Free Music Notes for The Look Of LoveFree Music Review: Impeccable Music-Created by true talent Hit: 5 Stars
Well I've read a lot of the reviews before writing this and I must say this is one great friggin CD ! :)Yes- she plays less piano than her other efforts, Yes the Strings are arranged in a way that gives them prominence, Yes the tempos are all in a similar range........but...... this is music of the sublime - It's like Tantric Sex! the string arrangements by Claus Ogerman are worth the cost of the disc, add Diana's controlled phrasing and vocal style and you have a possible masterwork by a still developing artist. Impeccable music by impeccable musicians....and arranger. I truly disagree with those who say Diana has left her roots behind. I also disagree with those who say her label (now Verve) forced her into this (read her interviews). I adamantly disagree with those who say this is an effort to bend to commercial interests! (who in their right mind would create a CD with ballads and strings in the year 2001 and expect it to sell - after all this is the Brittany and N'Sync era is it not?? ) I think Diana is simply showing us another side of her "roots" with the help of many amazingly talented musicians. I look forward already to her next recording and hope there's some more controversial music to listen to:) put this on the best stereo you can find - you will NOT be disappointed...
Free Music Review: A Perfectly Beautiful and Romantic CD Hit: 5 Stars
I think it may be a bit of a shame this album is in the "jazz" catagory, for although Diana Krall may be a "jazz artist", on this miraculous CD she simply a singer of standards.... she has style, but (thank God), she sings these songs without destroying or molesting the lyric or melody that so many artists are prone to do today. THE SONGS are the stars on this album, not the "stylings" of a "diva"... how refreshing that is! These songs are not for those with limited attention spans who must have a driving beat and an occasional yelp or cry from the vocalist... these songs are for those who know how to listen and hear truly great orchestrations from veterans like Claus Ogerman (who orchestrated the most mellow of all Frank Sinatra's albums "Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim" in the 1960s).. and this album is a tribute to that very sound. This album is lush, romantic, beautifully crafted and sensuous.. it is for a night of romance and for decompression from the traffic and noise of everyday life. I hope Ms. Krall will give us more albums like this masterpiece. TOP musicians, superbly crafted arrangements and a clear and clean vocalist who respects lyric, melody and emotion make this clearly a 5 star masterwork in every respect.
Free Music Review: A step above her "when I look into your eyes" Hit: 5 Stars
This is an excellent CD. I'm somewhat surprised there are no reviews so far. Diane Krall has always been my favorite female Jazz vocalist. She has a mature and soothing voice which one can listens to over and over again and don't get tired of it. However, over the years, other Jazz female vocalists have emerged and I got drawn to some of them along the way. Then Diana came out with this CD and wow... let me just say that if you love "when I look into your eyes", you will love this one even more. First, the recordings in this CD are exceptionally done: the background orchestration works came out crisp and clear. Diana's voice is placed slightly in front with authority and appears dead in the centre. The opening track S'Wonderful put you right in the moods of Diana's world and the tracks get better and better all the way through to the last one. This CD displayed similar characteristics as her early ones, most noticeably the Bossa Nova tracks. The differences are found in the background orchestration works which give the music a touch of class over her prior works. My favorites are: S'Wonderful, I remember you, Besame mucho, Dancing in the dark, and The look of love. All the tracks are excellent, but the one I mentioned seem to stand out.
Free Music Review: I'm laughing...! Hit: 5 Stars
My, but it's been amusing to read the reviews that rip apart Miss Krall. Lighten-up! If not, tuck your warped and scratched vinyls of Billie Holiday and Diane Schuur under your arm and please leave the rest of us alone. To the rest of you: BUY THIS CD. What's wrong with full orchestrations this time around? Or sensual liner photos of someone this gorgeous? Or does Miss Krall's genuine beauty somehow make her talent less legitimate? Know this: her CD-bin at the record store is almost always empty and her live performances are always sold-out. If it's your first time with Miss Krall...you'll only love her previous offerings all the more. I'm glad this CD has motivated you to pull back the curtain to discover this artist. Again: Welcome! Meanwhile, some of my compadres in this list of reviews give the jazz/blues genre a bad name... I'm disappointed by those compelled to use this forum to commiserate in an elitist fashion as to who among them is the "truest" jazz aficionado. Don't be so silly. Shed thy "snooty-ness." All that matters is musical stylings, soothing vocal interpretations and a sound that just,...well,...makes one feel....wonderful. The blessing of great music. And this disc does just that. It's lovely.
Free Music Review: A Subtle Masterpiece Hit: 5 Stars
When you first listen to Diana Krall's new album you may be disappointed. She does not swing hard like on "Hit That Jive, Jack" and "East of The Sun" or offer cute, novelty songs like "Popsicle Toes" and "Peel Me A Grape." On The Look of Love Diana Krall gives her most subtle and lush offering yet. With unobtrusive strings playing on all tracks and a quartet used very sparsely yet effectively Diana Krall does just what the album's title says, she looks at love. She explores the thrill of falling in love (The Look of Love), the thrill of being in love (S'Wonderful), the heartbreak of losing love (I Get Along Without You Very Well), the vengeance of losing love (Cry Me A River), and everything in between. Diana Krall does all of this while still using the Great American Songbook as her guide. One thing Diana Krall does maintain in this album, as with previous releases, is her ability to breathe new life into well-worn standards making them as applicable today as they were 50 years ago. The Look of Love is a brilliantly mellow gem that after careful inspection keeps the listener coming back for more and ensures Diana Krall's place as one of the best jazz interpreters we have.
