Free Music Notes for White PonyFree Music Review: The album that changed my life Hit: 5 Stars
I remember the time when this album came out. It was the summer of 2000, and I was ready to give up on rock as it was. The sound of nu metal, once promising, was going down the mainstream drain, when the genre torch was handed to people like Fred Durst; it seemed for me at the time that the only hope was Deftones. This band from Sacramento was never my first choice when it came to rock. I always thought that Around the fur was an album with a lot of the right elements, but it was focused on one, heavyness. Nevertheless, "Be quiet and drive" is one of their best songs, "if only their next album would be more like this", I thought. The day before White Pony came out, I was really excited, I couldn't wait, for me it was like, "Either Deftones save rock, or I'm moving on", it was that crucial. I didn't even wanted to listen to their first single. The day came, I bought it, put it on my car stereo, "Feiticeira" started, I thought, "still heavy, still Deftones", but then the magic started, "Digital Bath"", my jaw dropped, the clock stop, I wanted everybody to listen to this song. I played it again. "Which one is the single?" I tought. "Change in the house of flies", played it, I almost cried. And from there it was just pure genius. "Street Carp.", "RX Queen", "Teenager", "Knife Party", and "Passenger", oh my god, with Keenan; at that point, they did not needed anybody but them on that record.
White Pony defined my taste in music, my lifestyle, they way I approached music, etc. I remember I was talking to a friend about starting a band two weeks before White Pony came out, and after listening to it, I called him right away and started writing music and lyrics, he was a fan too, and he was as inspired as I was.
Deftones raised the bar pretty high on this album, so it was no surprise to me when they decided to went back to their heavy roots on their follow up and Chino started wrapping up his side project Team Sleep's debut. I don't know if they ever will or will try to top White Pony, but I know is going to be freaking hard.
Free Music Review: Their brilliant third album Hit: 5 Stars
This album is nearly perfect. It's so good, in fact, that even the weak moments are interesting. So let's get those two weak moments out of the way. First, this album was re-issued about 6 months after its initial release with the first track (Back to School) added. Back to School is a rap/rock version of the (superior) final track. It works, in a way, because the tempo change and new lyrics emphasize the strengths of both songs. But it's also a cynical marketing plan that needlessly tested the patience of fans --- they already bought The White Pony the week it came out, so the re-release makes them buy it again for just one (not so) new song.Second, this album is a little too long. Almost every listener will find one song that doesn't quite work. For me, it's Passenger, a duet with Tool's Maynard James Keenan. It should be amazing, but it's a little flat and uninspired. Other listeners will want to axe Teenager (very different from the rest of the CD), or Elite (which is packed with screams, a pure heavy metal track). (Personally, Elite is one of the best hardcore songs I've ever heard. It's so thick, it almost sounds like funk.) With those exceptions, this is a flawless album. The Deftones picked up where Jane's Addiction left off, comfortably working in the "art metal" genre without apology. In fact, these guys probably couldn't do it any other way --- they're too talented to be squished into the rap/rock straightjacket. Chino Moreno is best known for screaming like a lunatic, but if you pay attention, you'll notice that he spends most of the album whispering and singing beautifully. He's in the same league as Mike Patton, using his voice in unpredictable ways, adding drama to every song. If you only have room for one Deftones album, make it this one. It's full of brilliant songwriting, veering back and forth between all-out noise and introspective beauty. I bought it over a year ago and it still sits close to my CD player, ready to go four or five times a week.
Free Music Review: Yea... Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, I must ask why alot of the people who reviewed this album said the lyrics were evil. The only thing I've ever noticed is that the lyrics are cryptic if anything. I guess everyone has their own definition of "evil". Cannibal Corpse's lyrics are evil, pansies. Anywho, this is a great album as we all know. I really can't pick a favorite Deftones album. Chino has the greatest voice I've ever heard.Back To School 8/10 - This song is pretty catchy. I didn't like it at first because it has "rap" parts but it grew on me. Feiticeira 9/10 - I remember that this was one of the first songs that i liked from this album. Someone said the lyrics are meaningless, I guess some people can't interpret them. The lyrics paint a nice portrait in my head. Digital Bath 9/10 - Excellent song. Would have given it a 10 but I think it drags on a bit too long at the end. Elite 10/10 - Great song. I think watching them rehearse this on the cd extra feature is what made me instantly love this. rx queen 10/10 - sweet song, great lyrics. street carp 6/10 - the chorus kinda sucks. good riffs though. teenager 8/10 - nice song, different. knife prty 9/10 - great song, would be better if they didnt have some lady howling in the background reminding me of Pink Floyd. Korea 10/10 - This song should have been a single. It's my favorite song on the album. Awesome lyrics, awesome riffs, awesome vocals. Put together very nicely. Passenger 7/10 - Exceptional song but I think Maynard is overated, ooh, i can sense everyone getting mad about that last comment, who cares, he is. I usually skip this track. Change 9/10 - This song rocks, the ending goes on and on though. Gets to be too repetitive. Pink Maggot 11/10 - I know i said Korea was my fave song but this one may be my fave, maybe it's a tie. This is one of the best closers to an album ever. This song can send chills down your spine the first few times you listen to it, it's just a spectacular song.

