Free Music Notes for Metalocalypse: DethalbumFree Music Review: A must have if you like metal or satire Hit: 4 Stars
By now we all know who Dethklok are, and if you're reading this I'll assume you've seen Metalocalypse. If not, make it your first priority.
It's great to see a show that takes its music so seriously and so lightly all at once. Sound-wise, "Dethklok" can rival (or maybe even top) a lot of popular metal bands today; the drums are frantic and pounding, the solos are wicked, and the melodies are pretty strong. Brendon Small provides Nathan Explosion's growls, and while they sometimes feel more like an impression of death metal vocals, they're comprehensible and at times pretty deep. The Dethalbum definitely stands on its own two feet just as a metal album, but knowing all the homages, puns and contexts from the show will enrich the listening experience so much more.
Some songs stand out with their thematic black humor; "Go Forth And Die" about the direness of getting yourself an education, "Fansong" about how the band are sucking cash out of their ever-droning army of fans (hey, they got mine!), "Briefcase Full Of Guts" about the everyday work struggle, the awesome "Birthday Dethday" which is the new birthday anthem, "Castratikron" about troublesome girlfriends / lady-folk and "Dethharmonic" about the greed of the biggest cultural force in the universe. There are also a few "epics", like "Go Into The Water", "The Lost Vikings" (smells a lot like Amon Amarth to me), and "Awaken" about the Finnish laketroll Mustakrakish.
But not all songs are great, and if it were up to me, I easily would've substituted "Better Metal Snake" and "Hatredcopter" for two of the tracks on the deluxe edition's second disc; "Murdertrain A Comin'" and "Hatredy". There's a little surprise on the disc though, a hidden sixteenth track - namely the show's main theme, "Deththeme". It's only a couple of seconds in length, but it's a pretty cool little addition.
Watch the show, and if you get the album - read the lyrics while you listen! You're guaranteed to crack up at the brutal puns and trickery in most of the songs.
Free Music Review: For fans of the show? Does it matter? Hit: 4 Stars
This album was obviously made for people like me who tivo'd all the original episodes and have watched them multiple times. The songs that are redone on the album (or inspired by events in the show, like Bloodrocuted), are longer, full of vitriol and cussing: Generally exactly what we want dethklok to represent.
They are pure hate.
They are obviously sellouts on the show, but they do produce a surfeit of material to be proud of (for making a 20 episode tv show and producing a pretty long album within a year or so).
I'm not judging this album as an album (of music), so I already know I'm not really hearing it as someone who wasn't a rabid fan of the show would. It is fan-service that I'm stoked to be a part of: I mean, the CD and DVD mirror the parody of marketing and 'supergroups' that the show weaves into its fabric.
A band of extremely popular musicians, to recap the first season, are responsible for a large amount of the world's GDP. They flaunt and abuse their anomie, inhumanity and nihilism, paying homage to many real heavy metal bands. Their influences and source of material range from the mainstream to the obscure.
The new songs, on their first album stand out, as I'm not familiar with them and they seem to expand the band into new outlets not seen in the show. It ranges from something close to cookie monster singing guns and roses to amon amarth singing comical amon amarth.
I'd instantly recommend it to any fan of the show, but not the average metal fan. To them, I always recommend the first season of Metalocalypse. If you're even reading this review, I'm fairly certain you've at least heard of the show. If you've heard of the show it's probably not that far from your tastes. Give it a try.
Free Music Review: Review: Metalocalypse: DethKlok The Dethalbum Hit: 4 Stars
"You people out there give us something more than record sales... You give us something to hate... And we hate you... You brainless MUTANTS."
If you've watched the show, you know how brutal DETHKLOK really is. Besides the fact that the band DETHKLOK is a fake band from an excessively violent cartoon on Adult Swim, DETHKLOK is the most amazing metal band on the planet.
The Dethalbum came out today, and I was first inline to pick it up.
I must say, this is the best cd I have ever purchased.
With ridiculously metal lyrics about Death, Murder, Blood, And Gore, shreds that would make Kerry King bow down, double bass that shatters the foundation of your house, this album is worth more than the $10 I shelled out to get it.
This album features full length versons of the songs you've heard on the television show. The track list goes as follows:
1. Murmaider
2. Go Into The Water
3. Awaken
4. Bloodrocuted
5. Go Forth And Die
6. Fansong
7. Better Metal Snake
8. The Lost Vikings
9. Thunderhorse
10. Briefcase Full Of Guts
11. Birthday Dethday
12. Hatredcopter
13. Castratikron
14. Face Fisted
15. Dethharmonic
I give this cd an amazing 9/10.
Go Buy It.

Free Music Review: Hail the mighty Dethklok Hit: 4 Stars
Garnering a surprising amount of appeal upon its debut on Adult Swim, Metalocalypse tells the tales of Dethklok: the most popular metal band on the planet and then some. For fans of the show, "The Dethalbum" is everything you could ever hope for and then some. Show creator Brendon Small provides the vocals, guitars, and bass work, with legendary Death and Strapping Young Lad drummer Gene Hoglan providing the typically thrashing drum work any metal fan would come to expect. What's most surprising about "The Dethalbum" is that it both celebrates and satires the heavy metal genre, while Small reveals himself as being quite an accomplished musician as well. "Fansong", "Go Forth and Die", "Briefcase Full of Guts", and "Awaken" are funny and more than worth headbanging to, and Small's talent (both musically and comically) is what really drives "The Dethalbum" forward. Though it does wear a little thin towards the end of the disc, "The Dethalbum" is a glorious treat that fans of Metalocalypse will no doubt eat up, and if you're a metal fan and have never seen the show, "The Dethalbum" makes a great introduction to the animated carnage of Dethklok and Metalocalypse.
Free Music Review: Great music for fans of the show Hit: 4 Stars
The Dethalbum is surprisingly a solid metal album that acts as both parody and tribute to the genre. While the music isn't as good as the bands from which they drew inspiration, it does a hell of a job being both a companion to the show and a good album on it's own merits. Being a fan of Metalocalypse, I don't know how I would rate this if I wasn't a fan, but as it is I can honestly say I like it. The interesting thing is the fictional band Dethklok sounds unique enough that they don't really sound like any one band, drawing inspiration from so many bands that they've formed their own unique sound. The only thing I wasn't too keen on were the vocals, which sound okay, but not nearly forceful or violent enough to capture the feel of "the most brutal band on the planet". That's not to say Brendon Small (creator of the show and guitarist, bassist, and vocalist on the album) didn't try hard, because he clearly did, but he's nowhere near as brutal as Jens Kidman (of Meshuggah) or Sauron (of Decapitated). Beyond that minor nit-picking I wholly enjoyed the album and recommend it to fans of the show.
