Free Music Notes for Metalocalypse: Dethalbum

Free Music Review: A Perfect Metal Album
Hit: 5 Stars

Like many, when I first heard that there would be a Dethklok album, I wondered how good it could be. It's an imaginary band from a cartoon show- and sure there are some good beats in the show, but I'm sure the CD will be a bunch of short cuts sloppily edited together to make full "songs", right? Very, very wrong. It's absolutely criminal that Dethklok didn't make real awards shows. They may be a fake band, but they're still better than almost any metal that's out there right now.

The Dethalbum opens with a surprisingly moody -slash- comical -slash- metal -slash- melodic romp that hits all the right notes. "Murmaider" is about mermaids (the comical) and murder (the metal). This is an excellent opener both because of the opening "underwater" themes (you can hear faux whale song) lending an excellent mood, as well as conceptual continuity- Murmaider is the leading single of an album produced on the show. This really sets the tone for the album. Everything is accomplished like this is the most serious and well-produced band in the world, and the constant comedy offerigs offer a refreshing contrast in an industry that usually takes itself too seriously.

The water theme is continued with "Go into the Water", which is again heavy on the mood without letting up on the force, but things really kick up with "Awaken". I've seen a lot of reviews say that the early album doesn't have a stand-out uptempo track, and I'd encourage everyone to get their CD players fixed because apparently they're skipping Track #3. "Awaken" is absolutely breathless in its pace. This is an especially powerful track because it absolutely showcases the talents of drummer Gene Hoglan, who in my opinion is one of the top metal drummers alive. The double-bass beats are absolutely brutal (a favored tagline of the band), and the theme of the song relates to summoning a lake troll. It's hard to ask for anything harder than that.

The album continues its force through tracks like "Thunderhorse" (as seen on Guitar Hero) and "Hatredcopter" (about the band's unique chauffeur). There is a great deal of variety in tracks, especially with songs like "Dethharmonic", where the band is backed up by a full orchestra and discusses how they'd murder someone to improve their bottom line, like rather than "...consider not opening a restaraunt, I'd rather you be dead". Comparisons to other metal bands (Metallica) and their forays into the orchestrial are surely intentional. Overall, there's not a single weak track here except perhaps the hidden track "Deththeme", which isn't a bad track, but it's only :36 long.

Writer -slash- guitarist -slash- vocalist -slash- creative force behind the animated show Brendon Small proves himself to be an absolute prodigy. Normally projects where one person plays all roles (aside from drummming) has a certain underproduced sound, and that's not present here. Until someone told you otherwise, you'd think this was a superband with a megaproducer and mega money to make it all happen with. That Dethklok didn't at least get a nomination for "best new artist" in metal is an absolute shame for the industry, in my opinion. They did however set records for sales and highest charting for any death metal album to date, which makes up for a bit.

So yes, this is absolutely a Spinal Tap for the new generation. Only it's a Spinal Tap that's just one guy (and his drummer, and he does use a group to put on live performances), and they're an even better and more well-produced take on their genre. The final joke here isn't that they parody their genre, it's that they're better than their genre in pretty much every measure. Even if you have no idea who Dethklok is, so long as you like metal you're going to love this album. Five stars.

Metalocalypse: Dethalbum Poster

Dethklok is both a virtual death metal band featured in the animated program Metalocalpse, created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, and the virtual band created to perform the band'smusic in live shows. The band is sometimes cited as an example of "comedy rock" on par with bands such as GWAR andSpinal Tap. Metalocalypse centers on the exploits of the biggest, most metal-est band in the world, Dethklok. As the band goes about their daily affairs, the evil (well, more evil) Tribunal tries in vain to stopDethklok from expanding their empire. Each episode features a new song from the band - and now the best of those tracks have beenexpanded, re-recorded and put together with all new songs to make the Dethklok album fans havebeen clamoring for.
There's a fine line between being funny and being a joke. Thankfully, the debut album from Dethklok, the band at the core of Adult Swim's hit animated series Metalocalypse lands squarely in the former category. Performed by series co-creator Brendon Small (Tommy Blacha is Small's creative partner)--with a lot of help from metal drum legend Gene Hoglan (Death Angel, Strapping Young Lad)--songs such as "Birthday Dethday," "Face Fisted," and "Awaken" tap into the unapologetic musical brutality of death metal, while highlighting the often confusing ambiguity of the genre's lyrics. Progressive taxes ("Detharmonic"), the disappointment and seemingly endless cycle of higher education ("Go Forth and Die"), and the obligatory kiss-off to moist-palmed computer geeks who spew vitriol from the safety of Internet chat rooms ("Fansong"), provide the fodder for Small's hilarious, subtle, intelligent and highly quotable lyrics. Make no mistake: The Dethalbum isn't going to supplant your favorite At the Gates or Slayer recordings, but it will provide hours of amusement and joy--perhaps the very enemy of death metal itself, perhaps the very thing that makes Metalocalypse one of the funniest shows on cartoon TV these days and Dethklok the truest rock band since Spinal Tap. --Jedd Beaudoin
