Free Music Review: It's Oh Sooo So Nice!
Hit: 5 Stars

"This album is a representation of who I am: a woman who's 44 and feels great about herself and her marriage and her kids." ~ Diana Krall ~

I welcome and embrace this latest offering from one of my favorite modern-day jazz divas with enthusiastic ears knowing that one of my favorite arrangers, Claus Ogerman, is in the picture. After the gigantic success of The Look of Love, I was really hoping for a follow-up album that will reunite Diana Krall and Claus Ogerman. I am extremely glad that they finally made it happen and it is worth the long wait. Like Nelson Riddle and Frank Sinatra, they are a proverbial match made in heaven - they truly bring out the best in each other.

I've read an article written by Brian Truitt on the latest issue of "USA Weekend" that this album is Diana Krall's "love letter" to her hubby, Elvis Costello. It is indeed. The material is a charming and romantic mix of standards from the Great American Songbook and Brazilian Songbook plus two contemporary songs "Walk On By" and "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" set into typical Claus Ogerman's lush arrangements and orchestrations that are endearing to the ears.

Her sultry vocals and stunning piano techniques are backed by seasoned musicians who are my favorites as well - they are all "incredibly-mean" in their respective instruments: Anthony Wilson (guitar), John Clayton (bass), Jeff Hamilton (drums) and Paulinho da Costa (percussion), and not to mention a lush sixty-piece-orchestra that utilizes violins, celli, basses, alto/bass flutes, French horns, oboe, tuba and vibes.

The album's musical ambiance is cool, light, breezy and inspiring from start to finish which is perfect for unwinding on quiet nights. Who could ever resist listening to these songs executed in the most relaxing and beguiling settings? I could foresee another Grammy-winning-album that starts off beautifully with one of Rodgers and Hart's treasures, "Where Or When" and wraps up with a fittingly-gorgeous-ender, Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye."

There is no uninspiring track from this set, not even an obscure Brazilian song by Antonio Carlos Jobim, "Este Seu Olhar," which becomes an ear-candy with her softly sweet rendition. The entire album is such a delight, all the songs are superbly interpreted most especially my favorites: "Too Marvelous For Words," "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry," "Walk On By" and of course three of the most popular Bossa Nova staples and ultimate charmers - "The Boy From Ipanema," "So Nice" and "Quiet Nights."

As the saying goes..."Beauty is in the ear of the beholder." To my ears, this is an absolutely beautiful album that I wholeheartedly recommend for your listening pleasure of a lifetime. This is definitely among the top five that I adore from her discography along with When I Look in Your Eyes, The Look of Love, Love Scenes and From This Moment On.

"Bossa Nova is more like a whisper than a scream." ~ Anthony Wilson ~

Free Music Review: Quiet Nights: Too Marvelous For Words
Hit: 5 Stars

I just received this album on yesterday as a B'day gift from my Ladyfriend and I'm amazed and absolutely LOVING Quiet Nights!??! I'm a huge fan of Diana Krall & The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra...so naturally I'm excited to see John Clayton & Jeff Hamilton in the album credits for all of the songs also a treat that's "SO NICE" to see Paulinho DaCosta's name listed under the Percussion on MANY but not ALL the songs. I've always loved his percussion styles(personally)back to stuff he did with Anita Baker in the 80's! Anthony Wilson always does his thing on Guitar. Then there's the FULL Orchestra...reminds me of the Diana Krall "WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES" & "LOOK OF LOVE" era. I LOVE Diana Krall have all the albums...this CD just completed my DK collection and of course now it's on my Microsoft ZUNE and my Blackjack2 so that "Quiet Nights" NEVER leaves my side. YEAH! This album is THAT good! I just don't have "Love Scenes" on mp3 yet...still have that on Cassette tape from my High School days!?!? *LOL* I'll still cherish that Cassette when I DO get the album via mp3 here at Amazon...no use in getting the CD since I've got the tape with all the Production Credits in it!?!?

