Free Music Notes for Q: Are We Not Men

Free Music Review: Ground-breaking and unique.
Hit: 5 Stars

When I saw Devo on Saturday Night Live in the late 70's, it blew me away. They looked and sounded like no band that I had ever heard (or dreamed of for that matter!).The next day I ran out and bought this album. I was hooked ever since. People call them "quirky" and "odd" but they are in fact very talented musicians with a big sound and jamming guitar work, never getting their due. They were innovators, and at the forefront of "new wave" music, and this cd in particular is a must buy for those seeking the seminal sound of the early 80's. My personal favorite cuts are "Gut Feeling" (great opening lyrics!) and "Uncontrollable Urge". A must have!

Free Music Review: Truly Sublime
Hit: 5 Stars

While the Devo phenomenon as a whole may be somewhat time encapsulated, this debut album has absolutely remained as cutting-edge and vibrant as the day it came out some 30 years ago. Though the band already had a great satiric concept going (de-evolution), when they teamed up with Brian Eno for this project, the stuff of demented genius was created. The sound straddles punk, new wave, and the simplistic pop ditties of the sixties. The jumpy, jagged, hypercaffeinated tunes perfectly convey Devo's warped take on pop culture, and also serve to further pop as an art form. This is not a disc that I play in heavy rotation, but it sounds fresh every time I hear it, and only gets better with time.

Free Music Review: What a Debute!
Hit: 5 Stars

Devo emerged fully formed on this, their first album. And it's still their best album. The stand out songs are "Mongoloid", "Jocko Homo", and "Uncontrollable Urge". They introduce the concept of De-evolotion on this LP. They would futher explore and develope it on future releases.

Devo was a band that would not sit still. Each LP brought with it a new look and sound for the band. Here they popularised the yellow suits, the future would bring the energy domes and the smart patrol.

Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! Was the start of Devo's comentary/parody of modern life. As vital now as the day it was originaly released.

Free Music Review: PEAK!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is definitely DEVO at their peak. Most would say that this was just the beginning, and to pick up Duty and Freedom. While those albums had some decent tracks, I find this to be the last great statement by Devo. The stellar songwriting combined with Eno's warm production found on this album were never quite repeated. However, Hardcore Volumes 1 & 2 are quite essential, and offer the listener not only a glimpse of what was to come on this great album, but are great artistic statements in and of themselves! IMO, Devo could have reached even greater heights after this album, but that is my opinion!

Free Music Review: radical
Hit: 5 Stars

this is the best punk rock/new wave record i have ever heard hands down. devo paved the way for a more intelligent, different style and asthetic of music and they will never get the credit and recognition they deserved for crafting it. people only judge them by their only hit (im not even gonna mention it) and that is extremely pathetic because they r all missing out on their finest work. if u like music that matters then u will buy this album immediatly--- or u can always just go back to listening to that old regurgitated alternative slime on the air waves. freedom of choice is wat u got.
