Free Music Review: Stepping Stones
Hit: 5 Stars

Music, much like other medium and experiences, tends to thread it's way through our lives like stepping stones. We often hear a song and our first reaction is one of emotional continuity. We remember it as an landing that anchors an entire chapter of our life.

Dido is both totally unique and totally familier all at once. Her voice is perhaps unlike any I've ever heard. Nothing lofty and nothing that'll put any power siren out of business. But special in it's flavor of of whispy sultry comfort. When I say whispy I'm referring to something of a hush. That kind of hush that makes one feel that everything will be okay.

The music shares a similar duality. Very simple on a light ear, yet if you listen closely it's obvious the work that's gone into each song. Simple is good because it speaks to everyone. The depth within allows anyone of those 'everyone' to listen as deeply as they like without dissapointment.

The mix is a masterpiece. It isn't noticed unless that's the intent. It can be said that if you can hear the mix, it's not been well done. Again we're graced with simplicity by virtue of mastery of a complex process. For those of us who've had a bit of mixing experience we know that this is how it should be done.

As to the meat of the matter, everyone is going to have their own subjective opinion. It's an acoustic synth hybrid that calms without being a sleeper. Beautiful melodies against simple yet well used harmony. Best of all, like the voice of Dido, there's an unspoken 'hush - everything will be okay' quality to the music.

I've been across a lot of harsh water in my time, and if ever there were a stepping stone; a place that will live in the best of me as a refuge and an anchor to better things, 'Life for Rent' remains indellibly one.

Best regards -Frank

Free Music Review: GREAT
Hit: 5 Stars

Let me just say this before I say anything else: I LOVE this Cd. It is very relaxing, I love Dido's voice and all the lyrics to all the songs. If you're looking for an incredibly fast, dance-type music Cd, this isn't it, but it's a great Cd.

1) White Flag- Overplayed on the radio, but it is still a great song. True for all of us people with broken hearts. (smile) Good song. 4.5/5

2) Stoned- It might take a little while to grow on you, but it's a great song. 5/5

3) Life For Rent- I don't kno why they don't play this song on the radio. Catchy tune. Kind of depresses me, but I listen to it all the time. 5/5

4) Mary's in India- An ok song. It's not super catchy or fast. But I like the lyrics and I always listen to it for the last line. (I like the way she says it...) 3/5

5) See You When You're 40- One of my definite faves on the whole Cd. LOVE this song. Never gets old. 10/5!

6) Don't Leave Home- There's something to it that I love. 5/5

7) Who Makes You Feel- GREAT. Another one of my faves. I LOVE it. 10/5!

8) Sand in my Shoes- A good song. A little faster and it sounds king of nostalgic. Good. 4/5

9) Do You Have A Little Time- Good song. Decent, but not great like the others. Worth listening to, though. 4/5

10) This Land is Mine- Okay. 4/5

11) See the Sun- Personally, I don't love this song. Okay, but not great. 3/5

12) The Closer You Get- A hidden track about 2 or 3 minutes after "See The Sun". This is a GREAT song. I LOVE it. It's just Dido and a guitar. Come on at 7:10 minutes exactly. 10/5

I'm sure, by now, you can see how much I love this Cd. I turn it on every night as I'm getting ready for bed. Relaxing. But you can turn it on while you're driving, etc. and still not fall asleep and sing along. WONDERFUL.

