Free Music Notes for Yeah!Free Music Review: Either you get it or you don't Hit: 5 Stars
Yeah! is what a cover album should be. Not simply songs that were once popular and then redone note for note by a new band. Def Leppard reconstructs to what American ears might be obscure songs. These are songs that were instrumental (pun intended) in forming the band's taste in music in the 1970's. Either listeners will buy into the concept that these are song Def Leppard liked and wanted to do or they will complain that they didn't cover obvious songs or just retread one fo their old albums.
The end result is a solid album, frankly one of the best they have done for a long while. Perhaps it is because they could "be someone else" rather than the particularly contrived X album which was more of an unintended self-parody.
Yeah! is a great album for not only Def Leppard fans, but fans of the 1970's UK rock scene.
Free Music Review: If you wanna get rocked... Hit: 5 Stars
then this is a great album to buy! Joe and the guys sound as good today as they did 20-some years ago and this cover album is a great example of that. Not only is the music great, but it's cool to see where the band came from -- who they were listening to (and probably still listen to) and who inspired them when they were getting started. Covers of Bowie, Rod Stewart and the Kinks (I think Waterloo Sunset is one of my favorite tracks) are attention-getting and very tastefully done. Another track in particular that stands out is Rock On. I was really surprised because I'd never cared much for that song, but Def's version thoroughly rocks -- especially live. They're on tour promoting YEAH! this summer and if you have the opportunity you should definitely catch them. The 4th of July show was perfectly spectacular.
Free Music Review: This cd is GREAT fun! Hit: 5 Stars
Speaking honestly, I never usually get very excited about a "covers" cd. But this is one BIG exception! What does it for me is the song selection. The Def Ones cover some familiar artists, but chose some rather obscure songs. Highlights for me are Rock On (heavy guitar ending!), Waterloo Sunset (very Def Lep sounding!), Little Bit Of Love, The Golden Age Of Rock 'n' Roll and (being a huge Blondie fan) Hanging On The Telephone. After reading the liner notes, the band seemed to have had great fun putting this together and I hope it stirs up their creative juices enough to hit the studio to write/release the greatest Def Leppard record we've yet to hear. Wishful thinking, I guess. Anyway, this is a very refreshing and FUN listen... makes me wanna look up the originals! Highly recommended!
Free Music Review: Yeah! (2006) Hit: 5 Stars
For their follow up to 2005's "Rock of Ages" complation, Def Leppard decided to release a covers album "Yeah" to pay tribute to their influences. To the bands credit they stay away from most of the artists that they chose to covers biggest hits, when they could have easily choose songs that where better known. I only knew around four of the songs before I heard "Yeah". I find "Yeah" to be what a good covers album should be. The band turns to on to their influences and makes many of the songs into their own. Highlights include: No Matter What, 20th Century Boy, Hanging on the Telephone, and Hellraiser. Phil Collen's vocal on Stay with Me is awesome, it sounded so much like Rod Stewart. "Yeah" is a good album old and new fans of Def Leppard. There's a little something for everyone on "Yeah".
Free Music Review: Joe Elliot Rocks Hit: 5 Stars
This album reminds you of everything you always liked about Def Leppard : catchy songs, lots of hooks, slick guitar work, and tight vocals. It's fun to see what songs bands choose when making a covers albums and this is a great and varied selection. The band stays close to the original versions but adds just enough of the 'Def Leppard' treatment to make it their own. The trademark layers of guitars and vocals are all there. But the highlight of this CD is hearing Joe Elliot cover so many vocal styles with ease and conviction. We always knew he was a great singer but now we know all the other things he can also do with his voice. Every song features a stellar lead vocal performance. Nothing against the rest of the band, but this album succeeds because Joe is the man.
