Free Music Notes for White PonyFree Music Review: The New Standard For Nu-Metal.... Hit: 5 Stars
This was my first deftones album. And what a album it is. Its easily their best and most refined work to date, and its truly a breathtaking album. Your appreciation for this album will increase if you see them perform any of these songs live. They put on a fantastic live show. Back to the album, this a new more mature deftones that wasn't found on Around the Fur or Adrenaline. While great albums, White Pony raises the bar and might be the greatest record they ever record. Its going to be hard to top this one.
In comparision to Deftones first two albums, White Pony is quite a departure from the Nu-Metal sound they had produced. While White Pony still hits you hard at certain parts, its not the same Deftones. A softer more mellow side of Deftones is expressed here, as the single, Change (in the house of flys) shows. Thats whats great about this album, it gives you alot of different stuff. You have hard, fast paced songs like Back To School, Elite and Korea, then you have songs that are a really much more mellow like Knife Party , Change, and Digital Bath. The rest of the album pretty much falls inbetween on the hard factor. The real highlight for me is Passenger, which includes Maynard (from Tool/APC) on it. Its a tremendous song. They both sing and harmonize so well, sometimes i have a hard time distinguishing who it is actualy singing. Fantastic song.
This album does take awhile to digest, at least for me. But most great albums do, and it has never really got old for me. This album should really be the standard for all Nu-Metal to be judged by. I can't think of anything else that surpasses White Pony in terms of genius. If you don't have this, just go buy it. No questions asked. An album this great doesnt come along very often, its one of the best albums I've heard in the last 6 years. Masterpiece on all accounts.
Free Music Review: Actually, almost 5 stars Hit: 5 Stars
This is without a doubt the best Deftones album. Catchy melodies, heavy guitar and deiversity. It's not perfect, but it's really close. Plus these guys don't really sound like anyone. Can you name a band that they sound like? Nor can I. I'd recommend Deftones to fans of nu metal or even rap metal. And this is the album to get if you don't own any. After this buy their self titled (skeleton cover) and Around the Fur. I didn't care for Adrenaline, but you might like it. Enough about their other stuff and on with the album. This version of their amazing cd has included the single "Back to School" so get this version of the cd. And now for my review of my favorite songs.
Back to School - Wasn't on the original release of White Pony and I'm happy it's on this one. Starts off soft then gets heavy. Rapping verse and a melodic chorus. 4.5/5
Digital Bath - Mostly a slow and mellow slow, with a nice melodic chorus. My 2nd favorite on the album. 5/5
Elite - Starts off loud and stays that way for most of the song. Nice song to rock out to. 4/5
RX Queen - The verses drag, but they lead to an amazing chorus. 4.5/5
Street Carp - The shortest song at 2:41 and one of the heaviest. My 3rd favorite. 5/5
Knife Prty - One of the better average songs on the album. Takes awhile for this song to start up, but it's good when it gets going. 4.5/5
Change - My favorite Deftones song of all time. I heard this somewhere on the internet and had to get the cd. Slow verses and such an inspiring chorus. 5/5
There is my review. Hopefully it changed your opinion about this album or made you want to get it. Remember to check out Around the Fur and the self titled if you liked this.
Free Music Review: A Pony of all colors Hit: 5 Stars
The Deftones are one of those bands that has become a victim of its own success (and fans). Too often, they're grouped in with the current wave of rap/metal bands polluting the airwaves and MTV. On the contrary, the only thing that the Deftones share in common with bands like Korn, Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit is their fanbase. "The White Pony" demonstrates why this band deserves a second look from critics and fans alike.Although this is really a rock album at heart, there is much diverstiy among the songs on this disc. "Elite" and "Street Carp" showcase the Deftones roots in hard rock, as both tracks are relatively straightforward and guitar-driven. On the other hand, there's the acoustic "Teenager" and drum loop-heavy "RX Queen". There are also more experimental tracks like "Passenger", which features Maynard James Keenan of Tool (another band that's often misjudged in critical circles) sharing vocal duties. This song and "The Boy's Republic" (a track that, unforunately, is only available on the limited-edition version of the album) are the two standouts on a disc with few low points. The rest of the album is populated with groovy, slower paced (yet still heavy) tracks like "Change", the first single from the disc. Most of these songs, if released by another band that was marketed differently, would probably appeal to many indie and college rock fans. In fact, despite my admittedly eclectic tastes, this is probably the album that's spent the most time in my cd player all summer. "The White Pony" serves as both a guilty pleasure for indie rock eletists and perhaps a gateway to better music for rap/metal fans. Definitely Recommended.
