Free Music Notes for Live in ParisFree Music Review: Her best recording to date Hit: 5 Stars
I was lucky to "discover" Ms Krall early in her career. I was impressed with her voice and with her band. Each of her recordings have been a little more polished than the previous release, sometimes making them slightly bland. "Live In Paris" is, however, Diana Krall at her best. The band is tight and the arrangements are superb. Her voice is at its peak and the recording is detailed. Her rendering of Joni Mitchell's "Case of You" sticks in my mind as a truly magic moment. My only complaint is that the final song, "Just The Way You Are" should not be here. It's not that the song or the recording or the performance is bad. It's actually rather good. It's something of a bonus track on a recording that doesn't need any bonuses. It was obviously recorded in an atmosphere totally different from the live songs and it doesn't belong. Program the CD to end with "Case of You" and you will enjoy the performance much more. Come back to "Just The Way You Are" another time.
Free Music Review: The real Diana Krall is back Hit: 5 Stars
This last Diana Krall's Cd, Live in Paris, is, together with her two first albums "Stepping Out" and "Only trust Your Heart", her best. I saw her last concert in Oporto, Portugal (September 2002), just a month before this Live Album in Paris was released and I was absolutly overwhelmed by the astonishing change operated in her. I had seen her live, also in Oporto, portugal, five years before (in 1997) and I had been quite dissapointed with her performance : extremely cool with the public, there was absolutly no interaction with the audience, and her piano (and piano solos) could be hardly heard. This time , the change was amazing: not only, in jazzistic terms, she had return to her debut style (the one of her two- and best- first albums), performing strong and very good piano solos, bet she was also much more at ease, more warm, more talkative.I had also the pleasure to meet and greet her personally, as the Public Relations Manager of the hotel she stayed in. I'm loking forward for her next album.
Free Music Review: The REAL Diana Krall comes alive again! Hit: 5 Stars
This is the one!I saw Diana Krall live at Blues Alley, in DC, some four years ago when he was right on the cusp of her current popularity. She put on a great show, just her and a guitarist and bass. They played swing infectious arrangements that went on for 10-15 minutes at a time. She was really enjoying herself, the group seemed to be having a joyous time playing off each other and the audience loved her performance, too. There was been a palpable sense of drudgery in her last shlocky album with the 1001 strings, "Look of Love", where she sounded like she was sleepwalking. She was bored. This is what she really sounds like if you take her away from the studios and the big halls and the orchestras (except for the junk at the end). My favorite here is the sassy "East of the Sun". I would have liked to hear the group stretch out a little more but after "the Look of Love" this is a welcome change - an album with Jazz and energy! And I like her Nat King Cole style piano.
Free Music Review: Jazz Heroin(e) Hit: 5 Stars
This album runs the risk of being classified a Schedule 1 drug by the FDA for its remarkable addictive potential. Yes, Diana Krall is like aural heroin on this electrifying CD. Her pacing, her rich, sultry voice and her impeccable pianistic skills shine like very few artists around today. I have played piano for nearly 50 years (God, am I THAT old?) and find that I simply MUST play along with this album every time I listen to it. This is also one of the best recorded live albums I have ever heard from an audiophile perspective. My system seduces me into believing that she is literally playing in my living room along with her great backup musicians. I saw her live at the Algonquin Hotel in New York about 5 years ago and the verve, swing and intimacy that I heard at that concert are clearly in evidence here on this cd. It looks like this brief review will be one of many 5 star ones for this album. It is certain to be a classic. Buy one, but if you don't have any money, this album is so good...
Free Music Review: The Swinging Diana Krall is Back! Hit: 5 Stars
This CD has what Diana Krall does best and what I really want to hear her do: get togther with a cookin' rhythmic combo and just swing through some jazz tunes. She really finds a solid groove and sits right in the pocket during almost every tune. Her piano playing gets better all the time: simple, with just the right combination of single note elegance and splendid jazz licks. Listen especially to her performances here of "Let's Fall in Love" and "East of the Sun." She doesn't play a lot of notes, but she sure plays the right ones. They are right on the money. Jimmy Rowles and Hank Jones would be pleased. "Look of Love?" Well, OK, it was a different marketing shot, but my two cents ask that she put that aside now and get back to swinging and jazz, just like we get it here. One quibble: she sings such great tunes with such classic melodies, it would nice to hear her actually sing them, rather than to play around with every one. The great jazz singers always sang a few songs straight.
