Free Music Review: Could have been so much fresher...

There's no doubt about the microphone skills of Dice Raw, his freestyle rips on the mic on the Roots records are truly the stuff of Philly legend....I was thinking this disc was going to be more of the same, an instant classic. This is overproduced, full of sing along choruses and some real stupid skits...I've seen Dice on stage with the Roots and KNOW that he can drop mad knowledge...but this rehearsed, slick record is more in the lines of a Jay Z or Tupac than the hard straight up B Boy style you expect from one of the 215 crew.
I can't recommend this at all. Maybe live, but "Reclaiming the Dead" is just another mainstream hip hop record....c'mon Dice, I know you can rock it much better!
Instead, heads should grab Aceyalone's new "Accepted Eclectic" for a truely dope slice of hip hopera....

Astute heads will remember Dice Raw as the pugnacious wunderkind MC who debuted wrecking the mic on The Roots' beatbox-propelled "The Lesson Part 1," from 1994's Do You Want More?!!!??!. After appearing on all of the Illadelph crew's subsequent releases, Reclaiming the Dead is the manifestation of Dice Raw's purist ethos. An attempt to "bring it back to old-school rap," as the single "Thin Line (Between Raw & Jiggy)" forcefully expresses, Reclaiming the Dead proves an uneven ride. The beats, which oscillate between often tiresome roughneck territory ("Go Dice Raw") and the markedly better melodic dabblings of longtime Roots collaborator Scott Storch ("Forget What They Say") unfortunately fail to rouse significant innovation in Dice Raw's delivery. While his energy on the mic is unquestionable and occasionally triumphs ("Lockdown"), Dice Raw's technique, to his detriment, rarely changes up. While Raw gains kudos for his desire to show reverence for microphone fiends of the past, his own chops, on this showing, barely escape the mediocrity he so obviously abhors. --Del F.
