Free Music Notes for Sounds of the Universe Deluxe Box Set (3 CDs/DVD/2 Books)

Free Music Review: 4 star CD in a 5 star package
Hit: 5 Stars

In my review of the single disc edition I said that this is the best album that a fan could reasonably hope for from DM in 2009.
That said, the deluxe edition is beyond what any fan could have reasonably hoped for.
Pricey? Yes.
Worth it? Absolutely.
The extra CDs are great, my complaint against the 2 disc catalog reissues was that I could not readily listen to the bonus tracks in my car, so having the extras on CD here is nice. The demo disc is quite nice too, more demos are apparently forthcoming.
The DVD extras are all top notch. It is refreshing to see the lads enjoying themselves so much in the studio live tracks.
The books are beautiful (I must admit, I had some real concerns about them when this was announced...no more)
The other bits are nice, very reminiscent of the "A Question Of Lust" cassingle special edition I bought over 20 years ago.
If you are a fan, get this now, before you kick yourself when they've gone really pricey.

Free Music Review: A box of joy
Hit: 5 Stars

I had the box set on pre-order for over a month and was greatly anticipating its arrival. Having been a huge DM fan from the beginning, attending 8 previous concerts, let's just say I had high expectations. Well, my expectations were exceeded! The SOTU album is awesome, in my opinion their best recording ever. The sub-bass is killer with some of the best mastering I've ever heard. Although less than a week in my hands, it is already a DM classic in my mind. Regarding the box set...very nice! The extra music is awesome and the DVD is truly fun to watch. You really get a sense of what the guys are personally like, something I've never really had any exposure to. Of course they are all extremely cool, and it was great to see their music creation process and interaction in the studio. The books/cards/pins are all very high quality keepsakes I'm proud to own.

I have tickets to see DM live here in Las Vegas this coming August...I'll be counting the days!

Free Music Review: great for true depeche mode fans
Hit: 5 Stars

now that i have attended the touring of the universe concert, i have a new appreciation for this album. it's not a traditional depeche mode album, but that's what makes this band so interesting, their constant evolution of sound and lyrics. the opener for the tour, "in chains" is also the first song on the album, and it sounds absolutely great live. i've also come to appreciate fragile tension, in sympathy (only played live a few times on the tour unfortunately), come back & wrong(great live songs). corrupt is a darker track and a terrific way to end the playlist. for those that buy the deluxe edition, some of the best tracks are on the deluxe box set, ghost, light, and oh well are all very good tracks and more "classic" depeche mode sounding. a true collector's item with all the great music and extras included in this set.

Free Music Review: A MUST for any Depeche Mode fan!
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a long time devoted Depeche Mode fan. So I purchased this box set initially out of respect for Depeche and their creativity. But I was really impressed by how much content I discovered on CDs and DVDs. Also, in case you haven't heard, this album doesn't sound as well in mp3 format due to high complexity of the sound effects. So having all these extra songs in CD quality helps me enjoy them much more. Books and pictures included are very nice. Anton Corbijn took the photos for the book and they really remind me of 80s and 90s music videos Anton filmed for Depeche. If you've seen short films Strange and Strange Too, you'll know what I'm talking about. To summarize: usually I don't see a lot of value in collector's box sets, but this one really stands out! If you love DM, please buy it, you won't be sorry.

Free Music Review: Good box set
Hit: 5 Stars

I wish they had box sets like this when I was a kid! Very well put together. The surround mix is great, the bonus tracks are great (and I don't have to buy the singles, I hope!). The remixes are a little lack-luster and uninspired. The demos are all stripped down, but not as different as I was hoping... I guess I was hoping for them to sound quite different, and maybe even a couple with Martin on his acoustic guitar or something. They're still kind of cool because you get to hear Martin sing songs you haven't heard him sing before. The books are good quality, but I wish there was more content... like actual written content. The pictures are great though. Overall it's a great box set and worth the price (I got it at Amazon's sale price). This is NOT for a casual or sometimes fan.
