Free Music Notes for Life for RentFree Music Review: Wonderful album!! Hit: 5 Stars
Yes, this is a real masterpiece! That's probably why stayed a few weeks on top of English charts. Dido is successful again in creating wonderful ballads and catchy songs. If you thought she would never be able to do something like "No Angel", her debut album, you were wrong. This is even better!1 - White Flag (10/10) : This song is one of the best of the new century, and a real amazing track. It opens the album very well. I like WF a lot because I must have listened to it about 300 hundred times and still didn't get sick of it!! 2 - Stoned (10/10) : I love this track, even though the fact it takes about a minute for Dido start to sing. Her voice is wonderful and the rhythm is perfect! 3 - Life For Rent (9/10) : I like this song a lot, Dido shows her talent for writing lyrics here. The rhythm is "happier" here, not as dark as in "Stoned". A great song indeed. 4 - Mary's In India (7/10) : I had to listen to it a lot of times for me starting to like it actually. It's a calm acoustic song. What I like most about it are the lyrics. 5 - See You When You're 40 (10/10) : Although it's very calm and a little depressive, this song is so powerful that I got addicted to it for a long time. Wonderful lyrics, wonderful voice, wonderful background. 6 - Don't Leave Home (11/10) : Yes, that's a masterpiece!! This song is the best track of the album, and one of Dido's best works ever. Everything works here... I'm happy it was released as 3rd single. 7 - Who Makes You Feel (7/10) : I think it's the track I like less, still it has a great chorus. Dido's voice sounds wonderful here too. 8 - Sand In My Shoes (9/10) : I like this song a lot, although it's very similar to others. 9 - Do You Have A Little Time (9/10) : Wonderful track!! Works very good with the rest of the album :) 10 - This Land Is Mine (9/10) : I like this a lot too, it get's better once you here it a few times!! 11 - See The Sun (10/10) : Well, this is a great song! Closes the album very well. Makes me wanna listen to it all over again...
Free Music Review: You can't argue with quality Hit: 5 Stars
When I bought this CD, I liked it straightaway and that got me worried: usually the music that I like fast, I also get tired of, fast. But it wasn't the case with this CD.. it actually grew on me still and now I adore it.
Dido's voice is one of those rare ones that are both unique and technically brilliant. She sounds the same in every song - yet different. The emotions in each song are different - and she creates a different soundscape - soulscape - for each, that is utterly breathtaking, capable of lifting you eighty feet above the dullness of the city streets.
There is no weak song on this album, but the ones that really shine are:
1. "White Flag" - beautiful opening, simple but effective lyrics about keeping a person in one's heart after separation
4. "Mary's in India" - Beautiful tapping sound in the background gives the song a lovely, exotic rhythm. Dido produces some of her most tender vocals ever and elevates everyday, mundane details to some higher plane.
6. "Don't Leave Home" - in terms of vocal technique, probably the most brilliant track on the album. What a stirring chorus! "and if you're cold, i'll keep you warm/If you're low, just hold on/cos I will be your safety/oh don't leave home". I love the way her voice forks up at the end of the word "low".
8. "Sand in My Shoes" - very unique and gorgeous opening. If you play it on a pair of good speakers (especially wood) and stand in between them, you will be amazed at the mesmerizing effect as the sounds bounce between the speakers and the instruments change. My favourite words are "to a place where I can watch the sun set and/take my time, take all our time". Again, Dido shows the ability to take a very mundane state of things and give a very meditative interpretation vocally.
10. "This Land is Mine" - woah! Words can't describe this one. Just give it a listen!! Classic Dido.
11. "See the Sun" - a very relaxed, classy vocal delivery in this song about pain and hope.
