Free Music Notes for Sounds of the Universe Deluxe Box Set (3 CDs/DVD/2 Books)Free Music Review: Sounds of the Universe strengthened by added content Hit: 4 Stars
Another Solid Depeche Mode album, flanked by good additional content. Not sure if I will ever wear the pins or put up a trifold poster in my room, let alone send postcards that are all included in the package. To the music: an unusually rich amount of unreleased stuff and bonuses makes this box-set the ultimate Depeche Mode collector's/fan's treat. The first CD contains the same content as the regular release and is a strong album, retro-sounding thanks to engineering of sounds. Martin's songs hold up best. Dave's pen and melodies disappoint somewhat after some strong showing on Playing the Angel and Paper Monsters which flattens the album overall. Notwithstanding, it is nice to see Depeche Mode and Martin's lyrics back in force with Biblical allusions and S&M twists.
The bonus material is solid through and through. Firstly, the Demo-tracks, particularly from previous albums are intriguing, nostalgic and although a bit crude, a piece of Depeche Mode history that the hard-bit fan will not want to miss. Secondly, the fresh tracks that did not make the album are a strong compilation and frankly, interchangeable with the some of the lesser tracks on the original album (such as Gahan's 'Come Back'). Intriguingly, we have the first Gore/Gahan joint track ever released which is surprisingly robust. Finally, the DVD with 5.1 Dolby album and documentaries and videos is fine icing on the cake with probably the most complete, candid illustration of the album-making process. The interviews reveal some of the bands current thoughts and future ambitions. The documentaries are a rare insight into Depeche Mode and the producer had intertwined clips from Black Celebration album recording which is very enjoyable.
Good show, DM! (BTW-what does Fletch do?)
Free Music Review: A great gift for any Depeche Mode fan Hit: 4 Stars
The contents of the box and their quality is excellent....maybe even somewhat overboard. However, if you are looking for a special gift for anyone who loves Depeche Mode this would make an excellent choice. Keep it sealed or in pristine condition and it will probably be a collector's item one day.
I enjoy the selection of songs, but quite frankly I can't see this group ever topping Violator and, in my opinion, the songs in this set don't even come close. I ended up ripping the songs I like best (about seven) and putting them on a separate CD.
I bought this in a "knee-jerk" purchase decision off of a Gold Box Deal with the clock on the offer ticking after I had had a bit too much wine, and if I had it to do over again I would have just gone the route of buying the DVD/CDs on their own for a third the cost instead of the Deluxe Box Set. I don't really need nor care to own the books, poster, pins, etc. but I did decide to buy and do have them, so c'est la vie. For someone wanting all of these add-ons, though, I think it is worth the price and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you get. Again, great idea for that special gift.
I give it four stars out of five, taking one star off simply due to the fact that none of the songs really blew me away like quite a few of the ones off the Violator CD did. Neverthelss, great group, great collector's item.
Free Music Review: Silly Packaging - Good Music Hit: 4 Stars
I don't know about you, but I like storing my CD's and DVD's in the usual jewel box not a big 10x10 box that won't even fit on my shelves. Then they give you a flimsy cardboard disc cover with printing colors you can not read. It is even difficult to determine which disc is which. I don't know about you, but I am over 60 and don't need the other nonsense packaged with the disc.
The big box will be tossed out and I will find jewel boxes and print what is inside, but it's too bad to talk about this when the music is the main point. I like the music very much but have to redo the packaging - pretty silly, Have we not outgrown this Europe thing? I hope so.
Free Music Review: A must have for true fans Hit: 4 Stars
If you're a big fan, you have to buy this. There's no way around it. The books and all the extras on the 4 DVDs are more than enough. The only flaw is that the printing could've been of a higher quality, just as the "diploma" you get in the box. It somehow makes it look rushed. But in the end, it's still worth collecting.
Free Music Review: grate!! on time!!! Hit: 4 Stars
Excellent disc, the content is wonderful, do not stop listening to it, I recommend them to him.
