Free Music Notes for Destiny FulfilledFree Music Review: Soulful with a youthful edge Hit: 5 Stars
It is obvious that these ladies went from Destiny's Child to Destiny's Women. For the first time, you can hear how beautiful each woman's individual voice is. Unlike albums past, the women are able to harmonize like nobody's business! Michelle's voice is the most disparate but she rarely seems out of place. The exception being her verse in "Soldier." Kelly's voice is astoundingly clear and beautiful. However, she is at her best when she's singing at a low voice. And then there's Beyonce. A woman with such amazing vocal range that I can never get tired of hearing her sing. Whether she's sassing it up in "Lose My Breathe" or melting your soul in "T-Shirt," Beyonce shows that she is a powerful songtress that cannot be touched. I am impressed to learn that Beyonce is a good producer as well. The vocal arrangements here are excellent. There haven't been that many great soothing R&B albums to come out in 2004, with Jill Scott's "Beautifully Human" the only exception. I must listen to at least some of the songs from the album on a daily basis. If you're in a downtrodden mood and need a pick-me-upper, this album is the trick!
My review of each song:
1. Lose My Breath: 8/10. The very first time I heard it I got out of my seat and started to jam to it. I knew that the girls were back with a bang. This is obviously the club-banger in the album. It takes you back to your high school days where the school marching bands were superstars. There are times when the drums feel a bit too overpowering. To really enjoy this song, you must get away from it for a while or it's just overkill.
2. Soldier: 8/10. Very hot all around. The chrous is addictive and you'll find yourself singing it out loud at any part of your day. Beware of singing the lyrics if you're in a corporate setting. These lyrics are too cool for the office, trust me. While some of the older listeners will complain about the lyrics being too "ghetto," it reminds us that these are still young women who are not always serious. This track is certainly hot enough to be a club-banger. The album version is a lot better than the radio version because of the simple fact that T.I has a second verse that's even better than the first one. The only reason I wouldn't give it a 10 is because Michelle's voice does not flatter this track. Other than that, HOT SONG!
3. Cater 2 U: 10/10. Stunning song with a beautiful message of love and adoration to the man in your life. Beyonce's adlibs in the beginning are witty and her verse is charming. She obviously has the sweeter verse in this song because Kelly's verse a bit more lacking. This song is one of those instances in which Michelle's bridge sounds so unique yet perfect at the same time. Any doubts about what rating this song should be is silenced by Beyonce as she belts it out at the end. When she proclaims that she doesn't care what her momma and daddy say, you can just feel this girl means business. Sang it girl!
4. T-Shirt: 20/10. Ok, it's impossible to give it that rating but that's how I feel about this song. It's simply that good. Be forewarned though, as this isnt' your little sister's Destiny's Child singing these lyrics. Beyonce's sexy intro feels so intimate that you almost feel like a voyeur listening in. This is a song that tells the tale of a woman who is alone while her man is out of town and the things she does to fill the void. Beyonce's verses espcially leave nothing to the imagination. My interest in this song is heightened by the fact that we all know who Beyonce dates in real life. It makes the song even more real, you know? As racy as Beyonce's verses are, Kelly's verses in the pre-chorus are damn near intoxicating. Both women sound very sexy and smooth. And just when you think you've been sung a beautiful lullaby and are ready for a sweet night's sleep, here comes Michelle's raspy presence to make this quietstorm complete.
5. Is She The Reason: 7.5/10. The first record produced by 9th Wonder seems a little uneven when you think about the lyrics. The beats are very reminicent of the Rocky theme and seems to be more fitting on a rap album. Still, the lyrics are sad and relatable. Beyonce gets the more fiesty "you screwed me over" lyrics while Kelly gets the sadder parts. Michelle doesn't sound too goo when she's sassing back to the man and it almost makes you want to cover your ears. The chorus is still addictive though and the song is nice enough to listen to over and over again.
6. Girl: 8/10. A nice ode to female friendships. Again, the beats don't sound like they match the lyrics too well. Based on what you hear when you first press play, you're expecting an delightful song about love in the afternoon. The lyrics are nonetheless encouraging, albiet a bit rehearsed. All three women do a good job with the vocals with no one really standing out above the rest.
