Free Music Review: Classic jazz in a classic style - nuanced and tight!

I don't know how you could rate this one anything less than 5 Stars. To me, it's an album you could give someone who you were encouraging in their love of Jazz along with Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and Time Out by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. I think it's that good.
Her style of play here is definitely New York sophisticated Jazz with all the nuance and complexity (that sounds simple and clean) that that style of play represents. Her voice moves easily from that smokey sensuality to a more sassy kind of delivery and it does so in a way that sounds very natural, not forced.
On piano, Diana Krall has got it goin' on. She does a great job of matching her texture on the keys to what her voice is doing on the vocal... and it's always right on the money. Soft and soothing on one tune... to sassy and punchy on the next - always just what the song calls for. She lets you know why these song choices are called 'Standards'.
It's a small group here - no string or horn sections. There's Mr. Stanley Turrentine dropping in his spirited little tenor sax riffs at seemingly the perfect moments. He is but one of all the extremely courteous musicians here - no one is trying to dominate the mix. The quality of musicianship is nothing less than sterling which yields an extremely tight, grooved sound.
If you're looking for some great background sounds for having a few drinks or maybe a candlelight dinner, you could not ask for a better source.
I was fortunate enough to be living in Spokane, WA, when Ms. Krall came out on her first tour supporting this album and it was one of the richest concert experiences I've ever had. I think that's in part why I like this disc so much; she sounds true to her own heart here... and you can trust me on that.
