Free Music Review: Classy, Smooth, Jazzy

This is the very first album that I truly appreciated Diana Krall's vocal artistry. I have listened to her earlier recordings prior to this and I must say that this is *the* best from my Diana Krall collection. My number two choice is The Look of Love.
This Grammy-winning CD, "When I Look In Your Eyes," won the "Best Jazz Vocal Performance" and was also nominated for "Album of the Year." My congratulations to Diana Krall and everyone involved in this wonderful recording for a well-deserved recognition.
With her sultry voice, commanding piano skills, and Grammy awards to add to her impressive musical qualities, Diana Krall is worthy to be considered as one of the modern day divas in the jazz scene today. This is a showcase of her most outstanding performances marked by elegance and a great sense of singing style so distinctively her own. What makes her an extraordinary performer is her ability to sing and play at the same time, and excel in both. What a great talent!
The beauty of this album is also credited to the producers, Tommy LiPuma, David Foster and Johnny Mandel, who is also the album's brilliant and remarkable arranger/orchestrator, Eddie Karam, Al Schmitt and all the equally talented jazz musicians: Russell Malone (guitar), John Clayton (bass), Jeff Hamilton (drums), Ben Wolfe (bass), Larry Bunker (vibes), Lewis Nash (drums), Pete Christlieb (sax), Alan Broadbent (piano - track #13), Chuck Berghoffer (bass).
This CD contains a repertoire of unforgettable classic standards from the Great American Songbook composed and penned by the most brilliant songwriters of all-time: George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Dorothy Fields, Harry Warren, Al Dublin, Jimmy McHugh, Ted Koehler and Harold Arlen, among others. And not to mention original songs written by Michael Franks and a budding songwriter, Clint Eastwood, "Popsicle Toes" and "Why Should I Care?" respectively.
My top favorite is "Let's Face The Music And Dance" which she delivers enchantingly with a charming Bossa Nova arrangement. It is overwhelmingly impressive! It's absolutely the best rendition I have ever heard for this Irving Berlin gem of a song.
Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin," one of the widely-performed songs, is given the most mellow and softly sweet reading, thus, making it the album's emotional highlight. "I'll String Along With You" co-written by Harry Warren and Al Dubin, is such a notable song and one of my favorites from this bunch.

With a collection of flawlessly interpreted songs, it's so hard to single out a favorite song for they are all my favorites, but the most stunning tracks include "East Of The Sun (West Of The Moon)," "Let's Fall In Love," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "Pick Yourself Up" and of course "Popsicle Toes." (How can I forget this song when I was a huge fan of Michael Franks in the '80s? I have collected some of his remarkable albums since The Art of Tea).
This CD is a treasure and the more you listen to it, the more enjoyable your listening experience will be.

Japanese edition of the accomplished Canadian jazz pianist/ vocalist's 1999 outing with 'P.S. I Love You' added as a bonus track, for a total of 14 selections.Years after the '90s, the decade will be remembered for the rise of pianist-vocalist Diana Krall. Simply put, this British Columbian-born artist is one of the most engaging musicians to emerge from the heap of scat-happy singers high on pyrotechnics, but short on poetry. Stamped with the imprimatur of the Nat King Cole trio and blessed by her apprenticeship with the late West Coast piano giant Jimmy Rowles, Krall simply sings songs the way they're supposed to be sung: with devotion to the lyric and with attention to the groove. This CD finds Krall in familiar company with compatriots Russell Malone (on guitar), bassist John Clayton, drummers Lewis Nash and Jeff Hamilton, and vibraphonist (and former Bill Evans associate) Larry Bunker--all supported by Johnny Mandel's svelte string arrangements. Krall and crew take Irving Berlin's chestnut "Let's Face the Music and Dance" and the Sinatra-signatured "I've Got You Under My Skin" south to Brazil via a sexy bossa nova. Malone's lush guitar accompaniment complements Krall's heartfelt delivery on "When I Look in Your Eyes," and Michael Franks's "Popsicle Toes" dances courtesy of Hamilton's drum work. "Devil May Care," "East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)," The Best Thing for You," and the stridish "I Can't Give You Anything but Love" groove with a minimum of waste, while Mandel's simpatico strings steal the show on "I'll String Along with You," "Pick Yourself Up," and "Do It Again."