Free Music Review: They pulled themselves out of the NU-Metal hole and into a totally different direction... Hit: 5 Stars
...and you have to admit, they are an amazing band!
They started out during the whole NU-Metal days. Don't forget, their debut "Adrenaline" was infused with some rap/metal sounds, yet very aggressive and hard. But nevertheless, they started out as NU-Metal even though their sound was all together different than their NU-Metal bretheren(Korn, Coal Chamber, Sevendust, Limp Bizkit). From their earlier albums, it was easy to tell that they would go far.
Throughout each of their albums, you can hear them progress further and further out from NU-Metal and into a style all their own, a more perfected style. A raw, aggressive voyage that spills onto "The White Pony", which happens to be their last album where they feature any resemblence to their NU-Metal roots. On this album you can hear that resemblence washing away in a literal digital bath. With their DJ/sampler getting more playtime on their album, and forging a sound that borders on POST-Metal, the Deftones were able to pull themselves out of the NU-Metal rut and evolve their sound and perfect it. Most of "The White Pony" is sheer beauty, with a few tracks being sheer heavy monsters. A masterpiece I believe, and a cut above their previous two(Around the fur is still amazing though, Adrenaline is okay-its too under-developed and NU-Metalish). Tracks like "Digital Bath", "Teenager", "Knife-Party", "Elite", "Change(in the house of flies)" "Korea", Rx Queen" and even "Pink Maggot(later called by another name). Even "Passenger" featuring Maynard James Keenan from Tool is a very good song. The other tunes "Feiticeira", "Street Carp" are the only two songs that are only okay.
You can really notice the style change on this album. I highly recommend this album.
Free Music Review: my favorite metal cd Hit: 5 Stars
This is the album that got the Deftones away from their Korn comparasions. It is by far the best album the Deftones ever wrote, I liked Deftones-Deftones and the others but this was a lot better in my opinion. First of all, it contained some or the best vocals Chino's ever did, and the best guitar work by Stephen. You don't need 7 strings to be heavy, Elite and Korea proved that. The Deftones also brought a DJ/keyboardist to their band, adding new sounds and soundscapes.Back to School 5/5 sounds like old-school Deftones, and the cd would not be as good without it. Feticeria 5/5 this is one of my favorite Deftones songs, also contains some good lyrics about fantasizing about kidnapping. Digital Bath 100/100 one of my all time favorite songs, best performance Chino has ever done on vocals, best song as a band. If not for the new keyboardist, this song would not sound the same Elite 4/5 heaviest song the Deftones wrote, cool screaming with the distorted vocal RX Queen 4/5 cool sound they get with the guitar, creepy lyrics Street Carp 5/5 awesome song. Very heavy. Teenager 5/5 a new sound for the Deftones, acoustic guitar. Couldn't have sounded better. Also, brings the keyboards to the front. Knife Prty. 4/5 Great song, great lyrics, one og the best the Deftones ever did, but the high-pitched screaming gets to me a little after a while. Korea 5/5 KICK A-S SONG. the bridge is killer. Passenger 5/5 Maynard, Chino, singing the same song, 2 best vocalists in metal. How can it get any better than this? Change 5/5 not my choice for first single, (I would of gone with Korea) but great song none-the-less. Pink Maggit 5/5 great closer. I love how it goes to Back to School in the end.
