Free Music Notes for Layla and Other Assorted Love SongsFree Music Review: Absolutely in the top 5 greatest rock albums ever Hit: 5 StarsThe other reviewers gave some very good details and history of the album. I am 54 years old and I live and die for this album. My first love, my wife (and mother of 4 beautiful children who all love this record today) and I were dating in 1971, cruising on 35 cent per gallon gas in my '67 GTO to the beach (Jones Beach, L.I., NY). I can't add anything else, other than we were fanatical Allman Bros and Grateful Dead Fans at the time. This album is the best. Check out "Why Does Love Have to Be so Sad?". Duane Allman gives a fantastic straight lead guitar solo (NOT slide). You know it's Duane (if you're an Allman Bros fan), although the credits don't say so. He was harnessed mainly for his slide guitar prowess, although in this song, he really shows what a great guitarist he was. The original legend was that Eric Clapton saw the Allman Bros. playing at the Fillmore East in NYC in circa 1970 and went back stage to ask Duane if he would contribute to the Layla effort. Actually, Eric saw the Allman Bros. in Florida and went back stage and the rest is history. Derek and the Dominos was born! It doesn't get any better than this. "Any Day" is a guitar virtuoso classic too. PLEASE, listen to this album. Listen to the Allman Bros too. And by the way, check out Derek Trucks on slide guitar with the Allman Bros.. He is now, where Duane would have been had he not met his sad, untimely death in '71. Another album you will want to look out for is Clapton's Chicago Guitarfest. Derek is on that one too.
Free Music Review: Classic rock Hit: 5 StarsThis is one of the greatest rock albums ever recorded. What is amazing is that it was ever recorded at all. Look at the state of the musicians in the photos inside of the sleeve and you'll see a bunch of wrecked guys who look as they though were their just for a party (and they probably were). A lot of drugs and alcohol were being taken during this recording session. Sadly this has taken its toll on the musicians who played with Clapton on the album. For those who don't their rock history Jim Gordon (Drums) is in prison, Carl Radle (bass) died of a Kidney infection in 1980, Duane Allman (Guitar) died in a motorcyle crash in 1971. Only Bobby Whitlock survives apart from Clapton.
However the music is mesmerisingly good. I remember hearing the guitar intro to Layla on the radio a few times when I was quite young (10 or 11) and not knowing what is was, but was completely transfixed by it. Not many pieces of music have had such an effect on me. But don't think this is a one track album. Clapton wrote another classic for this album in 'Bell Bottom Blues' and there are inspired covers of famous blues standards like 'Key to the Highway' and 'Little Wing'.
Free Music Review: A guitar duet for the ages Hit: 5 StarsLayla and Other Assorted Love Songs has long been neglected as a full body of work. Focus has always been on the title cut, Layla, with its mythological connection and present-day love story. The piano solo and the guitar singing at the end of the song certainly stand alone and stand the test of time.
There's more gems on this album than that, though. The welcoming of fellow guitar legend Duane Allman into the studio set off some six-string fireworks that are rarely approaced.
"Bell Bottom Blues" was born on this album, as was "Why Does Love have To Be So Sad."
The Dominos form a tight, up-tempo rock group that puts a personal touch on "Nobody Knows You When You Are Down And Out" and Hendrix's "Little Wing."
It's a must-own for Clapton fans and guitar groupies alike. Slowhand himself has been tipping his hat to the session more recently, resurrecting a number of songs from the disc on his most recent tour.
Free Music Review: One of the most over-rated rock albums of all time Hit: 2 StarsDerek and the Dominoes were, of course, a one-album band for Eric Clapton and "guest" musicians. The title song and "Bell Bottom Blues" notwithstanding, the album is, in a word, B-O-R-I-N-G. While the virtuoso guitar soloing between Clapton and Allman may enthrall some, this album is guaranteed to otherwise put to sleep the vast majority of the listening public. This is definitely NOT an album to play while driving down the highway late at night. ZZZZZZZZZ.....
Free Music Review: One of the TEN BEST ALBUMS EVER RELEASED!! ....Bar NONE!!! Hit: 5 StarsOK, folks, very short and sweet, here...emphasis on "sweet!!!"...
Without doubt, and MILLIONS agree with me, this is one of the GREATEST albums ever made! Certainly on everyone's "10 BEST LIST"...guaranteed!
Clapton "ruled" then, as he also "rules" now!!! NEVER has there been another classic rock, jazz, and blues guitarist that can come close to touching this Great Great Master!!! ~operabruin