7. Bad Habit: 7/10. This is strictly a Kelly song as she is the only one on the vocals. I really liked it the first few times I listened to it but you quickly get tired of hearing the same voice over and over again. It's pretty much the female version of Usher's "Burn." This song reminds me that while Kelly's voice has grown, it's too much to take for an entire album.
8. If: 10/10. The surprise track on the album. Very old-skool Supremes that you don't see in today's music. This is the record in which the women harmonize like they're not playin. It's very fun listening to this song trying to figure out who sings what line. It's amazing how beautiful they sound while they trade out lines and even words. So uplifting! Full of attitude - both quiet and with presence. Ladies, you'll be getting out of your seats for this one. If you haven't heard this song, then you MUST TAKE A LISTEN!
9. Free: 8/10. Seems like a quieter continuation to "If." At the beginning, Beyonce sounds like she has a small cold but it's not enough to take away from my enjoyment of this song. The only downside is that Kelly is scarcely heard on this record.
10. Through With Love: 10/10. FANTABULOUS RECORD! This is one of those songs just smell like a classic. The lyrics are superb, the beats are perfect. Beyonce starts it off with a sad attitude about love that turns into anger. Kelly doesn't make much of a distinct impact on this record. But when Michelle enters near the end, you just better watch out! All the anger is transformed into something even more magical: acceptance. The last part of the song is taken over by both Beyonce and Michelle. You will feel chills when you hear this song. I guarantee you!
11. Love: 9.5/10. Beautiful laid-back vibe to it. Heartwarming outlook on love and the lyrics reflect that. A must-listen when you're down and need a reason to smile. Beyonce's voice in the beginning is sultry. Michelle transports you back to old school grooves that you never knew she was capable of doing. Major contender for wedding song music!
Extras that should have been on the album:
Why You Acting: Fiesty. Sassy. A message to men that karma is biatch! The beats are great. Beyonce does her usual great work. Kelly makes you blush and say OK GIRL.
Game Over: There are no words to describe this song. Beautiful. Sexy. Endearing. Smooth. Sultry. Addictive and haunting. Kelly blesses us with her beautiful soft voice for only the third time on the albu and Michelle brings a much-welcomed uplifting verse near the end. But once again, Beyonce's lyrics and delivery steal the spotlight. And don't even get me started on her sexy little adlib. Go on girl. Tell us how good that man is.
Now that's a way to end a CD. The game may not be over but Destiny Fulfilled most certainly gives ample evidence to backup the notion that the ladies of Destiny's Child are some of the most talented voices in the business today. And of course with Beyonce as the main diva that leads the pack.
Destiny Fulfilled PosterInternational version features one bonus track, 'Game Over'. 12 tracks in total. Destiny Fulfilled showcases the signature vocal harmonies and distinctive solo voices of Beyonc?, Kelly and Michelle on 12 brand-new Destiny's Child tracks, each one pulsing with contemporary rhythms and unforgettable hooks, chronicling an emotional journey across the turbulent landscape of romance, from the exhilarating intoxication of falling in love through the heartbreak of loss to the growth and serenity of acceptance. With Beyonc? acting as one of the producers on each of the album's tracks, and songs co-written by all three of the group's members, Destiny Fulfilled is the most personal--and most hand's-on--record that Destiny's Child has ever recorded.Columbia. 2004. Some thought it would never happen, but after solo successes and a three-year hiatus the ladies of Destiny's Child have reunited for the eagerly-anticipated Destiny Fulfilled. The Houston-based trio of Kelly, Michelle and some girl named Beyonce follow up their mega successful Survivor with another album full of infectious dance grooves and melancholy tales of women done wrong. Lead single "Lose My Breath" is their first offering of the former. Backed by a kinetic marching band sample, they sing with an urgency that bolsters the Rodney Jerkins-produced track. Current single "Soldier" is more of the same. Featuring T.I. and Lil' Wayne, the song allows the trio to sing the praises of the kind of men they like. Despite this one-two uptempo punch, DC does do ballads. They go old-school on the moving "If." Michelle, who has several impressive solos throughout, and Beyonce trade lines about finding and holding on to love. However, on "Bad Habit" the trio goes for the paint-by-numbers woman finding her inner-strength theme. Other highlights include the 9th Wonder and Beyonce-produced "Girl" and the midtempo gem "Free." --Rashaun Hall
