Free Music Review: Greg Schwartz from The Netherlands is factually wrong
Hit: 3 Stars

This debut Devo album was released in July 1978 and their second in mid 1979.

The Human League's first single was released in June 1978. The first Thompson Twin single was released in April 1980. The first Visage single was released in late 1979.

To say that Devo were in any way influenced by the aforementioned UK bands (as Greg Schwartz from The Netherlands claimed) is simply nonsense. It is true to say that all were influenced by the masters of this genre, the highly original Kraftwerk.

That said, this album is their most raw and punk influenced. It contains some gems but I prefer 'Freedom of Choice' which is why I have only allocated ***.

Anyone interested in the facts about Devo's development and their unique contribution to the evolution of modern music should read "We Are Devo!" by Jade Dellinger & David Giffels.

Free Music Review: an average album
Hit: 3 Stars

i really do not see what is the big deal about this album. i mean, its okay, but, i find it kind of boring, once you have grown accustomed to the somewhat provoking lyrics. i usually flip past this one to something like Pink Flag or Chairs Missing.

Free Music Review: stood test of time for being bizarre
Hit: 2 Stars

I liked this when it first came out b/c I was 16. I was a rebel, wanted to be part of something different. This is their best work since the weirdness does get lame after a while.

Favorite song is Mongoloid...totally strange but rocking song. "Uncontrollable Urge" rocks (in a weird way) and Come Back Johnny is almost a conventional song. Satisfaction is completely unique but its not a good song. The group was obviously trying to do more than music and develop a KISS, multi media, making money kind of thing.

I saw them live (they were horrible) during their hey day. The most interesting thing about them is while other odd bands were eventually accepted and integrated into the mainstream, DEVO is still as odd of a group as ever. Mark Motherbough does a lot of soundtrack work (Rugrats) and you can hear the DEVO in all of his work.

Anybody that gives this novelty group 5 stars is cheapening what true excellent music is. DEVO came out as a Goof, not as serious musicians. They got big in the 70's b/c they were part of the new wave and kids (like me) were looking for alternative music that we can claim our own.

Free Music Review: Same old, same old generic corporate slop
Hit: 1 Stars

This band totally bit their style and message from such Euro-synth groups as Human League, Thompson Twins and Visage.

Get a grip, people, if not for those bands Devo wouldn't even exist.

Go listen to the Spandau Ballet song "Coffee Club" and then listen to "Gut Feeling". Um, Spandau Ballet CALL YOUR LAWYER!!! Plaigirism!!!

Free Music Review: devo ...
Hit: 1 Stars

I enjoy both the Romones and the Talking Heads. The Romones are catching, and the Talking heads have a good rhythm. Devo, however is just bad. If you like annoying screatching and rhythmless covers of other bands, by all means by this album. Tell all your friends that you have no taste in music.
