Free Music Review: The Deftones at their peak
Hit: 5 Stars

"Around the Fur" may be the Deftones' best album, but "White Pony" comes pretty close to that category. Unlike the previously mentioned album and their debut "Adrenaline", "White Pony" finds the band getting more melodic with their sound while still maintaining a heavy edge. Less rap/rock sounding than their previous releases and with slicker sounding production, "White Pony" is a treat for the ears. Standout tracks include "Digital Bath", the Grammy winning "Elite", "Rx Queen", "Korea", "Teenager", "Pink Maggit", and the album's big highlight "Passenger" which features Deftones voice Chino Moreno singing with Tool/A Perfect Circle frontman Maynard James Keenan. That song is worth the price of admission alone, and is incredibly haunting. This is the re-released version of "White Pony" which includes an extra track entitled "Back to School (Mini Maggit)" which is pretty much the same as "Pink Maggit" albeit a bit more rap/rock flavored and fast paced. All in all, consider this essential listening, even if your not a hardcore Deftones fan.

Deftones- " White Pony"

I remember it was in 2000 that I was on my way home from working construction and the radio was on. The DJ gave a little intro and then played Change. I remember being floored and getting goose bumps . I didn't want the song to end it was so addicting.
I bought the cd a little later . Then I saw them in Pheonix Az at The Celibrity Theater. THE BEST CONCERT I'VE EVER SEEN. Chino was all over the place. When we got there all the good places were taken so I was like this sucks, but then Chino came up the railing and sang 2 or 3 songs right infront of us and. He was right there giving everyone high 5's and connecting with the crowd. Life Changing for sure. My buddy Matt was patting him on the back and kick'n it right next to Him. When I say close, I mean like right in front of our faces. It was crazy.
Well sorry for giving a huge story there. On to the review:

Back to school 5/5 :awesome song, they purpose went for the whole high school thing as a poke fun at those kind of bands that try to stratigically sell to the nerds and " picked on Kids".

Just buy the CD.

Free Music Review: Melodic, morose, rivetting
Hit: 5 Stars

The White Pony is an essential album. Complex and rhythmic, deeply disturbing, and enchantingly melodic.

Initially, the album disturbs and almost irritates. The beats are not quite right (are they?), the tempo is not like others (what tempo?), the sway and mood is off-kilter (it is?), and the rhythm takes getting used to (it does?). Then you sink into it, and you're surrounded.

Pony's highlight is its moroseness. The album, taken as a whole, has the character of producing a thoughtful ambience, punctured by trepidation and hesitancy. You're in the thick of it.

There is a story in the album, of this I'm sure, but what overwhelms me is the confusion and incoherence that doesn't manage to frustrate. Instead, you can't help but enjoy the confusion of lyrics that make sense only in retrospect, and the Deftones' particular manner of producing, layering, and structuring sound (and it is particular).

Of note is the song with Tool frontman Keenan, a track that immediately compels and enchants but, even after a few listens, does not lose its appeal.

This album is stunning, but requires more than a superficial listen. Recommended.

Free Music Review: underrated
Hit: 5 Stars

Deftones are not the easiest band to like, I say this beacause every Deftones album I've ever picked up, I never really liked at first listen, especially this album. I was so used to their older sound so I was really confused when I listened to the whole album, but the more and more I listened to it, the more I liked it. They are pioneers to this genre of music as wu-tang clan was to rap. I wouldn't say everbody was trying to copy them (in earlier years) but most nu-metal bands were definetly influenced. Now with the WHITE PONY release they stand alone with their own unique sound. I'm not saying they aren't influenced because you can hear a weezer/tool/depeche mode slash this and that influence, but thats what makes this band so great. With songs like passenger,(which should've gotten some radio air play) pink maggit, change, rx queen, well pretty much whole album is good, one thing I was really dissapointed with is that should've kept "the boys republic" on this album and shyed away from "mini maggit" other than that this is one of the best albums that came out in 2000. It's definetly worth buying.

Free Music Review: First Deftones CD for me
Hit: 5 Stars

I am very impressed by the Deftones. This album is great. First off, I'll tell you about the band. Chino Moreno (vocals/guitar) is an incredible singer. His scream is freakin' scary, and he can sing very very well. Just check out "Digital Bath" (my favorite track) and "Teenager", and you'll know what I mean. Abe Cunningham's drums are great and he's a very complex drummer. Chi Cheng's bass is well heard most of the time, and he's a great bassist. Frank Delgado's turntables aren't really heard much on this album (maybe it's just me), plus he's new on this album. Finally, the master, Stephen Carpenter. Stephen's guitar style is very unique and heavy. He mixes thundering riffs with beautiful melodies. He really shines on tracks like "Digital Bath", "Change", and "Knife Prty", an also on "Teenager" if that really is a guitar (is it a keyboard or the guitar making the music?). Deftones sound like heavier Tool, I think. This is an incredible album, certainly a must-buy. Check out songs 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10 (an AWESOME song w/ Maynard), 11, and 12.
