Free Music Notes for The Girl In The Other RoomFree Music Review: Get to know The Girl ... Hit: 5 Stars
With fully half the tracks being co-authored with hubby Elvis Costello, Ms. Krall steps beyond her rep as a crossover, pop-jazz cover queen. Costello's lyrics lope through the darker side of relationships, particularly on the title track. And Krall delivers with a mesmerizing melancholy, following the story lines deep into the evening shadows. As for the other six tracks, yes, the requisite torch standards are present - a sensual "Temptation," a longing "Almost Blue" - but even the remaining covers suggest new directions for Krall. She's moving toward more contemporary writers, such as Joni Mitchell (a low, slow "Black Crow"), or Chris Smithers / Bonnie Raitt (a lusty "Love Me like a Man" that leaves no doubt as to Krall's intentions). Get to know The Girl in the Other Room; you'll wonder why you didn't do so sooner.
Free Music Review: Inventive -- Breaking out of Stale Standards Mode Hit: 5 Stars
I am not surprised to see that people who like Krall's previous jazz standards CDs don't like this one. It is inventive and very easy on the ears but in an original, creative way. The songs on which Costello and Krall collaborate are excellent. I was NOT a Krall fan. In fact, I did not like her previous collection of stale cotton candy versions of jazz standards. They were simply boring musically and vocally. Being a hard core jazz fan, I have heard much better versions of those standards. To me she was a pretty face reintroducing standards to those who don't know they are standards. This disc, however, has made me a fan. Hopefully she will keep up this inventive, original streak in spite of her fans temporary disappointment over her change in path or, better yet, her progression to maturity as a musician.
Free Music Review: What a Wonderful Experience Hit: 5 Stars
Where have I been? The girl in the other room is the first time I've experience the gift of Diana Krall. This is absolutely one of the most soulful jazz CD I have ever had the pleasure to hear. My favorite cuts, "I'm Coming Through", "Black Crow" and "Departure Boy" are so deep, heavy and thought provoking. They take me back to the great recordings of the 60's where you were compelled to listen over and over and the meaning maybe difference each time. The entire CD is such a pedestal for Diana's voice. I have to wonder how can someone so young sing with such deep emotion. Her talent with the piano and the instrumentation of the other musicians, especially the drummer and lead guitar, elevates this CD into the classic category along with the likes of john Coltrane and Miles Davis.
Free Music Review: This is great! Hit: 5 Stars
I've been listening to Diana Krall for a couple of years now. I bought the CD "Love Scene" some while ago. No strings, just bass, gitar and Diana. I bought another record for my mom, it had string arrangements, but seemed descent. This has been typically Diana, hasn't it, a record for your mom. She has been somewhat overhyped. She is clever, but a bit too slick and easy. The Girls in the Other Room is, as I see it, is her first no-compromising album so far! This is GREAT musicmanship (is this an english word?). Diana performs with a feeling for the music that is both unique and admireable. I don't care much for many of her earlier albums, I find them too easy. This one I really enjoy. Her best so far!! What else do I like? Miles, Mingus, Monk, and not to forget Polly Jean!! And now: Diana Krall.
Free Music Review: Soulful and beautiful - her best yet! Hit: 5 Stars
I was surprised that CD didn't get very high reviews. True, it is a different from her previous stuff, so if that is what you are looking for in this CD, you might be disappointed. However, I love all of Diana's previous music, and I thought this CD was her best yet. It's more jazzy than her previous "mainstream" type music. Most of the songs are slower, soulful and smooth, unlike some of her more upbeat songs in the past, but she does it well. Also, she wrote several of the tracks on this CD, including The Girl in the Other Room (title song) and Almost Blue, which are very "jazzy" and great songs. Departure Bay and Narrow Daylight are just beautiful songs, too. I love every single song on this CD, and I've listened to it almost exclusively since I got it. Do yourself a favor and give it try!