Free Music Review: Own! Don't Rent!! Hit: 5 Stars
Dido's 1999 debut album, "No Angel", was one of the most unique introductions for an artist with the most angelic voice and hit-ballad potential. While some artists struggle with sophomore efforts, especially those that are the hyped-up descendents of super-genious, hit packed predecessors, "Life for Rent" is both seductive and irresistable as a follow up to the tremendously popular and successful "No Angel". With a dazzling catalogue of eleven enthralling tracks, almost every song could easily qualify for a single-release status - effortlessly trumping any previously occupied chart position, involving not too distant hits of the likes of "Here With Me", "Thank You", or "Hunter". Most worthy of praise, (aside from the radio-friendly super ballad "White Flag"), are the blissfully enchanting "Stoned", "Who Makes You Feel", "Sand in my Shoes" and "Do You Have a Little Time". Stirring and moving moments on the album belong to "Life for Rent", a very reflective and uplifting track, as well as "Don't Leave Home", another gem that begs of attention. More weaker and distracting moments on "Life for Rent", though very few and in my opinion - surpassable - include "Mary's in India" (though I must admit I like the twist at the end of this song's narrative..) and "This Land is Mine". While occasionally, after three or four listens, the album might seem overwhelmingly balladic, Dido's immense talent as both singer and song writer ultimately inflate "Life for Rent" with great confidence and musical credibility. This was by no doubt one of the best albums of 2003, and without a shadow of a doubt - one of the very BEST sophomore albums to come from a very respected and treasured still-fresh artist. Indeed "Life for Rent" trumps its predecessor....with such an achievement one can only wonder what may come next....

Free Music Review: "If You're Cold I'll Keep You Warm" Hit: 5 Stars
Dido's "Life For Rent" brings us exquisitely into the realm of superior chill-out pop music. She has proven once again that she is an artist to be respected, and if any evidence were needed, this album amply provides it.Every song on "Life For Rent" is good. It is an album which works best listened to all the way through, but listening to just a song or two at random still manages to serve as a powerful aural experience. The lyrics are poignant, the hooks are astounding, and the orchestrations are lush, soothing and beautiful. Dido has co-written every track on the album, and it shows what a great lyricist she is, as well as being a pleasant singer. The lead single is the first track, "White Flag", and it builds into a crescendo of heartrending words and sounds. The emotions are beautifully evident. Another great track for this same experience is "Stoned", which is lush and gorgeous. And "Don't Leave Home" has to count as one of the best songs of 2003. Its meaning is so deep and powerful, and the way it works itself up and then breaks into the chorus is absolutely astounding and is sure to give chills to its listeners. Dido also caters to her funky side a little, with tracks such as "Who Makes You Feel", with its slightly funky beat and drop vocals. The chill-out genre of music can often times convey an emotional 'sense', but still lack that certain 'something' required to push a song into greatness. Pop music, conversely, often tries to convey emotion to the Nth degree, but quite often hits the wrong notes and falls flat. With "Life For Rent", Dido proves to us that the chill-out/pop hybrid is a wonderful thing, and can accomplish alluring music with deep, meaningful lyrics for the emotional satisfaction that we often seek, but so rarely find.
Free Music Review: Excellent follow-up to No Angel Hit: 5 Stars
If you liked No Angel, then Life For Rent is a must have. While she hasn't changed a bit and remains a sweet and charming lady, Dido's music has been taken to a new level all together. From the dancy 'Sand in my shoes' to the sweet and slow 'Mary's in India' to the hitsingles 'White Flag' and 'Life For Rent', Dido's new album is filled with the most beautiful sounds, lyrics and the most impressive voice. Her lyrics sometimes tend to a dark side, slightly melancholic and depressed. Yet there is always a sweet touch, a bit of joy and a lot of love. Listening to 'See the sun' you feel the pain and misery, yet you are uplifted by the sweet chorus where she promises 'you'll see the sun again. And you're asking me why pains the only way to happiness, and I promise you you'll see the sun again'. Combine this with her incredible voice, touching you in your heart and your mind, and you have an album in which you can lose yourself completely while listening. If you've heard the cd once, you haven't heard it at all. Thanks to Dido's brother and producer Rollo Armstrong, the cd is filled with the most fantastic sounds and tunes. Everytime you listen to Life For Rent, you discover a new bell, a new whistle, a new set of strings. This is what makes the music complete. It is not the mindless beats of today's dj's. It's not the simple pop that takes up all the air time. Life For Rent is a modern day symphony, it is a musical festival in itself. Pop, dance, all the types of music you can imagine, are combined to form an album. A true pleasure to listen to, time and time again. If you are looking for a cd to fill the void in today's supply of pop and trance then Life For Rent is what you need. It guarantees hours of listening pleasure and it guarantees to blow you away completely.