The first Deftones song I ever heard was Hexagram of the self title. I remember when I first heard those melodic, brutal notes I knew I was going to fall in love with this band. I loved 2003's "Deftones", but I knew all the rage for Deftones was "White Pony". I had to get it. I finally bought it almost 5 years late, but never too late right? Anyway, I gave it a spin, I almost cried. The second "Fieticaria" broke in, I loved it, and the rest as they came. "Digital Bath", I almost died. "Elite", heviest Deftones song EVER! "RX Queen", dark, amazing. "Street Carp", riffy, heavy and catchy. "Teenager", calm, beautiful. "Knife Prty", no other song can touch it. "Korea", brutal, catchy. "Passenger, incerdible, Now way! Keenan comes in on this one!! "Change(In the house of flies), the single, and a great one at that! "Pink Maggit", dark, creepy. Perfect way to close this amazing album. This was the first time that every song on the album had no complaints. I love this CD. I listen to it all the time. I cant stop listening to it! And to that kid who wrote, "Its the singer", I think you need to shut up! The singers name is Chino, aka, the best there is. Oh, cant take a little creativity with a guys voice? And cant take it when a guy doesnt sing about breaking up with his girlfriend and starts singing poetry? Sorry dude but never diss Chino. Or Deftones. Its not Nu-Metal!! And its not Korn!! Everyone- stop comparing them to Korn. Everyone of there albums is awesome, even Adrenaline, but White Pony is untouchable. Do yourself a favor and buy this album!!! Im also upset about how everyone is hatin on the self title. What the heck? Of course its not White Pony! Nothing is. "Deftones" is a fine album. But again, White Pony is the "god" of metal albums. I'd say Deftones are the best metal act to walk the planet. Ugh,I keep calling them Metal. There not! They're nothing anyone has ever heard!! Oh man, JUST BUY THIS ALBUM!!! And prepare to be amazed.
Free Music Review: A High Rank in My Metal Hall of Fame Hit: 5 Stars
The Deftones emerged among a midst of bands who were trying to accomplish what they did, but couldn't capture the same intensity; the right measurements of anger and elation, when mixed together create a very pleasing entrée. The White Pony on this album is like one of the icons of my early college years. I revisit this CD often, and each time I get some sort of new perspective on it.
White Pony has violent moments, like "Korea," where the pounding guitar and pouring lyrics jump from the song and take us on an invigorating journey. Unlike many hard-edge vocalists, Chino Moreno manages to make his heavy saturation evocative, not annoying. My other favorite moments of the album occur with "Knife Party," where screeching never sounded so good; "Digital Bath," which builds into a magical, euphoric force; the follow-up "Elite," with screaming, drowning vocals that literally sound underwater (an interesting pass to "Digital Bath!") and "Change," which brings upon the mood of a dark, contorted fairy tale. The guitar work on White Pony isn't anything fancy, but I don't feel like it's due to a lack of or downplay of talent--it happens to sound good this way. It's filled with tunes that don't just stick in your head for a day--they stay forever. It has a psychedelic resonance. If you're in a crowded room and this album is on, you may have a hard some conversing because you want to get lost in the music that's pulling you into its black, delicious hole. Although transitions between songs are less than buttery, it makes sense in the context of the album, because thematically it fits together like a puzzle. The songs are not autobiographical, but rather represent emotions and experiences of others. "Back to School," for instance, isn't a typical I-was-a-misfit-in-high-school song--it's more of a parody of revisiting sour memories. I'm seduced by this album the same way I initially was five years ago.
