Many other reviewers have commented that this album debuts a more stripped down sound for Dido. Is this a bad thing? I think not. Dido no longer hides behind as many walls of sound as on her first album. Her voice becomes the central instrument, and this can only be a good thing. It highlights that she is a versatile singer, more confident and in control. She doesn't need all of those synthesizers droning on in the background. She has emerged as a truly capable artist, not just another overproduced pop phenom.Besides, I woudn't exactly qualify Dido's first album as the holy grail - it had its up and downs, and its stripped down songs as well. Although this album has fewer standout "single-worthy" tracks than "No Angel", I find it to be more consistently compelling, and written with more focus on poetry. Not that this is a heady album, Dido just expresses what she wants to say (generally speaking) in a more succint, colorful way than on her first album. Highlights are White Flag, a more "drenched in sound" style tune with a great hook; Don't Leave Home is a deceptively simple meditation on wants and needs; Sand In My Shoes has beautifully shimmering harmonies. Do You Have A LIttle Time ventures into some interesting fusion of strings and spanish guitars. This Land Is Mine has a great acoustic rock sound, and See The Sun is a true pop epic - it really rocks too. This album is an enjoyable listen all the way through. If you are a fan of honest pop/rock in a world of posturing you should pick up this CD.

Than do yourself a favor and listen to this! Dido's second album has personally been a long time coming for me. Her radio hit "Here With Me" didn't really catch on until a year after 'No Angel' was released. The show Rosewell pretty much launched her career but I've been a fan since her debut was first released close to 3 years ago so it's a breath of fresh air to hear the new material found on 'Life For Rent'. This CD took a while to grow on me but I'm hardly disappointed. At this present moment I can't really say I like this more than her previous work but I find myself enjoying this on a deeper level every chance I get to press play and have a feeling I eventually will. This sounds less commercial and more original. She seems to have found her niche and all has been improved. The inclusion of orchestral strings adds a nice touch to songs like "White Flag" and "See The Sun" and I love her exploration for electronica on "Stoned". You can also hear traces of Faithless on tracks like "Who Makes You Feel" and "Sand In My Shoes", which should come as no surprise since a couple members from that group contribute to this album, including her brother, Rollo Armstrong. "Do You Have a Little Time", "This Land Is Mine" and "Don't Leave Home" are my very favorites though. Her gorgeous voice is always clear in pronunciation and she never strains herself. Instead she sings naturally and lets the emotions flow out of her. Screaming at the top of your lungs is not the key element to being a good, talented artist and Dido is the perfect example of that.

Free Music Review: A Fine Sophmore Effort Hit: 5 Stars
"Life For Rent" is Dido's follow-up album of "No Angel". She combines pop, synthesizer, and celtic to create a highly unique sound that pleases audiences. Such musical quality raises her level from her previous efforts. Her lyrics are written and performed beautifully regardless if she's singing about love, loneliness, or intimacy. Her voice offers a shy, yet deep glimpse into her words and personal life. Whether she's singing with an upbeat or a ballad tempo, she remains flawless. She offers a wonderful variety of musical flavors throughout the album. Her Grammy-nominated hit single "White Flag" is a great way to begin this musical journey, which expresses her pop background. This introduces what's to come throughout the remainder. Her signature musical combination sometimes adds other musical elements, making her tracks more interesting. "Stoned" stands out the most in such experimentation, adding eerie and techno elements. Her ballads offer an orchestrated theme, making her words deeper and more meaningful. With most of mainstream music sounding the same, it's great that Dido continues doing her own thing. Radio needs more like her. "Life For Rent" is a great album for those looking for unique music. This will become an unforgettable experience for many and in some cases, addictive. Dido is expected to receive some 2004 Grammy nominations, including Best Pop Album and possibly Album of the Year, which are highly deserved.
Free Music Review: Among the best pop albums of 2003 Hit: 5 Stars
At times, Dido is compared with other artists such as Annie Lennox (whose latest production is also brilliant, by the way), Natalie Merchant and even Tori Amos. The sole comparison should be a source of pride for her, given the musical stature of all of these names, but the truth is that slowly, with only two albums out, she's carving her place in today's musical scene as one of the most talented & balanced acts out there.Three years after her successful debut album, "No Angel", Dido Armstrong comes back stronger sharing again producing and writing duties with her brother Rollo (from Faithless). The product of their collaboration is a more solid album than the previous one. Doing a song per song account of the album would be a waste of your time, mainly because it all stands out as a cohesive piece of work, with great lyrics that sit close to your heart of mine (I mean, you have to be able to relate on an emotional or intellectual level to the lyrics of at least some of the songs), and though some people contend that most songs sound "the same", I'd argue that the musical production also shows an evolution beyond her first album, with songs like "Stoned", "Mary's in India", "See you when you're 40" and "Don't leave home" as a testimony of this. All in all, Dido came back to stay and it sure comes in at a great time when there's a need for more talented artists like her in the pop scene.
