Free Music Notes for Mistaken IdentityFree Music Review: No need to Mistake the Identity of this album. Hit: 5 Stars
With Innocent Eyes, Delta Goodrem, a beautiful, talented young Australian singer, delivered to the world one of the best pop albums in living memory, complete with five number 1 singles and not a filler track in sight. Suffice to say, she had her work cut out for her in bringing her sophomore album up to the level of the original, and after a tough year battling cancer and very public failed relationships, I am ecstatic to say that Delta has returned with an album that surpasses its predecessor in every way imaginable.
The lyrics are more mature and the mood of the album is much darker than IE. Much credit must go to her though for avoiding turning MI into a "woe is me" album, which would have been all too easy. She has branched out into more areas here, bringing us jazzy tunes such as 'Miscommunication', quirky numbers like 'Mistaken Identity', soaring orchestral tracks as in 'Sanctuary' and even some rather powerful theatricals in 'Nobody Listened'. On top of this there's a good array of powerful piano-driven ballads such as 'Be Strong' and 'Fragile' and some rockier pieces of which 'Electric Strom' is the standout. The following is a trck by track rundown of the album.
1. OUT OF THE BLUE - The first single off the album spent 3 straight weeks at number one in oz and is tear-inducing in it's beautiful storytelling of Delta's recovery from cancer and how she met her lover 'out of the blue'. This song takes surprising twists and turns, switching between sweet piano moments then hitting us with layers of sound in the chorus, all perectly ballanced here and Delta's vocals are above excellent. 9.5/10
2. THE ANALYST - wonderful auto-biographical track written in third person talking about how she always over-analyses everything. The 'Doctor Who'-like opening music is particularly notable. 8/10
3. MISTAKEN IDENTITY - The title track is certainly a highlight on a brilliant CD. It is hard to classify as it is very jazzy and quirky, even Tori Amos-like in flavour. The lyrics are top notch, the tune carries you along like no other, and I love the way it ends with Delta rambling off. It's easy to see why it's Delta's favourite on the CD. 10/10
4. EXTROARDINARY DAY - This song more than any other focuses on her cancer struggle, documenting the day she found out the news that she had Hodgkinson's disease. This song is very dark and haunting and truly fantastic all round. 8.5/10
5. A LITTLE TOO LATE - Very similar to 'Throw It Away', my favourite track on IE, with its breezy guitar chords at the beginning and throughout, as well as the distinct sound of the backing vocals and the mid-tempo pace. So naturally it is one of my favourites on MI. This song is just so fun, and like 'Throw It Away', breaks up a very overwhelming and dark album wonderfully. 10/10
6. BE STRONG - The most powerful ballad on the CD, was written by Delta for her friend Belinda Emmet, who was also suffering from cancer, basically saying "I know how you feel, just hang on and be strong". Moving, with great piano music and perfectly sung, this track is another album highlight. 10/10
7. ELECTRIC STORM - As far as I'm concerned, this is probably the best song Delta has ever recorded. It is so powerful and elecrtifying to listen to, that listening to it feels like nothing short of being caught up in an electric storm. The electric guitars here make this song reminiscent of 'Predictable', one of the best songs on IE, and the vocals here are beyond perfect. 11/10!!!
8. ALMOST HERE - A great, touching duet sung by Delta and ex-Westlife singer Brian McFadden. The chorus is powerful and the two voices suit perfectly. 8/10
9. MISCOMMUNICATION - Possibly the most unusual song Delta has yet sung. This song definately belongs to older era with its jazzy/cabaret feel, you could imagine this being sung in a musical. Delightful in its uniqueness. 9/10
10. SANCTUARY - This song throws up walls of orchestral sounds towards the end making it a memorable listen. The vocals are very strong here, and the lyrics are simple but effective. 8/10
11. LAST NIGHT ON EARTH - Powerful thanks to its haunting piano intro, and the sheer emotion Delta invests in the chorus. A fan favourite, and one of the more catchy and poppy tunes on the album, this song is however never corny and always sincere and beautiful. 9/10
12. FRAGILE - Reminiscent of 'Will You Fall For Me' on IE due to its simplistic piano-and-Delta alone makeup. I am pleased a song like this is on here as it utilises Delta's talent to the greatest extent and the lyrics here are most impressive. 8/10
13. DISORIENTATED - A truly crazy song that certainly leaves you feeling disorientated by the end. Delta rambles on about the rising moon and clocks ticking backwards and it's all great fun. Most significant here is the great music box-like backing vocals. 9.5/10
14. YOU ARE MY ROCK - One of the best ballads Delta has recorded. Dedicated to her brother Trent, it is not as simplistic as 'Fragile' nor as overwhelming as 'Be Strong', it is simple exquisite and understated. The last few lines are lovely and a perfect way to 'end' the album. 10/10
BONUS TRACK. NOBODY LISTENED - But wait! A few minutes after 'You Are My Rock' begins the most out-there tune Delta has sung. Venting all her sarcasm and rage on the listener, this rockier-edged tune takes you by surprise and knocks you for six. 9/10
In all, the wonderful thing about this CD is I simple do not have a least favourite song. Even IE went through weaker patches around the middle, not so MI. What's also great about it is that it truly feels like we as the listener are going on a journey through the past year of Delta's life as we listen to her music. And it is the way she draws you in like that and makes each of her CDs a real journey through a different stage of her life that sets her apart from almost everyone esle out there on the music scene and why her fans adore her and feel closer to her than any other singer's fans ever could. I for one am eagerly anticipating the next stage in Delta's incredible musical journey...
10/10
