Free Music Notes for White PonyFree Music Review: "Chrome buttons and buckles and leather surfaces, these and other lucky witnesses..." Hit: 5 Stars
With the inclusion of `Mini Maggot', `White Pony' was re-released to the public a more complete album. It's not that `White Pony' wasn't near perfect already, it's just that any extra song that's `NOT' filler is always welcome. `Mini Maggot' starts off the album with a classic Deftones `rap/rock' feel, but it's with `Felticeira' to me that the album becomes it's own, giving us a new eerie mellow rock vibe that Deftones have since perfected.
Songs like `Digital Bath' (about committing suicide with a toaster in a bathtub...I'm not joking, Chino said this) and my personal favorite `Passenger' featuring Tool's very own Maynard prove to be some of the most intelligent tracks released in music today, lyrically and musically pushing the envelope and delivering another side of this band, a very welcome side.
Songs like the brilliant first single `House of Flies' and `Street Carp' serve up some awesome head banging catchy riffs and lyrics, while `Elite' proves that Deftones still have MAJOR edge. `Teenager' and the closer `Pink Maggot' are soft spoken and delicate, much different than anything we've heard from this band before, and they further go to show that The Deftones are the definitive band of our generation, probably the most influential and inspired bands to come along is a very long time.
Lyrically this album is fantastic, casting shadows and ambiguous thoughts around effortlessly. Just listen to `Passenger' (from which the title of my review is taken) or the brilliant `Knife Party' and tell me you're not spellbound! One of the greatest albums ever released, Chino and the boys never fail to impress me over and over again.
Free Music Review: A Masterpiece. Deftones' Best. Hit: 5 Stars
I am truly saddened that some people actually don't enjoy this album. This is by far the best Deftones album. Chino was meticulous about arranging his vocals on this album. There is little or no profanity on this album which is unlike previous Deftones records. Which I'm not against profanity at all, but it was nice to see less aggression and more subtlety. There is hit after hit, starting with the anthem Back to School (Mini Maggit) and ending with a follow up version of the song called Pink Maggit. Every song is wonderful and the lyrics prove that Chino can write deep meaningful lyrics contrary to his more aggressive writing style on Around the Fur and Adrenaline. Digital Bath is nearly the best song on the album, just beautifully dreadful. It's a song telling about killing your girlfriend by throwing an electrical appliance in a bath tub while she is bathing and killing her. RX Queen is my personal favorite because I dedicate it to my girlfriend(It's a mushy love song). Teenager and Change (in the house of flies) are both softer mood influenced songs. Passenger which Chino is joined with Maynard James Keenan ,the lead singer from Tool a.k.a. God, and they really go together well. I wouldnt really consider this a concept album, but this cd is better listened to from start to finish. If you ever see Deftones live in concert, they will probably perform at least 5 or 6 songs off this cd, so I would highly recommend this album to anyone. It's a good album to start off on if you are not familiar with the Deftones' style, since it's not overly aggressive and it's an easy cd to just listen to and relax. White Pony is definitely a five star cd. Well worth the price.
Free Music Review: The new millenium's best rock record! Hit: 5 Stars
With the Deftone's third album, White Pony, they set themselves apart from the posers, packaging their usual hammer heavy hardness with a newly attained level of dense, haunting, and textured rock and roll that can only be safely classified as "moody art rock." The moods swing from the demonic rage of "Elite" or "Korea," where front man Chino Moreno spends most of his time screeching in his now familiar roar, to flashes of Cure-style goth on "Digital Bath" and "Passenger," (which features guest vocals from Maynard James Keenan of Tool). There's even a ballad. The soft and thoughtful "Teenager" sounds like a lament of the carefree days of youth. Standout tracks include "Change (In the House of Flies)," "Passenger," and "Digital Bath," a song that, at it's core, refers to murder, but sounds almost sweet on the surface. This ambiguisness runs through the record on other tracks like "Knife Party" and "RX Queen." The new sound is softer than Adrenaline and Around The Fur, but provides the same emotion and intensity without missing a beat. The lovelorn heart of Moreno beats as that of a poet and on White Pony you will feel his sorrow in a swoon of multidirectional harmony and pain. The record is as complex in its message as it is musically layered. The Deftones have always scated the line between hard and heavy rock and roll and moody art rock. White Pony is the perfect product, a haunting and textured rock record that announces The Deftones as one of the most intelligent, playful, and critically acclaimed bands in the biz.
Free Music Review: Highlight of Deftones Career Hit: 5 Stars
This is the one; this is the Deftones release that really displayed what the band is capable of. This entire album is great from start all the way to finish. It was my second experience with the band almost a year after I had gotten "Around The Fur". At first I wasn't sure what to think because I did enjoy their last release but I didn't know anything from this album because they don't play them on the radio much. So I took the chance anyway and did the right thing. Each track is just so unique and artsy, I love it. It's also at my borderline of what I consider too hard because of the screaming. Chino's vocals blend so well with the music you don't even notice it and it doesn't get annoying like you would think. Probably my favorite tracks from the record are "Feiticeira", "Elite", "Passenger", and "Change". Anyway, here's what I think of everything else...
1. Back To School (Mini Maggit) - 9/10
2. Feiticeira - 10/10
3. Digital Bath - 9.5/10
4. Elite - 10/10
5. RX Queen - 10/10
6. Street Carp - 9.5/10
7. Teenager - 8/10
8. Knife Party - 9.5/10
9. Korea - 9/10
10. Passenger - 10/10
11. Change (In The House Of Flies) - 10/10
12. Pink Maggit - 9.5/10
Overall: 95% A-
I think this album just has so many awesome tracks. There aren't even any bad tracks on this record. Like on there last one there was 1 or 2 iffy tracks, but with this its just plain great. If you are a Filter fan or Tool fan you will probably enjoy this album. Especially if your a Tool fan because maynard makes his guest appearance on the track "Passenger".
Free Music Review: Very Good Aggro Hit: 5 Stars
Let me review the songs from this excellent aggro album. Each song will be rated out of 5 stars. You must buy this album if you haven't already. 1. Back To School (Mini Maggit)(5/5) Excellent song. One of those songs that you would listen to on the first day of school. The opposite of My Own Summer. 2. Feiticeira (4/5) Not one you can mosh to, but a pretty good song. 3. Digital Bath (5/5) Soft with some guitars, but an awesome song. 4. Elite (10/5) One of the best on the track! Chino just screams throughout the track. Definitely a mosh song, hands down. 5. RX Queen (3/5) I used to like this song but its not as good as it used to be. Almost the anti-love song 6. Street Carp (4/5) Pretty good song. Nothing real special 7. Teenager (4/5) All of the sudden we see a "ballad" (term used very loosely) with just Chino playing an acoustic guitar. A song any teenager could relate to. 8. Knife Prty (5/5) Great song. The lady screaming in the background intesifies this "creepy" song. 9. Korea (4/5) Nothing special, like Street Carp. 10. Passenger (5/5) Features Maynard James Keenan of Tool. Great song! 11. Change (In The House Of Flies)(4/5) The first single off of White Pony, but doesn't really show the real Deftones. 12. Pink Maggit (5/5) Third best track on the album. Don't let the fact that it's track time (7:26) scare you, this song really leads into Back To School, so Back To School should have been last.
