Free Music Review: Beautiful album, have no fears
Hit: 5 Stars

Diana Krall is on magnificent form here, please have no fears.

The critic who thinks this hovers close to "bubblegum pop" is raving. Britney Spears is not going to lose any sales to Diana Krall with this album, or any other. So why would he want to hurt D.K.'s sales to jazz fans by trashing "The Girl In The Other Room?" Some kind of sexual jealousy, perhaps?

It is surprising how narrowminded and possessive critics can be. They will tell you how they love Diana Krall, but will give this wonderful album 2 stars because it isn't what they expected. Like she somehow betrayed their trust by not consulting them before marrying Elvis Costello and -- even worse -- by singing his compositions.

But artists don't belong to anyone except themselves. Ms Krall is a dazzling young talent evolving in all directions. It is a privilege to hear this exciting, thoughtful, intelligent, immensely enjoyable jazz album. As always, she has the capacity to make her studio recordings sound as spontaneous and intimate as her live ones.

Easily gets 5 stars.

Free Music Review: The girl in the other room rocks.
Hit: 5 Stars

After reading a review in "Jazz Times" and knowing that Elvis Costello was a part of this album, I thought that "The girl in the other room" would be a new journey for all of the fans of Diana's and the opinions would split. No surprise here...
Great album, might be her greatest. The singing is sexy and sophisticated, the piano sounds superbly, the musicians are great and the songs, perhaps, reveal many recent changes in her life.
OK, all you big time critics of this album, suggest to me what other jazz singer could sing Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits as personal as Diana Krall did? And when we loved all her previous albums full of standards, many of as wondered if Diana ever going to have own originals, and showcase herself as a talented songwriter.
Oh, yes. She may, at some point do a Jobim, Bessy Smith,Sinatra, or, maybe, even Cher songbook and will do it beautifully. But now I welcome "The girl in the other room" with open ears. Gorgeous music. Ray Brown, Jimmy Rowles and Rosemary Clooney would have been proud of this album.

Free Music Review: Her Absolute Best Album To Date!!! AAA+++
Hit: 5 Stars

this is an awesome begining to what feels like an entirely new era in Diana Krall's career. This is not a major departure so hardcore kall fans need not be scared. Rather, this is a smooth transition with a mixture of covers and originals (penned by Krall and Costello) that feels like the most logical and natural transition a tue artist would make. Her choice of covers as always is impeccable. Her phrasing, piano chops, and musicality faultless. As always, the caring touch of co-producer Tommy LiPuma sets up a vibe for the musicianship to rise to the top, along with delivering the performances on recording in a sonic beauty rarely heard in thi millenium. this is an amazing demo disc for an amazing stereo - please don't waste your time listening to this record in compressed mp3 files - that would be a shame.

The most striking thing to me is the sincere depth of emotion that one can feel from Diana while giving this a serious listen.

awesome all the way around. kudos to krall, costello & the stellar musicians performing this music.

Free Music Review: Modern Jazz, Modern Songs - The very best of Diana Krall
Hit: 5 Stars

In this album Diana moves past the stilted hero-worship and bland retro-staged recreations of years past, and creates her own sound. If your idea of ideal jazz is that which recreates the same arrangements, with the same songs as 1950, then you won't like it.

As a jazz musician and composer there's nothing more stifling than the idea that the genre stopped 40 years ago. Its funny to hear comments like the songs on this new album are just "pop music", when in the golden years of jazz, it *was* popular music! Jazz artists through the decades have always taken the best current songs and made them their own, even in the bop years.

Sure, there's lots of modern jazz that is "smooth" pap, not worthy of the name, but this is the opposite of that trend. For all of the complaints this album has a traditional acoustic jazz combo orchestration and sound, but with an energy and push that is lacking in her other albums.

Free Music Review: Jazz facists, be dammed!! This album rocks!!
Hit: 5 Stars

For all you jazz facists (or "purists", as they like to call themselves) who have a problem with Diana Krall's "The Girl In The Other Room", I have four words for you: Keep it to yourselves. Who cares what you think???!!! The rest of us out there in the real world see this album for the musical masterpiece that it is. Where it is written that jazz artists have to do ONLY cover tunes??? It's about time somebody try to do something different, and Diana Krall is the person to do it. I'm utterly astounded that she's managed to take music that was designed for blues (Stop This World - Track 1), country (Almost Blue - Track 4) or the regular pop world (Black Crow - Track 8) and transform them into kick ass jazz tunes. And that's ... selling out??? PLUEEEZZE!! This album has got to be some of the best stuff that Diana's ever put out. At the end of the day, I got my money's worth, and I'll never understand how anybody couldn't feel that way.
