Free Music Review: a solid collection of classic oldies

Dick Bartley Presents: Classic Oldies 1965-1969 has quite a number of hits that took the airwaves by storm back in the day! There is a good variety of songs on this disc; and that makes it a good value. The quality of the sound is excellent and I like that artwork even if it is standard for this "Dick Bartley" CD series.
The Righteous Brothers open things up with a longer than usual version of "(You're My) Soul And Inspiration." "(You're My) Soul And Inspiration" has a very lush musical arrangement and this impresses me. The music complements the vocals of these brothers and "(You're My) Soul And Inspiration" makes an auspicious start for the album. Similarly, The Walker Brothers do an outstanding job as they perform their big, big hit entitled "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore)." This tune has a great melody and The Walker Brothers do this one up right! The music could have been toned down a little but this is a minor issue. The New Colony Six also does great on "I Will Always Think About You;" what a sweet ode to love!
The American Breed scores a big hit in my book with their awesome "Bend Me, Shape Me." "Bend Me, Shape Me" use some pretty creative handclapping percussion and overall this is quite strong. I also love Shirley Ellis' excellent tune, "The Clapping Song (Clap Pat Clap Slap)."
There's a rare track of Desmond Dekker & The Aces doing "Israelites;" and listen for "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight" by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. Tommy and Bobby do this without letting go of a superfluous note. There's also another gem in "You've Got Your Troubles" by The Fortunes; this is one of my very favorite tunes from the 1960s and The Fortunes could never truly be forgotten. The New Colony Six returns to do another hit of their, "Things I'd Like To Say." "Things I'd Like To Say" has an excellent arrangement and they perform this like the champs they always were and still remain.
The Silkie do a great cover of "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away;" this impresses me greatly and it's another major highlight of this album. Hooray for The Silkie! In addition, I really like "Love Is All Around" by The Troggs which makes its stereo debut here on this CD. The Troggs sure knew how to put out a tune and make it very memorable! Procol Harum does their classic `60s hit, "A Whiter Shade Of Pale;" and they never skip a beat. The CD even ends strong with "Fire" by The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown.
Overall, Dick Bartley Presents: Classic Oldies 1965-1969 is one of the better single CD compilations available for people to add to their music collections. The diehard fan may well want a box set of tunes like these; but this is solid on its own nonetheless.

Classic Oldies 1965-1969 collects the wildest, best music possible, mirroring the great Top 40 stations of the late 60's.
Classic Oldies 1965-1969 has been digitally mastered in true stereo wherever possible. Many songs, such as the I'des Of March's "You Wouldn't Listen" (released years before their best-known hit, "Vehicle") are sought-after rarities, and one track, "Peter Rabbit" by Dee Jay & The Runaways, makes it's CD debut. Two other tracks, Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade Of Pale" and the Troggs' "Love Is all Around" although widely released, have never been available in STEREO in the original versions - until now!
