Free Music Review: Never Would've Thought
Hit: 5 Stars

*Gasp* The heart beat at the end of Pink Maggit proceeds to finish...and then my reaction. Simply amazing this cd is. So dark at times and this is definitely music at it's best. I enjoy all of Deftones albums, they're amazing. This album certainly isn't perfect, but still amazing. Here's the track reviews.
1.Back To School (Mini Maggit) 8.5/10...Good song. I know it was added on just to make a hit, and his has some rap in it, and seems out of place, but sometimes i do enjoy chino's adrenaline-esque rapping.
2.Feiticeira 9/10...Very good song, but also quite unusual. It starts off with a quick riff, followed by Chino's vocals which then the drums come in. This song is unusal because it lacks a chorus and this is actually a formula I could get used to.
3.Digital Bath 9/10...A very mellow song. Quite simply amazing, the lyrics involve Chino describing a homocide so to speak, of electricuting a girl in a bath tub.
4.Elite 8.5/10...Right when you think you've got this cd figured out, you're thrown off by this piece of work. "Elite" can go right up there with the Deftones heaviest songs list (engine no. 9, lotion, headup, hexagram, when girls telephone boys) Chino screams so hard in this song that it almost gives off a mechanical effect. It's actually a nice change of pace.
5.Rx Queen 8/10...Alot like Digital Bath and the chorus is amazing while the verses are only decent.
6.Street Carp 7/10...Basically an average Deftones rock song. I would definitely like this song more if it wasn't for the annoying vocals towards the end where Chino repeats "write it down! now did you get it get it!?"
7.Teenager 7.5/10...Deftones softest song to this point..and very turn-table driven. Extremely soft..get's a bit boring.
8.Knife Party 9/10...Now while the cd lost momentum towards the middle, 'knife party' is the song that picks it back up, and the last 5 songs on this cd definitely make the cd. Features some great female vocals.
9.Korea 10/10...'Korea' holds the second heaviest song title on 'White Pony'. Just extremely good.
10.Passenger 10/10...This is one of those rare occasioins where a song strikes me on my first listen. Features Maynard James Keenan from Tool. Just great.
11.Change (In The House Of Flies) 10/10...First hit off of 'White Pony' and deservingly so. Very depressing and Frank Delgado's effects blend well with Carpenter's guitar. Great song.
12.Pink Maggit 9.5/10...This is "back to school"'s mother. This is where the song came from. It is a great song, but the mellow part carries on for awhile but the transition from soft to heavy is great. Plus the heart beat at the end is amazing.

Just buy this. You will not regret it. Also get their other 4 cd's.

Ok, I cant even classify Deftones or stick them to a label. They're too good for that. They're sound is as unique and as beautiful as their songs. To me, they are unparalleled, and this CD proves it. Every song on the cd has a different emotion and feeling that is conveyed. Here is what every song makes me feel...

-Back To School- A rush from start to finish, a feeling of energy, emotion, and action. You'll find you cant get this song out of your head. Awesome in every way.

-Feticeria- Anyone who says this song is mediocre, needs to hear it again. My favorite, the vocals and drumbeat fit together perfectly. Just listen to the drums. The bridge for this song is AMAZING.

-Digital Bath- I can only convey this song in one word... BEAUTIFUL.

-Elite- Get angry! Anytime that you're mad at someone and feel like you need release, listen to this song. Dont pay attention to the lyrics, just the sound of it. You'll think they wrote this song just for you.

-RX Queen- Another song where the drums, vocals, and guitz work together like harmony. Great song. Deep and Dark.

-Street Carp- Good rush of energy and Guitar riffs. Classic song that holds its ground after many times played.

-Teenager- Mellow, dramatic song. Chill out or sleep. Again, the beat is amazing. I love the way the DJ works into this song.

-Knife Prty- Out of anyone I've talked to, they'd say that this was their favorite song off the CD, and you'll see why. Its amazing, deep, and beautifully put together. GREAT.

-Korea- This song is like a suckerpunch. It comes out of nowhere and it blows you away. It comes in hard, calms down, gets hard again, and never lets you forget it. I love the sound.

-Passenger- Maynard's appearance on this is great. This song is so elegant, yet stays true to distorted guitar. Chino's voice and Maynard's are so much on the same level you'll have a hard time differentiating. This song is the best on the cd.

-Change(in the house of flies)- This song is so full of life to me, I can listen to it once only listening to the singing and be blown away, then do the same for the drums, then guitar, then bass, and it all has different effects. Great song.

-Pink Maggit- Perfect ending for a magnificent cd. Instead of just landing a hard song and dropping you off, leaving you wanting more, this song eases you slowly and dramatically towards the end of the cd. Oh, you'll still be wanting more, but this last song will at least make the cd seem more complete.

And thats what I think about this cd. You'll love it, trust me. This CD is worth buying. Through and through.

Free Music Review: I hate missing out on things.
Hit: 5 Stars

For a long time, I never really could get into the Deftones. I even saw them live at Ozzfest a long, long time ago, and they still didn't leave an impression on me. And, in my teen years, I went through this horribly immature anti-numetal phase, which didn't exactly help. So, with a few years, and a bit of growth, I got to the point where I thought I might like this album if I gave it a chance, but I kept putting it off, thinking "Eh, I'll get to it someday". And now, having finally gotten around to it, I find myself in the oh-so-familiar position of kicking myself for letting my prejudices, or whatever stopping me from enjoying some really great music. But enough of my life story already. Let's get to the album.

