Free Music Notes for Songlines

Free Music Review: More of the same
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the Derek Trucks Band fifth studio album. It is 60 minutes long and the sound quality is excellent. It has beautiful, deep, rich sound.

This is a collection of great blues/rock/jazz tunes. This one is more blues/rock oriented than previous albums. It also has a little more funk. It isn't as heavy on the blues as Soul Seranade. Joyful Noise has more variety in music style than Songlines.

About the only downside of this CD is that there are no surprises. There are no bad songs, and most are great. But, sometime, it is all going to get stale if the band doesn't try something new (like they did with Joyful Noise).

The other downside is that many of these tunes were already available on the double CD set called Live at Georgia Theater. Although, I like to see that Trucks is old school and tests out material on the road, before recording it in the studio. This is what the greats do, like Santana or Pink Floyd. Many of the recent bad studio albums from jam bands, like String Cheese Incident, Moe or Dave Matthews, are the result of going directly to the studio with new songs and letting some producer dictate how they are played, instead of experiementing with them on the road to come up with the best arrangements.

In spite of this CD being "more of the same" and having already heard most of the songs, I still think this is an excellent album and worth buying, even if you already have Live at Georgia Theater.

Note: if you have trouble finding Live at Georgia Theater, you can get it directly from Sony.

Free Music Review: Not a "guitarist album" but an incredible, well-rounded release
Hit: 5 Stars

The Derek Trucks Band has been continuing to evolve a lot in recent years, releasing songs that cover the gamut in style. Much like their last two albums, this one covers a broad range of music, making it hard to pin this band down in any genre. For the most part, the previous albums have been Derek Trucks (oh yeah, with a band) albums (especially the first two - Derek Trucks Band and Out of the Madness). Since he's an absolutely phenomenal guitarist, that was never seen as a bad thing. Songlines, however, showcases Derek considerably less, letting the whole band strut their stuff, especially their "new" lead singer, Mike Mattison, who has an incredibly emotive voice and amazing range (I say "new" in quotes because he's been with the band for a number of years, but they hadn't recorded an album since he joined - their last album had long since been recorded when it was released). This is truly a Derek Trucks BAND album, and it's an excellent album at that. Although I miss the great guitar solos, everyone in the band is exceptional at what they do.

People who want to hear the masterful guitar solos that filled his first four albums might be a bit disappointed with this, but if they allow themselves to take the album in as a whole, they'll realize that this is up there with the best work this band has done.

Still, for a truly transcendent experience, go see this band live. The feeling and power of the music, like with most great bands, comes across much more powerfully when these guys are playing live, in front of an audience.

Free Music Review: Inspiring!!!!!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Derek Trucks is truely a incredible guitarist who is in his prime. His slide playing has been compared to such greats as Duane Allman. Songlines is by far his best album I think for any derek trucks fan. He blends alot of creativity in songlines and it is easy to see why not just he is so great but the band as well. Todd Smallie(bass), Yonrico Scott(drums, percussion), Kofi Burbridge(Keyboards), Mike Mattison(Vocals), Count M'Butu(Congas). The entire band comes from different parts of the world and blends their musical influences together to create something much stronger than any average band. Songlines will take you on a musical journey from the getgo. This entire album is strong. I have seen derek a couple of times and as of now he is right on top with the other greats (in his prime). He has a real passion for the guitar which is obvious, it shows how expanded he has gotten since his first debut album Derek Trucks. My personal favorites are Crow Jane, I Wish I Knew, Sailing On, and All I Do. Sahib Teri Bandi/Maki Madni is a strong jam that is not a lost jam. Derek keeps the focus on his band on songlines, not so much on guitar.... which shows how mature he is as a guitarist. Chevrolet is a strong song with dobro guitar supposly the guitar he plays on this song was supposedly owned by Bukka White a true slide legend. Inside this booklet their are pictures of the band, derek's son, and father. Just as it says in the back page of the booklet. Music (...) is a memory bank for finding one's way about the world. Im truely inspired. Highly Recommended!!

Free Music Review: Maturity at its best!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have been a fan of Derek Trucks for a little bit more than a year now and I can honestly say that with every album his playing has matured and improved. Being a guitarist myself, I must admit that I enjoy listening to tracks that show the best of a musician's guitar work, but they don't always have to be overpowered by guitar leads or be a 10 minute jam. What some guitarist fail to realize is that with this album Derek Trucks is not concerned about showing everyone how good he is. A lot of guitarist get a lot of criticism when they choose to make an album that invloves less guitar, but, you see, it's not about the guitar, it's about the music. Songlines offers songs that everyone can enjoy, especially those only able to retain no more than 4 minutes of music. The songs on Songlines are also much more soulful and better composed than songs on the band's past albums. Highlights of this album are I'll Find My Way (my favorite), I Wish I Knew, Revolution, Chevrolet and This Sky. Derek Trucks is an amazing guitar player and a virtuoso with the slide, and is known for being so perfect in the way he plays. This album highlights his guitar work as well, don't be fooled when people say otherwise. If you're interested in overall good music buy thios album. If you're more of a guitar driven album then buy this album but also check out some of Derek Truck's other albums, preferrably Live at Georgia Theatre.

Free Music Review: A Classic
Hit: 5 Stars

Simply put - 20 years from now musical critics will be pointing to this album as one of the great albums to come out in the early 21st Century. It is always refreshing to hear an artist let the creativity flow and break down musical barriers so they fuse into a musical gumbo that emerges better than all the ingredients that went into it. Perhaps most refreshing is that an artist had the courage to do it for the right reasons - for the love of music and not for commercial reasons. Yet perhaps the most refreshing aspect of Songlines is that it was an effort led by someone in their late 20's with a potential that right now seems unbounded.

In the end, every person who I know who is a casual music fan and oriented to FM classics who listened to it ended up raving about this CD. Which makes perfect sense to me - because there's something in this album for everyone;it's easy to listen to musicians who know their craft and are good at it; it's at once accessible and musically layered. Whether you're into soul, jazz, blues, gospel, or rock, you will very much enjoy this album if you are open to it and you, like the beautiful stew that mixes together to form Songlines, will emerge with your musically tastes and perspectives inexorably altered.

Simply put the best album of 2006 and one that someday will be cited as a classic.
