Free Music Notes for SurvivorFree Music Review: By far their best album..... Hit: 5 Stars
...Meaning yes, it is way better than Destiny Fulfilled, which has only one truly worthwhile song. I've had this album for a while now, and I've referred to it in other reviews, so I thought it was finally time for me to review it. I don't know why so many people are addicted to 'The Writing's On The Wall'.....it's a good album, but....it's strictly for the hardcore R&B crowd (although not as much so as their debut), because there's a LOT of slow songs. I have to admit, yes, out of all their albums, this is the one most likely to appeal to the pop audience-and I'm part of that audience! But I know pop, and I can't call this straight-up pop, because it's not. There are some R&B jams as well. But this is by far their most upbeat-and just plain best-album.
INDEPENDENT WOMEN PART I- This is a rather good song, but I've really never loved it. It gets old after a while. It's catchy and has good lyrics, though. (4/5)
SURVIVOR- One of, if not the absolute, best on the album. Very catchy, infectious melody and lyrics. I love the message. But this is one where you either love it or hate it. A while back, I thought this was aimed towards an ex-lover of one of the girls, but I soon discovered it was an I-don't-need-you-after-all anthem directed at the estranged ex-members of DC, which I found a tad surprising. Anyways, I think the lyrics can work both ways. A very good song. (5/5)
BOOTYLICIOUS- Everyone seems to love this song.....I guess it's pretty good, but they have better. A nice funky, sassy tune. A fun song to dance to. A confidence anthem for the ladies, basically. (5/5)
NASTY GIRL- I like this one. And I like the message, too....I've met a few nasty girls myself. Some complain about the melody, which I suppose could be better, but I still think it's catchy. And yes, it is kind of ironic, because even before they wrote this song, DC had been known to wear skanky outfits themselves. Nowadays, I consider it downright hypocritical, because Beyonce dressed like a friggin streetwalker in a lot of her solo videos....and with the new sexplosive image they're trying to put out with their new album, they really shouldn't ever sing this song again, because they're well on their way to becoming what they're trashing in this track. (4/5)
FANCY- This one's pretty good too. I'm starting to notice, a lot of songs here are dissing the members' fellow females. Anyways, a catchy tune; but not fantastic. (4/5)
APPLE PIE A LA MODE- I like this one for some reason. Some won't, but let it grow on you. It's a nice, slow R&B jam. But it's still catchy and funky. The lyrics are cool. It's basically them comparing the guy they like to decadent sweets: chocolate-covered strawberries, and...apple pie a la mode! But it's not nearly as sugary as you'd think. Not fantastic, but it's okay. (3/5)
SEXY DADDY-......I really don't like this one. It is SO annoying. (2/5)
INDEPENDENT WOMEN PART II- Hmmm.....some people loathe this one, but I think it's a fun little track. It basically sounds like a remix, but the lyrics are different. It's almost worth listening to for the sole reason that they say different things. It's not as good as the original, but....it's interesting. (4/5)
HAPPY FACE- God, I LOVE this one!!! Some people find it annoying, well, if feel-good songs annoy you, go ahead and feel depressed, it ain't my problem!! This might be my favorite one here, I'm shocked it didn't become a hit. Stunning lyrics-it can really make you feel better about yourself, and yet the beat is still extremely catchy; beautifully upbeat. It's a very happy song, but it isn't plagued by excessive sugariness or gloss-it's just genuinely, modestly feel-good. If you're sad and you want to feel better, this really might help! (5/5)
EMOTION- Meh.....this one's kind of boring. Actually, it's really boring. Nice lyrics and beautiful vocals, but....the beat is awful. I can't get into it at all. It has a discomforting old-fashioned, it's-been-done feel. (2/5)
DANGEROUSLY IN LOVE- They seemed to put all the ballads at the end, which makes the album seem uneven and unbalanced. But, that's the case with most DC albums (and Beyonce's solo album, amusingly). Interesting lyrics-very similar to "Crazy In Love" along those lines, but the beat isn't NEARLY as addictive. I deem this one as skippable. (2/5)
BROWN EYES- The beginning seems kind of sugary, like I'm listening to a low-budget Mandy Moore album....and this is yet again a ballad. The lyrics are kind of childish, and I just...don't like this one. (2/5)
THE STORY OF BEAUTY- This song is very sad. And amusingly, it still has a mid-tempo beat and a catchy chorus. I like this one, but it isn't as good as some of the opening tracks. The lyrics have a lot to say-listen to them. Not as good as the other 4s here, but.......I'll give it that anyway. (4/5)
GOSPEL MEDLEY- I am almost ashamed to say this is the worst track here. I can't listen to it. Very religious; church-going fanatics may have some fun with it, but I always, ALWAYS skip this one. (0/5)
OUTRO (DC-3) THANK YOU- I think this track is really cool-the girls sing and rap their thank yous. I don't know why, but I like listening to it. A fun beat is playing in the background. It's interesting, listening to what they have to say. (3/5)
OVERALL SCORE: 49/75
No DC album has ever stunned me the whole way through (hmm....now that I think about it, no album period ever has ^^;), but this is still a very good listen-unlike Beyonce's solo album, which had a few ups at the very beginning and then went totally downhill, this stays moderately, consistently enjoyable the whole way through without getting too explosive or too terrible (although some songs are REAAAALLLY awesome and one is REAAAALLLY terrible). This is the best DC album, and I also think it is better than Beyonce's solo album. A highly recommended buy, even though it has minor flaws.
Survivor PosterDESTINYS CHILD Survivor (2001 US edition 15-track CD album from the foxy threesome of Beyonce Kelly and Michelle including the worldwide smash hits Bootylicious Independent Women and more sealed picture sleeve) One listen to the eagerly anticipated third CD from the world's biggest girl group and it's clear there is one child with the most destiny. To paraphrase the hip-hop legends, "Who's house?" Beyoncé's house, and with the lead vocalist producing or cowriting all of the 14 tracks, it's hard to imagine what those other two chicks even do (other than act grateful to still have a gig). Seizing creative control is a bold move for Miss Knowles, and anytime an R&B act eschews the beat of the week, they have to be commended. But the problem is that Beyoncé, even with her ambition, has yet to suss out that the key to a pop-R&B smash is hook and melody. With the exception of the now-played-out title track (Can we all take a moratorium on this mighty goddess theme for a second, please?) and the equally you-go-girlish "Independent Woman Part 1," most of the tracks here lack a strong core. Beyoncé crams a litany of thoughts and motifs into her mini-anthems, with samples ranging from Stevie Nicks to Tarzan Boy, but though the cuts sizzle and sparkle and throw off much attitude, Survivor is way too frenetic. Even with some strong singing and songs (most notably the laid back "Fancy"), Survivor lacks real emotion. --Amy Linden
