Free Music Review: Separate but equal to some of her other stellar releases
Hit: 5 Stars

After spending the past few weeks listening to her other releases I own, it's apparent to me that Diana Krall's "Live in Paris" highlights several qualities which aren't as noticeable on the other albums. For one, her voice is fuller, huskier, and shows a greater dynamic range here than on many of her studio-recorded tracks. In addition, the more open arrangements which come with a live gig allow her jazz piano skills to shine in ways not often heard on the albums. Finally, the rhythmic variations she displays with her voice and fingers throughout the performance aren't utilized much on her earlier albums.

After listening through the album several times, my personal faves are "The Look of Love," "Maybe You'll Be There," and "A Case of You." I don't care much for the version of "Just the Way You Are" included here. Though it's included as a bonus track, its polished smooth-jazz/pop sound doesn't fit well with the jazzy, more open and engaging tracks which precede it.

All in all, if you've seen Ms. Krall live (I saw her in D.C. in April) I heartily recommend this CD - it'll bring back what makes evenings with her so memorable. And if you haven't seen her live, this CD will make you want to.

Free Music Review: This woman gives me chills
Hit: 5 Stars

Bought this CD yesterday after I read that she had a live version of "A Case of You" I saw Ms. Krall in San Francisco this past May where she performed this song and I tell you that this song was so moving that you could literally hear a pin drop.

I have played this CD from Track 1 through Track 12 at least 3 times since I bought it last night, then brought it to work to burn on my CD here so I could listen to it. If that doesn't tell you it's worth buying I don't know what does. As I say in all of my music reviews everyone has their own "ear" for music. I happen to LOVE Diana's music and unlike several other reviewers on here... I do "get" her and really enjoy her husky voice. Seeing her live was such a pleasure it really made me appreciate this fine Songstress. I come from a family of entertainers I grew up with a brother that was always on stage and I got to see/hear some quality performances as I grew up so when I say her CD WOWED me, it did.

I have at least 5 of Ms. Krall's recordings and I can't say that I liked this one anymore than I liked her last but I can say that if you have her previous CD's you won't be dissapointed in purchasing this one as well.

Free Music Review: If they let me give ten stars.........
Hit: 5 Stars

....this one would get them. I've written a couple of other five star reviews of Diana's records, and talked about the great material, and beautifully seductive voice. I even discussed the [limited] commercial value of sexy album jackets. It's all true.....

....but this trumps it. Diana in the studio is fabulous, but Diana live, connecting with the audience and her band, goes way beyond that. You can feel the magic. Some singers live don't measure up [no names]. Others, like our dear Carly Simon, have to overcome massive stage fright. [Carly has only one live album, great as it is]... I have no idea how much stage fright Diana has [and stage fright is real; been there, done that. I'm lucky that I actually enjoy the feeling]. Some fortunate singers are actually improved by a real audience. Whatever Diana's feelings, she gives the audience [and us] her all. I've not heard Diana in person, but on this recording we can get the electricity of a special experience.

Diana Krall is a treasure in earthen vessel....a beautiful girl, with a voice for the ages. If you're not familiar with her music, I'm sorry. If you only know her studio recordings, you've GOT to hear this.

Free Music Review: "Live in Paris" Audio CD
Hit: 5 Stars

This live concert CD has nothing but good things to recommend it and I would say to anyone who likes standards done right as well as terrific bossa nova arrangements done by the masterful Claus Ogerman - that you can simply do no wrong in buying this audio CD. Not to mention that Diana Krall is quite an accomplished musician and her jazz piano skills really impressed me in this concert.

The only thing that has me puzzled, however, is why a non-live (studio recorded) Billy Joel track was subsituted for the wonderful Nat King Cole-inspired "Love Letters" (also arranged and conducted by Ogerman). I do not see a reason for this subsitution on the audio CD.

If you are driving around in your car or want to listen to good music while you are traveling, the audio CD is definitely the way to go. However, if you are home or have access to a DVD player in your location, nothing beats the DVD of this concert - where you can see as well as hear these first-rate musicians play, almost as if you were attending the concert yourself (with some considerable advantage to the DVD viewer with the excellent camera angles provided).

Free Music Review: Diana doing what she does best.
Hit: 5 Stars

I always get a little excited when another Diana Krall cd is released. I think I have almost everything she's recorded commercially and have rarely been disappointed. She's not Oscsar Peterson or Shirley Horn but then who is? She is just Diana doing what she does best, just playing, swinging and singing with mostly with a small group that really kicks on several cuts like the opener, "I Love Being Here With You". She also included a few cuts from other cd's (Deed I do, Devil May Care, etc.). Personally, I think a great deal of Diana Krall's success has been due to her ability to put just enough of a vocal twist to many old standards to pump some new life in them and make them appealing again. She does that again on this cd.If I had any complaint about this particular cd, it would be the lack of album notes which, for some reason, were restricted to track listings. I would have enjoyed some description of her Paris tour.Other than that, I believe "Live in Paris" is another one of Diana's cd's that will again spur the question from casual listeners "Who's that singing"?It's Diana Krall.
