Free Music Notes for One Hundred Years From Now (Dig)Free Music Review: Best "Styx" album since Paradise Theater Hit: 4 Stars
It feels like we were finally given the Album that Dennis promised during the reunion tour.
I try to forget Brave New World personally.
A lot to love about this work and can be listened to over and over. The first four songs really get this moving in the right direction....it will take you aback with the amount of guitar work in it.....like Dennis was trying to send a message that he has a harder side too.
if you liked pre Kilroy Styx you will really appreciate this album
BTW.....I wonder if Tommy or JY listened to this, looked over at Gowen and realized he would never even come close
Free Music Review: Surprising Good Hit: 4 Stars
I rate this album 4-stars. This is a very good album. It is way better (and sounds alot more like Styx) than Cyclorama or A Brave New World. It is probably the best thing from any of the Styx guys in a long, long time. It isn't perfect, but it has some very good songs and Dennis Deyoung's voice is still exceptional.
The packaging sucks. The cardboard "green" crap. Please give me my jewel cases back! At least it doesn't just have a sleeve for the album like some new albums.
Free Music Review: Solid DDY effort Hit: 4 Stars
I always thought Dennis had the songs and the voice that made Styx who they are, but his solo albums were always weak (as compared to Tommy who's solo albums were always amazingly strong).
This CD shows a very good showing for Dennis. There is no smash hit here, the song you hear for the first time and go WOW, but there isnt any real lame somngs here either, what you get is a good smooth album, not great but no crappy...decent is the word.
Free Music Review: Very Styx Like CD Hit: 4 Stars
Dennis delivers a fantastic CD, strongest of his solo career. I believe it has a very Styx like sound - why? - beyond the obvious reasons, I hear a background singer on most of the tracks which sounds exactly like JY's high pitched wail. If you liked any of the classic Styx CDs, you'll like this one.
Free Music Review: Decent, but NOT Styx Hit: 3 Stars
I find the reviews lauding this CD as Dennis returning to "Grand Illusion" status LAUGHABLE.
This is definitely Dennis' best solo album. But it's nowhere near what the Styx albums were and for my money takes a back seat to Styx's (sans Dennis) album "Cyclorama".
There are some extremely good songs here:
-100 Years From Now- The solo Dennis version is much better than the French guy's version
-Private Jones
-Crossing the Rubicon
-This Time Next Year
-Turn Off CNN
These are really good tracks and most of them rock. Some great guitar playing here as well.
There are some 'okay' tracks
-Rain- could've done without the dated synth lick
-I Don't Believe In Anything- Decent song, but the lyrics sound like something my gramma would say "that Internet scares me...."
-Save Me
There are some HORRIBLE tracks here:
-I Believe In You- ruined by dopey background vocals. Sounds like a spoof from "Red Dwarf".
-There Was a Time
-Breathe Again (which rips off part of Prelude 12 for it's opening bit)- This song sounds like a really bad Partridge Family track. It's terrible in it's cheesiness. Just really terrible. I can't believe Dennis produced this track.
Dennis' voice is in great form. Sounds wonderful. But some of the production and writing choices DeYoung made on this album are just not good. It definitely doesn't sound like "Grand Illusion" era stuff, though there are glimpses of that.
To those expecting this to sound like 1977 or even 1983- it doesn't. There are echoes of that stuff, but there are also left turns into things that wrecked his other solo album tracks. Just too corny and dated.
Glad I bought it, but I think people are so glad to see DeYoung back with ANYTHING that they're giving more credit to the album than they should.
