Free Music Notes for The Girl In The Other RoomFree Music Review: Overcoats Hit: 5 Stars
This Diana Krall set is now 5 years old as it enters my collection. When music is good, it's almost timeless. Tom Waits' song "Timeless" is playful with Christian McBride's delicious bass. Her reading of Elvis Costello's "Almost Blue" is passionate and dives to the bottom of an emotional ocean with its throbbing bass line. What first drew me to the album was to see how she would handle Chris Smither's "Love Me Like a Man." Unfortunately, she uses Bonnie Raitt's sanitized lyrics rather than Smither's raw original. That said, the track smokes musically with some weeping guitar and Krall's rolling piano. She takes Joni Mitchell's intriguing "Black Crow" and toys between urgency & blasé. The closer "Departure Bay" is a pretty track, stark with Diana & a keyboard accented arrangement, "The house was bare of Christmas lights; It came down hard that year, outside in our overcoats." This is a stark and lovely emotional CD. Enjoy!
Free Music Review: Diana has a winner Hit: 5 Stars
The Girl In The Other Room is as good as her Grammy award winning When I Look In Your Eyes album. The more I listen to it the more I love the album. Almost Blue is my favorite song from the album and also like very much Temptation. The musical interludes between the vocals showcase some great musicians including Diana at the piano. As soon as one fantastic song ends on this album another one just as good starts playing. Liked the way her albums change concepts from album to album like The Look Of Love which to me is the best easy listening album of all time is mostly slow tempo type songs while this album has some much more up tempo songs like Love Me Like A Man. Have waited since September 18th of 2001 for her next studio album and hope I never have to wait that long ago again. And now that The Girl In The Other Room is out can enjoy the music she and Elvis Costello put together and I think the album is another winner for Diana.
Free Music Review: A Sublimely Beautiful Work of Art Hit: 5 Stars
I am new to Diana Krall, but what a discovery! I have now heard some of her straight-ahead jazz work, which of course is brilliant. However, I can't for the life of me understand why some of her fans don't like this album. Hey folks, people grow and change - that's life. Her mother died, by all accounts they were very close, and that inspired a lot of the tone of this album. The result is a lot of achingly beautiful songs - if "Departure Bay" does not give you chills, you are made of stone. This is one of those rare musical works that just keeps getting better every time I hear it - we have a true genius here, and her collaboration with Elvis Costello just makes her even better. Don't miss this one - who knows when you'll hear anything else like it. (Yes, there is a kinship with some of Joni Mitchell's best work - another towering Canadian genius - but it's wonderful that Diana had Joni to look to for inspiration.)
Free Music Review: Unbelievably touching and beautiful... a jewel. Hit: 5 Stars
I am a very longterm DK fan.... have seen her 3 times in concert over the past 10 years. I have always loved her music; and her piano playing...well, I can only aspire to ever playing as well!
After a few years away from a DK CD purchase due to new motherhood (just plain busy!!!), I bought "The Girl In the Other Room". I recognized a similar DK that I've always loved in the first few songs. But then the last few.... OH MY GOD! She has a new sound... so interesting and haunting. No doubt in my mind, an influence of her new love, Elvis Costello. She has opened her soul and gone deeper into her emotions. VERY amazing! This is a big, big hit for her..... so different. She is defintitely exhibiting a new level of expression that was unknown... and we are all the very lucky ones to be privy to the unfolding of yet another level of Diana Krall's amazing talent!
Bows and courtsies to you, DK!
Free Music Review: unusual for her? thats good! Hit: 5 Stars
I can not understand people who complain of quite a different approach of Diana Krall on this CD. Why should she only take old songs and sing and play them? Sure, she gives new life to all the standards and i like most of the songs she did mor ethan the originals for her exquisite voice and her own style. Yet this new album with her own music and texts based on her own thoughts and life makes listening more personal, more intimate...
Anyway, this CD still is a jazz cd. It may be more open to the mainstream listener, but thats a good thing. Good jazz should not be available only to a small group of elitist listeners. DK can open the doors for many people.
The sound of the CD is well rounded, it can not beat live performance which will always have more energy and rawness into it, but its great to listen to with your girlfriend prefferably in front of a burning fireplace
