Free Music Review: Not immediately powerful but stunning with time
Hit: 5 Stars

Of course one would compare this album to No Angel given that it is a sophomore release. Even so, it is best to try to separate yourself from the previous album and not make a naturally possible comparison. I think this album is amazingly well put together in such a way that it has a 'delayed' effect on the listener. Most of the songs exist 'within a moment'. In white flag, it is a happenstance meeting on a street, don't leave home exists within a blowup with your lover, sand in my shoes is in an apartment when you just get home. Every song is a little chapter or story and the disc tells a message of love lost, wisdom gained and moving on into some great unknown. There is such emotional impact on this disc that really can only come from someone in their late 20's or early 30's when life is taking off in many different directions, only amplified by the touching and natural ambience of Dido's voice. I can't get off the silent echos of See You When You're Forty and the "wouldn't have picked you out" windy ending that literally puts you in a trance and carries you away in a complete moment.

This disc is a sleeper like No Angel and is best sampled over time because the impact of the themes and various complexities are what make it great. Otherwise, you might just pass this disc over and say it is boring. Don't compare it and give it time. It really is a touching piece of work...

Free Music Review: I'm speechless...
Hit: 5 Stars

1. White Flag (5/5) The first single. It also earned her her first grammy nomination. This is a song where the true quality of her voice shines through.
2. Stoned (4/5) This song has a full minute of music before she starts to sing. Also the second single. The Deep Dish Remix of this song topped the billboard dance charts.
3. Life For Rent (5/5) Great song. Her voice is at it's most angelic here.
4. Mary's In India (3/5) This song is a little too underproduced for me. The lyrics are very sweet, but it dosen't really have a beat or rhythm.
5. See You When Your 40. (6/5) WOW! This track is amazing. This song has the best lyrics on all of the album, and the music is at it's best.
6. Don't Leave Home (5/5) The third single, with a killer video. A song about wanting to stay someone forever.
7. Who Makes You Feel. (4/5) The first time I heard this song, I hated it,but now it has grown on me. Amazing lyrics.
8. Sand In My Shoes (10,000/5) This should DEFINTLEY be the fourth single. I can't get the chourus out of my head.
9. Do You Have A Little Time (3/5) This song seems to be a favorite of many people, but I find it kinda boring.
10. This Land Is Mine.(5/5) Beautiful.
11. See The Sun. (4/5) See #10
Hidden Track:
12. Closer (4/5) Senstive, sweet, Jewel-like song.
This album is amazing, and I look forward to seeing Dido(...)

Free Music Review: There's Faith in Dido, and always will be.
Hit: 5 Stars

As with most critics, I don't agree with any of the negative reviews regarding LIFE FOR RENT, Dido's second outing. Maybe it's because I've been following Dido's career since her participation on REVERENCE, the debut CD from Faithless (one of brother Rollo's many projects). Or better yet, maybe it's because we haven't had a musical artist that writes, performs and produces the way only Dido can. She has appeared on each Faithless CD and is still "chilling with the family", with brother Rollo providing support in her ever-growing solo career.

Strongly present are the acoustic guitars, soft hip-hop beats, well layered harmonies, plush keyboard and piano backgrounds (some of which are provided by Sister Bliss) and lyrics of relationships and life.

Each song is strong in its own way. With many Radio-friendly tracks, interest in LIFE FOR RENT should continue well through 2004. Standout tracks worthy of airplay or commercial release include : "Don't Leave Home" (possibly this CD's "Here With Me"), "White Flag," the title track, "See The Sun," and "Stoned" (which has been recently remixed for Club Play by Deep Dish and Spiritchaser). The CD also has the bonus hidden track, "Closer."

Dido delivers yet another exceptional release, which could easily have been titled "Greatest Hits II."

Free Music Review: amazing! better than "No Angel"! she's an amazing artist
Hit: 5 Stars

with the expectations I had, i was quite sure i'm going to be so dissapointed. i'm so happy all my expectations were filled.
although some others suggested this album is like the b-sides of no angel, i really don't agree. as to the melodies, which do continue the line of the previous album, it's just the style of dido - and i'm glad for that. but the lyrics are much better, the sound is different and better - more guitars, an amazing production in genneral and particularly on "who makes you feel" & "do you have a little time", and no "skip 'em" tracks.
dido's voice is great, it goes so perfectly with the songs. the voice just sweeps you in.
great melodies - "white flag", "life for rent", "don't leave home", "it's my land" - this are my favourites.
"sand in my shoes" is a great song - starts with a guitar and a quike singing, and continues as a catchy dance.
dido written all the songs with other artists, and she has written the wonderful "see the sun" all by herself. this album puts her as one of the greatest artists today.
i have one reservation though - "no angel" had the wonderfull "dear isoble" (the best song on it, in my opinion) and i don't find a great ballad in that level in "life for rent".

Free Music Review: Dido's Sound Is Fantastic
Hit: 5 Stars

Dido's followup "Life For Rent" was long overdue. I've been a fan of hers since "No Angel"--her debut CD--which was released in 1999. I listened to that album almost every day, never tiring of it like I do with most other artists. I had high expectations for "Life For Rent", and did this album come through! "No Angel" in my opinion, is slightly better. "Here With Me" and "Honestly OK" will always be two of my favoriote tracks for the rest of my life. I think these two songs have the ability to inspire people throughout the years, and really stand against the test of time--much like the Beatles have. But "Life For Rent" is just as haunting, and even BETTER in some aspects than "No Angel" was. For one thing, Dido has greatly matured--her sound is more polished, and her beats more powerful. Her lyrics are breathtaking, and with each tune -- a vignette. "See You When You're 40" is beautiful but bitter. "See the Sun" is sad but hopeful, and "Mary's in India" surprises you with its theme of infidelity because of its sweet score. Each song tells a story one worth listenting to. This album is fantastic; all biases aside, Dido's still got it. And like I said before, its even better in some ways. Congrats!
