Free Music Notes for The Girl In The Other RoomFree Music Review: My all-time favourite album Hit: 5 Stars
Reading some of these negative reviews, I must disagree. I guess this is one of those love-or-hate albums.
For me, this album is my favourite album, by any artist, by far.
I keep coming back to it every so often and always enjoy the sheer musicality, the moods, the honest acoustic feel, the lyrics, etc.
It is also my reference record when I try out new speakers, new home theatre components, etc. as I find that this quality acoustic/jazz/blues/vocal music can be very revealing for sub-standard equipment.
No, this may not necessarily be a very accessible album, especially if all you are looking for is smooth elevator-music-like jazz. I think this album is for serious listening and solitary contemplation & enjoyment. It may reward you richly if you go to it without being hung up on her previous repertoire.
Free Music Review: Remarkable, outstanding, and delightful Hit: 5 Stars
One of the notable pleasures of great artists is enjoying their creative development. Diana Krall's previous work can be very much enjoyed without insisting that new performances simply repeat what has gone before. I disagree strongly with the reviewer from Nashville, TN who claims that the nays have it. If one does not insist on hearing with preset expectations, one will find this new collection both delightful and truly rewarding. From pieces in more familiar style like Temptation and Love me Like a Man to new territory such as Narrow Daylight, I'm Coming Through, and the remarkable Departure Bay, this offering is worth both appreciation and many listenings. Singing and at the piano, Krall is wonderful. The ensemble playing could not be better. Jazz has always combined the capacities for deep appreciation of the past and openness to new directions.
Free Music Review: The Coming of Age of Diana Krall Hit: 5 Stars
Brilliant!
What more can you ask from Ms Krall. After all these years of improvising on standards, she came up with this gem of an album. The 12 songs starting from "Stop the World" and ending with "Departure Bay" is so varied in each of its texture and style. This is the first of Diana's album where the word generic is absent from the description of her delivery.
One just need to listen to her rendition of Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow" to get a feeling of where the rest of "The Girl in the Other Room" is leading you to. Her bluesy trademark is well represented on track number 6 "Love Me Like a Man". These 2 selections are fine examples of Diana's diversity in style here.
"The Girl in the Other Room" is delightful and as stated by one of the reviewers this could really be Ms Krall's "Kind of Blue"!
Free Music Review: Oh ye narrow minded, we can't stay in the past forever! Hit: 5 Stars
After reading the horrible customer reviews, it is clear that they didn't listen to this album with an open mind. I am a big fan of Diana Krall and thinks she's a major talent. And this album proves just that. It's innovative and bold. Sometimes love and loss makes a singer sappy, maudlin, and full of self pity. But Krall proves that you can be sad,but not pitiful. The jazz is subtle, but there is no mistake that it's a jazz record. So,I say kudos to you Diana for taking a brave step forward, branching out and making jazz more accessible. It is far more interesting than anything on pop radio. So,here's a talented musician growing leaps and bounds and all the jazz purist can do is cry foul! To anyone who really listens to this album and doesn't think that it's a jazz record, then my advise to you is "You ought to get that checked."
Free Music Review: The Best Album I've Purchased IN YEARS!! Hit: 5 Stars
The Girl in the Other Room is - in one word - FABULOUS. Diana Krall has always been a very talented vocalist and pianist and I have most of her other albums. And I really like them. But her latest record (Girl in the Other Room) is an entirely different thing.
Krall has always, until now, pretty much been a "cover girl". Her songs have previously been covers of various jazz classics. Diana's not a "cover girl" now though. Her relationship with Elvis Costello (now her husband) has led to an unbelievably impressive musical collaboration between these two. With Diana writing the music, and Elvis doing the lyrics, Girl in the Other Room contains some of the very best songs I've heard in many years. Unbelievably intense, emotive, passionate, and downright fun-to-listen to music.
