Free Music Review: ohGr makes the ear candy!
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been following the work of Skinny Puppy (and Nivek Ogre in particular) since the early 90's. One of the reasons why I adore the man so, is that he is true to his own vision of things; even and especially IF some of the fan base doesn't like it. Tough break for them, they are missing out on something special here. Simply put, this record is a roller coaster. From the "Jesus Built My Hotrod" meets "Ballroom Blitz" punky-ness of "Shhh", to the Pink Dots-like tones of "Pepper", this album runs the gamut. Bill Moseley's spoken word presence is a welcomed one, filling in the gaps that film samples might have occupied at an earlier time in industrial music. "EyeCandy" evokes the gloom and spookiness of 'Last Rights' or 'Two Dark Park'. "Psychoreal" could easily be considered a sister song to "Majik" or "Ugli". On the other end of the spectrum, "Feelin' Chicken" reminds one of "Scarecrow" or a possible hiLt track. There is a pharmaceutical kind of euphoria to songs like this, which is always followed by the harsh morning-after effect of pieces like "Whitevan". Could this record be a musical Dante's Inferno? A 21st century Kafka for the ears? You decide.

Free Music Review: Deem It More Deadly
Hit: 5 Stars

The songs on this album are short, experimental, and varied - from thrashing noise music to trip-hoppy electronic - but with a unified, heavily textured production. ohGr's vocals, for better or for worse, are used more as an instrument than as a communicative device.

As noted elsewhere, on a few songs, the vocals are a little too quiet. I listened to Devils In My Details with headphones and didn't have any problems hearing them, but on some speakers I did notice the quietness.

There are a lot of great songs on this album, and the production and ideas are top notch. It's not particularly similar to other ohGr works and I'm glad: ohGr is trying new things rather than resting on tried formulas. The free verse between songs and the overall organization I felt made the album almost cinematic. I usually get distracted from whatever else I am doing when I listen. I hope to see more great albums like this from ohGr in the future too.

Note: I redid my review. I don't think the last one was very good and apparently other people didn't as well. Hopefully this is more informative.

Free Music Review: still enjoys the shock of the unexpected
Hit: 5 Stars

Ohgr = Skinny Puppy - Cevin Key + Mark Walk

It takes a lot of gumption to survive 26 years in the music business, but Ohgr seems to know what it takes: one foot in what you know and one nervously poking at the unknown. "Shhh" stomps like Berlioz on meth, fusing a skittish orchestra with the bang of Nine Inch Nails's "Wish" (possibly getting Mr. Reznor back for comping his style?). "Eyecandy" follows with ohGr's trademarked synthetic growl, the man yelling about god-knows-what under swelling bit-shifted electronics. As the disc progresses, it is evident that ohGr still enjoys the shock of the unexpected, particularly on the back-packer hip-hop meets cabaret of "Feelin' Chicken" and "Pepper". Billed as a concept with nods to Genesis and The Alan Parsons Project, Devils in the Details is a splendid genre-defying notch in ohGr's trilogy of solo albums as he continues to move forward and piss off the Philistines who beg for another "Dig It" and hated Last Rights.

Free Music Review: Relax, open your mind, and enjoy
Hit: 5 Stars

There's not too much to say about this album that hasn't already been said. This album is absolutely brilliant - my only frustration is with the lack of lyrics almost two months after the release. From what I can make of the lyrics, they are WONDERFUL. You don't have to be a writer (though I am one) to appreciate the ingenius juxtapositions and extended metaphors. The music may not seem as "danceable" as the previous two albums, but that's for other people to decide - I can dance to pretty much anything, lol.

I do have to say that, for me, this was an album that I initially was VERY disappointed with. However, unlike say - Mythmaker - I did not stay disappointed for long. This is actually my favorite ohGr CD now, so you can tell it REALLY grew on me once I let go of my "expectations" of how it "should" sound and opened my mind a bit more.

Free Music Review: shades of too dark park, shades of nursery rhymes
Hit: 5 Stars

wow, just, wow, is this for real????

this album is solid, from start to finish. Its an unfolding story, each track is in its own realm, the layers on this remind me of too dark park at times, and then other tracks just create its own vibe away from anything you have heard. I am proud to be an ogre and key fan after the great albums they have put out in all the years.

not one bad moment on here, all brilliant and the live show to support this will be equally amazing i bet.

if you doubted ogres talents in the last years this album will make you change your mind, if you have love for what ogre has done, then this is just another great surprise to enjoy.
mark walk and ogre blow my mind here. True original stuff.

the next skinny puppy should be pretty amazing i bet as well.