I previously used the term "numetal", which is commonly affixed to the Deftones, and to a certain extent it's accurate, as they were one of the founding bands of that scene. However, I would say that this album in particular hardly constitutes a numetal album at all. There are maybe one or two songs that might fit that categorization, but that's it. Otherwise, the album is very ambient and experimental overall, with some nice electronic touches to add a cool sense of eclecticism. Chino's vocals are a bit of an acquired taste, but they are unique, diverse, and pretty damn cool. Also, Abe Cunningham is an absolute groove demon of a drummer, and pretty versatile as well.

As I sort of mentioned before, this album is full of diversity. You've got heavier tracks, like "Back to School", "Street Carp", and the purely psychotic "Elite", and more laid-back and subdued tracks, like the incredibly hypnotic "Digital Bath" (one of my favorite songs and song titles), the techno-tinged "Teenager", and "Passenger", which features none other than the mighty Maynard James Keenan on vocals. "Pink Maggit" is epic and haunting, with a reprisal of the "Back to School" chorus to add a nice bookending effect, and "Change (In the House of Flies)" alternates between crashing choruses and creepy melodies. Every song here is distinctive, and great.

I really can't believe I've taken so long to finally come around to this album, and this band. Now I can't stop listening to it, and am really looking forward to hearing the new album, "Saturday Night Wrist". Gotta look into some Team Sleep as well.

But hey, better late than never, right?

Free Music Review: oh god they should have 500 stars...
Hit: 5 Stars

i LOVE this album. i bought it b-cuz my mom says it is her favorite. i bought it with an open mind, expecting at least a mediocre CD. what i found shot me through hell and back again. it was so good! here is my personal review of each song on the album:

1. back to school (mini maggit): rap/rock song, sorta like LP or limp bizkit. it is actually a grow-on-you song because it doesn't sound like deftones. but listen to it with an open mind and you will love it. one of my favorites. (only featured on re-release.) 10/10

2. feiticeira: a mediocre song, no chorus! the beginning beat is pretty cool, but the lyrics don't mean much. 6/10

3. digital bath: my mom's favorite song in the world. i like the beat. they lyrics are kind of disturbing... 10/10

4. elite: the hardest song on the album. it has a good meaning that all celebrities should think about. 8/10

5. RX queen: OH GOD!!! MY FAVE!!! this is the best song on the album! the chorus is so melodic and it also has a good meaning that all celebrities should think about too. 10/10

6. street carp: an OK song. it is the shortest one on the album. the chorus has a "sum 41" feel to it. even though i like it, i find myself skipping it alot. 6/10

7. teenager: slow. terrible singing. worst song on the album. it sounds like my great-grandmother singing with a hernia. 4/10

8. knife prty: second worst song on the album. too slow and long. i skip this, teenager, and street carp alot. 4 1/2/10

9. korea: second hardest song on the album. a good one too. not quite "a fave" though. it has a good beat and a good song to skate to. 8/10

10. passenger: my second favorite song on the album. maynard james keenan from the band tool is on this song. too long though, but the vocals more than make up for that. 10/10

11. change (in the house of flies): my third favorite song on the album. it is a sad sorta song an a good song to listen to if you are sad. 10/10

12. pink maggit: i don't like this. has similar lyrics to back to school. to slow and long. has a good meaning, though. 6/10

this got 91 1/2 out of 120. doesn't sound like it made very good, but it did. trust me. buy this CD with low expectations and it will grow on you like a wildfire on a redwood tree. (funny, huh? :P)

Free Music Review: Rap and rock combine in an explosive album
Hit: 5 Stars

The Deftones' "White Pony" is a bizarre mix of angst, dissonant rock and hip-hop sensibilities that is still hard to define after nine years.

The lyrics are most ground up, vague messages of fury. Honestly, it's hard to even conceive what Chino Moreno means in the song "Korea" when he screams "Night time! Cavity! To come in! Downtown! Pony! Work your pitch!"

However, the band exceled in turning the rap/rock sound into an unusual mix of blasting anger, echo effects, and larger-than-life mixing sounds. The guitars grind ferociously. Moreno whispers with pent-up emotions bottled up, before yelling in his strange, otherworldly dialect.

The single on this album which broke the band onto mainstream radio was a song of abstract symbols, "Change (in the House of Flies)." The band makes their message simple and clear, as Moreno whispers, "I took you home/Set you on the glass/I pulled off your wings/Then I laughed." It's a song about getting the rug pulled out from underneath you. The quiet mood is broken when Moreno yells "I watched the change in you!" while Stephen Carpenter blasts guitar chords to a smashing drum beat by Abe Cunningham.

However, the song that made The Deftones immensely popular was the hit single, "Back to School (Mini Maggit)." It's disputably one of the greatest rap/rock songs of the 2000s, before disco punk took all over. The song is a chaotic blend of industrial-sounding drums, growling electric guitars and killer rap vocals.

And when one thinks that this song is about how school sucks, Moreno then rips some thoughtful rhymes about the importance of school. He attacks like a murderer on the mic, yelling, "You just can't go on, rockin' the clothes, copyin the stance/Cause really is everything that you're not!"

The Deftones whole-heartedly changed the face of hip-hop-styled rock by mixing in echos, low-fidelity vocal effects and unconventional guitar grinds. Sure, the sound would change entirely after bands such as Arcade Fire and Death Cab for Cutie took the stage, but back in 2000, the Deftones were the defining band to beat.