Free Music Review: Dido - Life For Rent
Hit: 5 Stars

The second album from Dido, "Life For Rent", has proven her to be one of the most talented singer/songwriters today. The album is quite different from her first success "No Angel", however it's just as brilliant. Dido's tone creates perfect rolling melodies and sweet harmonies, adding a mellow background different to that of "No Angel". Songs like "Stoned," and "Don't Leave Home" combine this sound with darker, more mature lyrics, creating a juxtaposing texture of soul bearing lyrics and glorious sweet sounds. "Who Makes You Feel" adds to this technique with a stand out sexiness brought out with backing vocals and a swelling passion that pulls the listener into Dido's new world of sound. This maturity carries throughout the album with songs like "Do You Have A Little Time" and "See You When You're 40", which shows us that Dido's music moves with her on her journey throughout life. The title track and second single, "Life For Rent" and "This Land Is Mine" are laden with folky stylings that continue to take us to a much more distant place than "No Angel". The flowing beauty of "See The Sun" layers folky tunes with a deep, synthesised glowing beat that creeps up to an overwhelming, spine tingling climax (did I mention sexy?) With songs such as "Mary's In India" and the hidden track "Closer", Dido shows us that by keeping the music simplistic and allowing her voice to shine through, the true beauty and sweetness within it can be released. Dido has displayed her outstanding talent of combining her incredible lyrics, and her exploration of brilliant new sounds and techniques in "Sand In My Shoes" as well as throughout the whole album and showcases it with her first single, "White Flag". "Life For Rent" is a truly extraordinary album.

Free Music Review: Dido-Life For Rent(Awesome CD)
Hit: 5 Stars

What can I say? Dido's newest CD "Life For Rent" is an absolute hit. It's different from her debut album "No Angel", but in a good way. Like myself you will want to listen to this CD every second of every day. Every single one of her songs are incredible, but the ones that take the cake are "Sand In My Shoes" and "See The Sun" "See The Sun" is my favourite song of hers, and if you wait about 3-4 minutes after its done you'll hear a ghost track called "Closer" "Closer" is an amazing love song and I know it'll be my wedding song! "Life For Rent" really showcases Dido's talents. She has amazing vocals and she's also really good at song writing. She is just drop dead gorgeous. She's my hero, role model, mentor, and idol. I have so much admiration and respect for this lovely and talented young woman. I swear that if you don't like Dido and you listen to this CD you'll become a fan. She is an all around talented person. I attended her concert and it was awesome. This CD is great for all your moods, whether it be anger, heartbreak, or love. It will be hard not to listen to any other CD besides "No Angel" The follow up to her first album is a complete sucess. There will never be another Dido Armstrong. She is the best and most talented singer in the history of music. I recommend this CD to anyone, Dido fan or not. You'll enjoy it anyday anytime. Now if you'll excuse me I must go put in "Life For Rent" in my CD player and listen to it. Dido, if you ever read this...I LOVE YOU! You're the best. Remember, don't forgot to buy this CD whenever you have the chance. If it cost $100.00 it be worth it. Good-bye everyone. YAY Dido!

Free Music Review: No Sophomore Slump for Dido
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been waiting 4 years for this album. It's been that long since No Angel was first released in the US. The wait was certainly worth the wait.

The first single White Flag took a bit to grow on me before I realized how beautiful it was. I loved the sound from the first listen, but it didn't seem to compare to the power of No Angel.

Much can be said of the album Life For Rent as a whole. I like every song on the CD, and enjoyed them from the beginning. But there was a sense that the album didn't have anything quite as powerful as Here With Me, Slide, or Take My Hand from No Angel.

That is, perhaps, because Life For Rent is a bit more subtle. The beauty of the songs is still there. Dido's voice never sounded better and her songwriting has matured. It is because of the latter that the songs take a bit more listening to until they bear their fruits. With the exception of the anthemic title track and Don't Leave Home (one of my favorites from her live tour for the last album) and White Flag, nothing really jumps out at you.

But nearly every track has a hook, and I was soon swept up in the mellow beauty of Stoned and This Land Is Mine.

This is a beautiful album. And even though No Angel will always occupy a special place in my heart, I do feel that Life For Rent is a superior album in nearly every way.

The only slight dissapointments come from the translations of some songs I was familiar with live onto the record. Do You Have A Little Time lost some of it's sweet innocence and See The Sun isn't the anthemic roof-raiser it was live. But it's unfair to judge an album against a live performance, and the strengths of the recorded versions of these songs soon show themselves.
