talent and consistency.

For those that would criticize this album as 'not hard-rock enough', I defy any of you to re-play the last track SCAR and say it is anything but vintage Def Leppard. Dare I even say, it would hold up (quite well, in fact) were it originally released on Pyromania. The guitar work is undeniably Lep. It is a great song, and worth the purchase price alone to add it to my Def Lep collection. Far beyond this closing track, the album's first seven songs are all very good. 'Now' and 'Four Letter Word' are good examples of New Millenium Lep. Different from Pyromania/High N Dry Lep, but not inferior. 'Everyday' is my favorite track, outside of 'Scar', and it impossibly catchy.

If you are still looking for them to produce an entire album similar to their early 80's era, then you haven't been paying attention. Those erst-while teenagers are now forty-somethings, who have an incredible two decades of life to draw upon (not-to-mention the lineup changes) and it shows in their songwriting, as it must to keep the art true to the artist.
That being said, the track 'gravity' seems to be a Slang leftover and doesn't really fit into this collection. It could have been a stronger album by omitting it.
Even so, I can't recommend this disc highly enough for true Def Lep fans. The boys from Sheffield can still ROCK and it's nice to see the adventure continue.

Free Music Review: "X" Citable once again, look out radio!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Let me start off by saying yes, I am a die hard Lep fan and would buy anything these guys put out. Having said that, let me give you as non-biased a review as possible. This album is NOT Pyromania or Hysteria. Before you freak out, let me say that this album is their best work since then and I agree wholeheartedly w/the members of Leppard finally saying "Hey, the 90's are over. We tried to be alternative w/"Slang" (1996), it did not work (commercially). We tried to rock out like in the past w/"Euphoria" (1999) and it did much better than "Slang" and did score a #1 hit on Rock Radio w/the infectious "Promises", but the ablum was still not as great as we can be." Well, "X" has everything a rock fan wants in an album, killer drums, Joe Elliott's raspy vocals, guitar laden tracks w/the trademark Leppard choruses. This "X" album combines everything you loved about their past w/a modern appeal that encompasses all that Leppard is about. I will not go track by track, but "Long Long Way to Go" is their strongest ballad since "Hysteria" and "Four Letter Word" is a flat out rocker. What I love about Leppard is that they don't try to solve the world's problems. They sing about relationships and you can put their albums on from start to finish and know that you are not going to only hear one or two decent songs. If radio gives some of these tunes a chance, like they have w/"Now", then we will see 2, perhaps 3 more albums out of these early 40's superstars over the next decade. This album is not about making more money, they have plenty of it. These guys love music and it shows. I am X-static the Leps have "sugared" me all over again.

Free Music Review: A great band keeps going...
Hit: 5 Stars

For all those who really listened and might have given this album only 4 stars, I appreciate you honest opinion. For those who listened once and traded it in, or those who complain that it is not like their old stuff, I have one word...DUH! These guys are pushing forty. They've grown up. Their music is more contemporary, conservative, mature, whatever words you want to use for this CD. But it is still, by all means, DEF LEPPARD. There is no mistaking their sound or their craftsmanship. I thought this CD was great, as I think all of their CDs have been. I too have been a fan of the Leps since High and Dry, and I have grown as well. Seeing them go through their trials and mistakes and focusing on great songs that do not ponder the situations of their lives. They could have written dark and bitter music that reflected Rick Allen's loss of his arm, or Steve Clarks death, but they don't. They do their music and they do it well. This CD is full of smooth and poignant rock melodies and choruses. The more I listen to it, the more I love it. These guys are getting better with age and I can't wait for the day they get the recognition they deserve. They started the days of heavy metal hair bands, the difference is, they have real talent that has kept them going to this day. Other bands have been falling by the wayside, surviving off retro concerts and a memory of the glory days. No offense to them, but none can match up to the Leps for sheer song writing ability.
X is an awesome CD and a great show of growth on Def Leppards part to make something great.
