Free Music Notes for Devils In My DetailsFree Music Review: You're Killing Me With Bacon... Hit: 4 Stars
First off, this album is NOT like the previous 2 OhGr releases. Gone is the electro pop goodness, but in its place is the dark, layered, almost cold sounds of Ogre's past. Hell, when I first popped the album in I was geared up for some catchy lil electronica, but what came out of my speakers was what sounded like a Foetus song or some long lost Ministry b-side with its hard, driving drum beat and mixed down, cold vocals. I had to do a double take of the album I had purchased. Yup, it said OhGr, and yup, its Ogre and Mark Walk, but WOW, I was not expecting this.
Devil in My Details is a very challanging and abrasive release. It closly resembles to me what could have been an album made right in between the Skinny Puppy albums Too Dark Park and Last Rights. The song Eyecandy (which I'm seeing a lot of praise for) could fit right on one of those aformentioned albums. The album flows very well together. On my first playthrough I couldn't tell where some songs ended and the other began, as I noticed I was no longer on track 3 but now on track 5. It very cynical, with some very interesting (and rather humourus at times) spoken word sections that make up some of the intro and outros to songs. The spoken word is not done by Ogre, fyi, but by a very capable writer (I forget his name now...)
One thing I noticed right away was the production. At first I thought I bought a rough mix and not the mastered edition, but that is really just the first song (which, I believe, was done on purpose as a kind of joke, listen to the lyrics of Shhh and you may get the subtleness of said joke). What I then realized was the production is very well done, just mixed very abstractly with a lot of layers. This album is meant to be played LOUD! But I state again, this album is challanging and abrasive, so the louder you crank it, the more abrasive it becomes.
Overall, I really enjoyed this album. The whole is better than its parts individually, so try and injest the album in a single sitting if possible (it isn't a very long album. I believe around 40 min). Some things SP fans will enjoy: Steven R. Gilmore did the sleeve and all the art inside, Ogre hits those high pitched Puppy-esqe banshee wales a couple times on the album (which I havn't heard him do in a long while on any new release), Mark Walk really shines on this album and I am really excited to see what he and Ogre and cEvin pull out on the new Puppy album due out next year. This album will not be for everyone and it will polarize fans of the previous OhGr albums, but I feel if you are a fan of the older Puppy material, you need to give this album a spin as it truly is the closest thing to the Puppy music of yore either Key or Ogre (or Walk for that matter) have produced.
Brap on...
Free Music Review: A different Ohgr Hit: 4 Stars
This is not your old Ohgr that you are about to hear. There are not many catchy singles here (actually none). Instead what you have is a full length continuous composition here. That in itself makes this different from Ohgr. It also is a much more abrasive listen to the previous albums. Seldom will you find a grove to get into. If you can accept this up front with this CD you will be rewarded with a truly creative and different approach to industrial music.
Eyecandy is a great song. The course here is chilling. Buried in the noise is a harmony over Ogre's growling that is quite haunting as the music drones over the vocals. This to me is one of the highlights of the album. I also like the spoken word poetry sent throughout the CD. Lines like "You're killing me with bacon, America" are classic. And the polka like music of Feelin' Chicken creates almost a fairy tale like sound scape. This would be of course, a fairy tale gone awry.
All the songs blend well together. If you have bought this CD, give it a few more listens leaving your expectations of a happy listen at the door. Appreciate it for what it is, which a master of his trade exploring new territory and sharing it with us.
Free Music Review: This album had another purpose... Hit: 4 Stars
I can understand people really not liking this record, as it is not as interesting and as dancy as the new wave-ish SunnyPsyOp or the trip-hop flavor of Welt, both albums with great replay value.
I listened to this album once through and was very disappointed. As a life long Skinny Puppy fan, I've since collected all the side projects: Hilt, Download, Plateau, Cyberaktif, Cevin Key's solo stuff, and of course my personal favorite, Ogre's solo work. I personally like SunnyPsyOp better because of the awesome synth work and melodies so I was looking forward to DIMD. After the initial frustration that a lot of you seem to be having as well, I listened to it again from a different angle. Devil In My Details is more of a soundtrack opera of sorts. Its a soundscape of a nightmare. Very atmospheric and would do better listening to at home than rocking out in your car. I put this in my ipod and have been absorbing it when I can. I really like it, but I recommend that you don't compare it to the others. Its a great album. SunnyPsyOp is still the best. If you like Ogre's other stuff, get this. Its a dark record with a lot of cool soundscapes. Nuff said
Free Music Review: Pleasantly Surprised Hit: 4 Stars
I wasn't sure what to expect about this album, some people said it sounded like SP and some said it couldn't have been more different. I agree with both in some ways.
This is honestly one of the most original albums I've heard in a while. The opening track, Shhh, is a very fast, hard, in your face tune, that has some creepy orchestrations. It goes from rather Skinny Puppy-esque songs like that one, and then it goes to songs that are weird, even for him. It goes from that to "Pepper," which sounds almost like a deranged clown talking into a megaphone over circus music.
Rather than saying go into this album expecting this or that, I can almost guarantee you what you hear won't be what you'll escaped. A good, original album. It'll take some time to grow on you, but if you like his other stuff, I'm sure you'll like this.
Free Music Review: Different but not worthless Hit: 4 Stars
I like the fact that Ohgr isn't afraid to try something different with his music. However, and this is a minor however, this isn't the best record that I've heard of his. I give the album 4 out of 5 stars because I'm a pretty big fan of Ohgr; I've enjoyed most of his music.
This is where the "however" comes in.....
If you're expecting to hear beats and riffs that sound like WELT or SunnyPsyOp, you'll probably be dissapointed because you won't find much of that here. It's not as intense, but that can be good. Definately sounds like more of an introverted "looking at the inside from the outside" type of record. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but it takes some getting used to.
The longer you listen to it, the better it gets.
