Free Music Review: The greatest band you dont know about

In 1975, New York was in a strange state, as punk was just barely starting, the Dolls has failed, and years later after the novelty solo career of Johanson, the death of Thunders, and slip into excess disappearences of the others, they finally were hailed as kings of a genre that is these days so overblown and coporated - punk. But at the time another band emerged that basically filled the gap between them and the Ramones who were just about to burst the gates open, the Dictators. So ahead of their time with their brand of rock and roll/macho teen rebellion humor. Though Shernoff and co. were never really full on punk or heavy metal, they toyed with both genres, too funny and too into 60's teen culture to be metal, and too many guitar solos to be punk, these guys are really in a class of their own. With BOC's infamous production team Krugman/Pearlman, they unleashed the debut in 1975. Of course it went so below the radar that nowadays true rock veterans like Springsteen are pretty much the only ones aware of their existance. As far as the music goes, the epic opener Next Big Thing blows everything away, massive riffs, big sound, and lots of arrogance (b/w humor). Their cover of I Got You Babe, shows their affection for 60's pop nostalgia, and the band makes it a great rock song. Tracks like Back To Africa and Master Race Rock face some touchy subjects that no mainstream album would have. As the Ramones would do a few years later, their cover of the classic California Sun is also highly entertaining, but along with the openers (Big Thing, and Babe) the real classics come in with Teengenerate, with trades some heavy and melodic guitar and piano attacks that really bludgeons. Two Tub Man, "secret weapon" Handsome Dick Manitoba's trademark song another Tater's classic is a must hear as well, brimming with some his most hilarious banter. Weekend, another total gem, a nice slice of high school punk storytelling and (I Live For) Cars And Girls rounds out a truely remarkable album that still remains a cornerstone to rock and roll, true rock and roll, dirty, in your face, not afraid to parody cliches and not bowing to major label pressure. For fans of 'forgotten' true to heart rock and roll bands, these guys aren't just a in their own time sound, they are transcendent, something that really doesnt exist in rock anymore. Go Girl Crazy Poster
York's finest trying to bring both sides together in a brave, prescient, and (at least at the time) futile gesture. The band's "smart guys who like dumb stuff" humor, junk-culture reference points, and '60s cheeze rock covers ("California Sun" and "I Got You Babe" on one album) would seem tailor made for the crowd at CBGB digging the Ramones and the Dead Boys, but their sludgy and stripped down hard rock (and Ross "The Boss" Funichello's neo-metal guitar solos) were something else altogether. And at a time when the arena rock audience had not yet embraced the less-than-subtle humor and theatrics of Sparks or Cheap Trick, the Dictators' ahead-of-their-time enthusiasm for wrestling, White Castle hamburgers, and television confused more kids than it converted. Heard today, the album is a hoot and a half; if the tempos could often stand to be a bit livelier, Adny Shernoff's songs are still great (especially the absurdly anthemic "Two Tub Man," "I Live for Cars and Girls," and "Weekend"), the jokes still register (while the contemporary Political Correctness brigade might blanch at "Back to Africa" or "Master Race Rock," they're merely absurd in the Mad Magazine tradition), and "secret weapon" Handsome Dick Manitoba was truly a find.