In closing "QUIET NIGHTS" is a S'wonderful listen and the album is targeted for exactly what it's Title says....QUIET NIGHTS! The lush string arrangements, the groove of Jeff Hamilton on Drums, Anthony Wilson strumming along with the Steinway & Sons under Diana's fingertips topping that are the rich room(or CAR *LOL*)filling Bass lines from John Clayton! The type of album you can just put on and relax to OR spend a QUIET NIGHT with that somebody special! Dare I say that, Diana made a 120% "MOOD" album this time around!?!? That's NOT a very far stretch...I'm sure those fans that OWN this album like me will agree. I've always personally enjoyed DK's SWING & Bossa Nova styles...but in the past I would play "WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES" to hear those Beautiful Orchestra accompanied songs...and say MAN, I love how lovely these songs are why doesn't she bring BACK the Orchestra?? But now I have QUIET NIGHTS! Its kinda like "When I Look In Your Eyes: Reloaded for 2009" I cannot wait to catch the QUIET NIGHTS Tour in the USA! I'm sure that "SO NICE" will be magical performed Live! I always enjoy her Concerts her stage presence/performance is amazing! Oh yeah, I'll be picking up the LIVE IN RIO DVD too when released in May *wink*

If you're a fan of DK and enjoy her Bossa Nova style & Orchestra Arrangements during her "WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES" & "THE LOOK OF LOVE" era you're going to LOVE "QUIET NIGHTS" an album that's 100% or 120% (if you buy the bonus tracked album) of Bossa Nova & Orchestra Greatness! This album really is TOO MARVELOUS FOR WORDS.

Free Music Review: Superb!...negative reviewers are missing the point.
Hit: 5 Stars

Okay, I've read the negative reviews of this excellent CD. I truly believe they are missing the point. It's called "Quiet Nights" people! Some reviewers say it makes them fall asleep or "I listened to it while driving to work & it is a snoozer". Well, if you are looking for a morning drive CD, then this isn't it. It doesn't swing & bop like some of the past Diana CD's because it wasn't meant to. Light a candle, grab your sweetheart & bask in the glow. It makes me love & appreciate my wife even more when I listen to this & think of her. This is a cd for lounging, relaxing & loving. Why would she "belt" out the vocals on romantic bossa nova classics? It should be a sultry whisper which it is & her voice conveys a sensual loving spirit like no other vocalist I've ever heard. Elvis Costello must be the luckiest guy on the planet! I'm sure Diana will make other CD's in the future that will really swing, but this one is a different flavor. Claus Ogerman's arrangements are very gentle & lush. The man is a legend...one of the finest arrangers that the world has ever known. I feel honored to have another of his works to enjoy. The singing is full of vulnerability & warmth. This cd is meant to chill folks! The songs, singing & arrangements are beyond beautiful, romantic & tender. If you aren't interested in an entire cd of laid back ballads, then this may not be your cup of tea. But for me, it'll be in constant rotation in my cd player. Close your eyes & let the warmth flow over you as it was meant to. If you listen with the right frame of mind, it can move you to tears. It puts a smile on my face every time I listen to it. Wonderful!

Free Music Review: Atmospheric, Sexy, Totally Enjoyable
Hit: 5 Stars

I have never been a fan of Diana's music, but this record has totally won me over. I really love it--I know I will listen to it again and again. The whole record was a pleasure, but my favorite track has to be "You're My Thrill"--fantastic.

I can't understand why anyone would give this album anything but 5 stars. It seems like a lot of reviewers are upset that Diana isn't singing exactly the same way she did 10 years ago. That seems a little harsh. Is she really supposed to just keep repeating herself over and over again? Her life has changed, so it seems only right that her music should evolve as well.

For me, her singing is much sexier and warmer than it used to be. I loved the "breathiness" that has everyone so freaked out. I felt it gave the record a very confidential, intimate tone--like whispered secrets. I also sensed a lot more confidence from her--she really owned those songs, while still paying proper respect to their origins.

And by the way, no fair reviewing this record based on the free audio clips. Anyone writing a review ought to really listen to the entire record first. Another small point several other reviewers seem to have missed: Este Seu Olhar is sung in Portuguese--not Spanish.

Free Music Review: Brilliance!
Hit: 5 Stars

I climbed aboard the Diana Krall bandwagon somewhere around
Look of Love which is a stunning album - so I am not "that up"
on the "earlier" Krall vocal style that reviewers here are
lamenting for a return to. I just purchased Quiet Nights and
after one listen I am blown away by it. The classic songs never
get old and always move me and the arrangements are highly
creative. I would buy anything orchestrated by the genius Claus
Ogerman anyway ... so as far as his stamp on this album is concerned,
that makes it a winner. Now getting down to commenting on the
vocal style employed by Diana on this record ... I find it
brilliant, intimate and emotionally evocative. It seems like she
is taking the minimalist road which to me is the mark of a musical
genius ...ie Miles Davis. Her phrasing is brilliant in the mold
of the greatest singer of all time (in my opinion) ... Frank Sinatra.
So ... Im not sure what these reviewers are hearing but I think
this CD is a masterpeice of gorgeous understatement and simplicity. It
is heads above the steady torrent of crap being churned out by the
current music biz machine.
